OMG! I loved the exterior architecture of this church! It's a lovely looking church and in a whimsical moment, and taking a page out of modern pop culture, imagined it to be the 'cool' kid at school of all the churches in Cork. Fin Barr church is a beautifully neo-gothic Victorian building, like a wedding cake fairy tale castle! It's situated a little bit away from the main downtown location of Cork, but I'm super glad we made the trek to check it out. I was so drunk on the beautiful external architecture, didn't feel the need to pay €5 to visit the inside and my delight there was a labyrinth!! Another cool thing was trying to figure out the differences between the "wise virgins" and the "foolish virgins" depicted in the entrance sculptures. BTW I'm not making those descriptions up - that's exactly how the statues are described in the church info board! All I can say is go and wander thru here- it is AWESOME and will put a smile on your face! Note: #267 of Yelp 100 challenge for 2016

This is a absolutely amazing cathedral and a must see in Cork Ireland. Services have been held here for over a thousand years. It's incredibly ornate inside and feels so spiritual inside. We spent time praying in the church and then walked outside to the cemetery. There are graves outside dating back to the 1500's. This is a beautiful historic church to visit with no admission fee to go inside.

If you were to tour Cork purely as an architecture-nerd, St. Finbarre's Cathedral would be an essential stop. Within walking distance of the city centre, the 120 year old cathedral is the home of more than seven centuries of worship. Inside they even have a cannon ball that hit the old cathedral during the siege of Cork in 1690. Outside is the beautiful Angel of the Resurrection, a gold leaf statue. St. Finbarre's is a really important part of Cork history, something permanent and beautiful in a city that has seen too much of it destroyed or forgotten.

    The lovely cemetery.

Absolutely stunning cathedral as well as inside as outside. I have a fascination for cathedrals, churches and very old historical monuments. I can assure you that I wasn't disappointed at all ! The outside of the cathedral is so impressive and beautiful with its Gothic style, surrounded by an old and charming Gothic cemetery. Inside was well worth. The architecture is amazing, the stained glasses are so large and fascinating. Across the panels of the church, you can read some stories...which help to understand the cathedral's history. I was also impressed by the massive organ. I would have loved to hear it but unfortunately it wasn't possible. I was lucky that it was opened when I visited the place -but from what I have heard, it could be closed from time to time. It is free admission but you can give a donation at the end of the visit. If you love taking pictures, churches, gothic inspiration and historical places ... you will be happy to have a look, very short walk from Cork City Center and the University. it played. A must-see on a visit to Cork.

Visited April 2015: "Started during the Early Middle Ages; mother church of Ireland" There was a 5 Euro fee, and we were giving a pamphlet regarding the church important features. This is not a difficult Cathedral to located, especially if you have detailed map of Cork with you. We were provided ours at our hotel. There is a map of the statues on the outer walls of the Cathedral. There's some impressive stain glass and mosaics. The only freemason female is buried here.

This Church sits up high above city centre. You can see it in the distance and its beauty draws you to get a closer look and to photograph it. You'll see what I am talking about when you walk around Cork and keep seeing it in the distance!

A beautiful, imposing cathedral that sits near the top of a hill a little outside of Cork centre (about a 20 minute walk). Architecture and presentation are outstanding, photography is allowed. One of the top sights in Cork, Ireland.

SHANDON CHURCH St Anne's Church, high on a northside hill,…read moreis one of the most familiar landmarks in Cork City, visited by many tourists but generally ignored as a visit by the locals. I walked up there recently and enjoyed my stroll. The historic church has eight bells 8 which weigh 6 tons and first rang out over the city in 1752. The patients in the nearby (now closed) North Infirmary would often have been disturbed from their slumber by the bells' vibrations (lessened in modern times by improvements in placement). But it is the clocks on the sides of the church tower that have most engaged Corkonians over the years who jokingly called them the Four Liars as it was reckoned that the four clocks never agreed on the time! Not that I've heard that joke recently! The "Goldie Fish" mounted high on the church has entered the local literature and indeed Shandon comes up regularly in the songs and poems of the city. Fr Prout's nostalgic lines below are probably the most famous "With deep affection and recollection, I oft times think of those Shandon Bells" Nowadays, after your visit to the church, where you can get to ring the bells and enjoy the view over the city, you may take a rest on the seats in the adjoining St Anne's Park before walking back down to the city centre.

Living right under the bell tower for one year and half and having to endure the other false notes is a completely other story. The entrance is expensive and the climbing quite dangerous. The view is cool.
