    Cobh Cathedral
    Michael L.

The Cobh Cathedral overlooks the city of Cobh and Cobh harbor. We were in Cobh for a half day or so and it is such a focal point when in the town that it just beckons for a visit. We climbed up the steep hill and settled out of breath at the entrance to the cathedral and saw spectacular views of the entire city and harbor. The cathedral was designed in the French gothic architecture style and the sculptures, stained glass and gargoyles on the building were a nice touch. The cathedral is worth a visit, despite the climb, and the views from the cathedral are definitely a highlight of such a beautiful town.

ST COLEMAN'S CATHEDRAL St Colman's Cathedral, quite an impressive French style building, dominates the town and indeed much of the nearby harbour area. It is in a very prominent location, the centrepiece of many photographs, both from the promenade and the water, and well worth a visit. The architects were Puglin and Ashlin. Started in 1868, it took close on fifty years to build. The largest of the Carillon of 47 bells weighs 3.5 tons. The Cathedral is in regular use. If you visit a Cobh pub, and there are many in the shadow of St Colman's, you could well hear the song called "The Holy Ground". There is more than one explanation of this title but it has got nothing to do with the cathedral as it is generally understood to refer to the old time red light district of this sea-faring town.

This towering 20th century Cathedral completely dominates the prettily terraced town of Cobh. If you're into (neo)gothic architecture, they don't come much better than this outside of France. Inside things are a little more shabby. Too many hand-written signs tacked to the walls for my liking, and those horrible little red lights instead of candles. Otherwise, a 4* experience.

A huge and highly ornamented French Gothic style cathedral which looks almost out of place on the hill above the village! There are many beautiful carvings, mosaics and stained glass windows well worth seeing inside. The most famous thing about this cathedral is its 49 bell carillon (the largest in Ireland) which covers four octaves. This includes a gigantic bell actually called St. Colman which is nearly 4 tons in weight! The cathedral isn't far from the sea front but the hill is steep leading up to it. We sheltered from very heavy rain inside the cathedral for longer than we'd intended to be there, but it gave a good opportunity to look around.

A majestic Cathedral without the tourists. One of the surprise attractions of Cobh. Worth the time and reverence.

SHANDON CHURCH St Anne's Church, high on a northside hill,…read moreis one of the most familiar landmarks in Cork City, visited by many tourists but generally ignored as a visit by the locals. I walked up there recently and enjoyed my stroll. The historic church has eight bells 8 which weigh 6 tons and first rang out over the city in 1752. The patients in the nearby (now closed) North Infirmary would often have been disturbed from their slumber by the bells' vibrations (lessened in modern times by improvements in placement). But it is the clocks on the sides of the church tower that have most engaged Corkonians over the years who jokingly called them the Four Liars as it was reckoned that the four clocks never agreed on the time! Not that I've heard that joke recently! The "Goldie Fish" mounted high on the church has entered the local literature and indeed Shandon comes up regularly in the songs and poems of the city. Fr Prout's nostalgic lines below are probably the most famous "With deep affection and recollection, I oft times think of those Shandon Bells" Nowadays, after your visit to the church, where you can get to ring the bells and enjoy the view over the city, you may take a rest on the seats in the adjoining St Anne's Park before walking back down to the city centre.

Living right under the bell tower for one year and half and having to endure the other false notes is a completely other story. The entrance is expensive and the climbing quite dangerous. The view is cool.
