Love the music- contemporary but not overly trendy. Great sermons that you can often bring back into your own life. Wonderful volunteer opportunities. Something almost every week! Lots of gatherings- from small community bible study groups to cocktail hours after work to morning mommy meetings. "Dinners With Grace"- a monthly potluck hosted at someone's home is also a lot of fun. They also host an annual wine tasting event that all of my friends go to (and love)! Lots of foodies at this church =) Many young families- also some singles in their 20's, a few older folks. But mainly couples in their young/mid 30's with young kids. Plus, Sunday School offered every Sunday for the little ones! Come at 10am for coffee and increedddible muffins to socialize. Church is from 10:30-12ish. Free parking in the school lot- bonus!!
The best way to plug into the community at Grace is through one of our neighborhood groups.

Urban Village Church: Wicker Park has become my home in Chicago!…read more My husband and I were originally drawn to UVC: Wicker Park because of its strong commitment to Biblical integrity while also being resolutely affirming of all people in the LGBTQ community. What we discovered was so much more. UVC goes by the motto of being 'BOLD' (boldly rooted in the Gospel message of Jesus Christ), 'INCLUSIVE' (radically affirming of LGBTQ folks, striving to be an anti-racist church, and working toward all other areas of inclusivity and diversity equity), and 'RELEVANT' (living into our faith all week long, not just on Sundays). This motto is beautiful and helps my husband and I live into the lives we want to be. In fact, it was this very community that married us and has been with us through thick and thin. Pastor Hannah is an absolute gem, bringing engaging/powerful messages that are relevant to our current context in Chicago/USA/world! They truly do celebrate people of all backgrounds (i.e. they don't just give the LGBTQIA community a "seat on the pew", but actual voices and leadership roles). The people here are caring, honest, and supportive of each other, wherever you are on your life journey - even if you have doubts, trauma and uncertainty. Truly all are welcome here. UVC lives their mission of being bold, inclusive, and relevant by doing work in the local communities, and providing interactive ways to learn and give back during Black History Month, Pride Month, etc. with history walks and celebrations and hearing stories from the community lifted up. I've especially loved Pastor D'Angelo's creativity when it comes to services and community-building at Wicker Park; we've had breakout discussion groups during the service, creative use of the stage setup and props, we've heard testimonies, and listened to music together, and even ended the sermon early for a surprise coffee hour when Pastor D said "You know what? I can preach about community, or we can go do it right now," recognizing that coming out of the pandemic many of us don't know each other and haven't had real conversations together. Those conversations and laughter were much needed.

It's inspiring to see a church that remains faithful to the gospel and encourages its congregation to live and love like Jesus. I have been deeply and meaningfully encouraged by each service I attend. The pastors are anointed to deliver the freedom that only comes through Christ, and they humbly encourage personal insight into how God wants to speak to you as an individual. Attend if you are ready to be challenged to put your cares at the feet of Jesus and let him minister to your soul. The music is world class. Oh the people and staff were warm and friendly but the preaching never said a word about hell. There is the name of some man on virtually every door that they iconolize for something or other. The preaching is geared to people are so worthy that's why God saved them. Another weird thing they believe Jesus took our place on the cross as a substitute for our sins. They are sly but they are followers of D.L. Moody a revivalist so they didn't encourage witnessing. Moody taught God's hand doesn't move because the Christians aren't sorry enough and aren't confessing their sins earnestly and often enough, with strong crying and shaking but when they do get real sorry for their sins revival will come and a lot of people will get saved. According to the New Covenant of Jesus Christ there isn't any condemnation to the people of God. We know the devil is the accuser of the brethren. This is essentially a cult cloaked as a church deceiving many. I pray they will repent and turn to the truth of the gospel. The teachers and principal are always available to discuss whatever is on a student's or parent's mind, and the principal has a very visible and respected presence. The discipline policy is enforced and, unlike other schools, conflict between students is handled as soon as it is brought to the attention of teachers. The standards of conduct for students are very high. The School promotes Catholic values, spiritual and moral development. Incarnation priests are visible in the School and very friendly. So, we've always had a "home" parish that wasn't necessarilly right down the street. I know that used to be prohibited, but now you can join the parish of your choice. We eventually settled on St. Walter, and we like it because: --It's traditional. We have a Eucharistic Adoration Chapel, and the CCD program is solid. We also have Carmelite sisters who help with the school, the religious ed program, the masses....they're very kind and approachable, and they set such a great example for the schoolchildren. We also have active pro-life, peace and justice, and other groups. --The congregation is very representative of the cultural makeup of the city. I don't care what ethnic group my fellow worshippers belong to, but the fact is that in some parishes, if you're not a member of a particular group, you're always an outsider. Not so at St. Walter. --The church has become more aesthetically pleasing since they acquired an altar backdrop and several sculptures from Holy Rosary/Irish when it closed. HR is my baptismal parish, then we rejoined when we moved back to the neighborhood and remained until it was shuttered. St. Walter was built during the Church's "modernist/minimalist" design era, and lacked a lot of the vibrancy our Catholic artistic heritage has given us. The new furnishings make the church warmer. --St. Walter has a relationship with the Augustinian community. The local Augustinian fathers rotate through different masses, and it's always a treat to hear their thoughtful, insightful homilies. --Our current pastor deserves a lot of credit for the direction St. Walter Church is headed. He has also helped the school remain strong and true to Catholic values. If you're new to the area and are searching for a parish, you should consider giving St. Walter a try.

Pretty cool, isn't it?!? MEMORY LANE /a little history St. Joseph Parish is the only Back of the Yards "Polish Parish" to survive over the years. Two others: Sacred Heart of Jesus (46th St. & Wolcott Ave.) closed June 30, 1990 and St. John of God (52nd St. & Throop) was closed in 1992, then bulldozed in 2011. Although I had never been to Sacred Heart, I have fond memories of both St. Joseph and St. John of God. Fortunately, St. Joseph appears to be doing very well. St. Joseph Parish was formed in 1887 with the assistance of St. Mary of Perpetual Help. What is now St. John Paul II Hall was the original church. The current church opened in 1914. Like most churches built in its era, St. Joseph is a beautiful church. (Useful tip: Restrooms can be found on either end of the vestibule.) The RECTORY is at 4821 S. Hermitage Avenue. St. Joseph Plaza is now where the convent was once located--behind the rectory. It is an area with pavers that form a rosary. The pavers were purchased by the families that funded the project. St. Joseph Plaza opened in 2015. St. John Paul II Hall and St. Joseph Child Development Center, which once was St. Joseph's Elementary School, is located at 4800 S. Paulina St. Originally St. Joseph High School, Chavez Upper Grade Center is at 4831 S. Hermitage Avenue This building is now leased to Chicago Public Schools. PARKING There is a parking lot south of Chavez Upper Grade Center, however, it is my understanding that it can only be used on days when the school is not using it. According to the website, there is also parking on Sundays in the Chavez Elementary parking lot at 48th St. and Marshfield Avenue. There is also street parking available. WEBSITE St. Joseph's website was easier to find and to navigate than some other churches. I like that it mentions the church's history. The current Pastor is Father Ernesto Caicedo of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart. Masses: Monday to Saturday 7:30 AM (English) Sunday 7:30 AM (Spanish) 9:00 AM (English) 10:30 AM (Polish) 12:30 PM (Spanish) 5:30 PM (Spanish) MY RECENT VISIT Saturday, September 14, 2019 My timing was very good since the church happened to be open. I learned from some friendly parishioners that a Quincinera had just taken place. Since no other church services were going on at the time, I could visit the church and take some photos without disturbing anyone. (Yeah!) As I was taking pictures of my old high school (now Chavez Upper Grade Center), a nice gentleman stopped to chat. The gentleman works part-time for the church and I really enjoyed talking to him. He figured that I had probably gone to school here. It seems that I am not the only one that stops by to take new photos of a church and school with old memories.
