We took the guided tour ($8 for seniors) and had a phenomenal tour guide. He was a recent graduate with a degree in history. His tour was very informative and he tried hard to dispel some of the myths surrounding Daniel Boone and some misconceptions based on the Festus Parker protrayal of Daniel Boon on TV. He was great. After the guided tour of the house, we did a self guided tour of the historic village. This was well worth the visit.

However, we went to a wedding rehearsal after they told us over the phone we could, as long as it was between 3-5 people. When we showed up Nancy threw a total fit and would only allow one person inside the church at a time. We asked her if this is really how she wants to be remembered, as this was the first wedding, she didn't seem to care. Maybe this place should offer therapists, seems some of the work force is struggling at home...

Albert Stix is the owner of this experience which has a massive amount of airplanes, all focused on pre-WW2. I think the first hanger had some 40 of them to start with. Albert has been hands on with these planes for a long time and has some amazing stories from each of these, how they got there, and their various components. He is also quite a talker, but I found that our 8 year old grandson took in so much information, and had his own number of questions that were all answered with an intent to keep curiosity engaged. It's a quirky place, and is packed with memorabilia, but if you're into learning and gawking and fascinating a youth with airplane history and discussions, it'll be a blast!

We took advantage of the warmer weather and hiked the Thornhill Trail today. Even though it was a…read morelittle slick on the downhill with all the leaves on the ground, the trail was well-maintained. This trail is a linear trail so you're either going to do an out and back or your can opt to walk around the rest of the park via sidewalks and road. It is labeled as a black diamond but I would call it a "Missouri black diamond." The hills can be steep for some but the trail is plenty wide enough to step to the side and catch your breath, if you need.

First of all, it's free, which is incredible considering the quality of the collection. It's located in the middle of beautiful Forest Park, so even getting there is part of the experience. The museum sits on top of Art Hill, and the grounds are gorgeous with wide green spaces, walking paths, and beautiful views. It's the kind of place where you can easily spend an afternoon both inside and outside. The museum itself has an impressive collection spanning so many cultures and time periods. There are ancient artifacts, European paintings, sculptures, decorative arts... and yes, they even have Egyptian mummies. Seeing those in person was fascinating, although I'll admit it always makes me wonder about the provenance and how museum collections like that came to be. That's a much bigger conversation though. The staff were also fantastic. Everyone I spoke with was kind, approachable, and happy to share what they knew about the artwork and exhibits. You could tell they genuinely enjoyed being there. The only reason I almost docked a star was because I came across... well... a piece of poop on the gallery floor. It wasn't cleaned up immediately, and it seemed to sit there for a while before anyone noticed. It definitely caught me off guard. That said, I don't think it's really fair to blame the museum for another visitor's actions. Accidents happen, and while I wish it had been spotted sooner, it didn't take away from how much I enjoyed the museum overall. Beautiful setting, incredible collection, friendly staff, and one of the best free museums I've visited. Definitely worth a stop if you're in St. Louis.

It's located in beautiful Forest Park and the views of the park from the front entrance are great. The building itself is an architectural gem. We spent over 2 hours here and only scratched the surface.

It was still a fun experience, but not as chill as I hoped it would be. The front desk did let us know other days to try again if we wanted a more peaceful time lol. Anyway, they do not just house butterflies here. They got BUGS. Icky bugs and icky roaches and my son LOVED it. Luckily the icky bugs are behind glass and that is not very interactive lol. The actual butterfly house limits how many people can go in which is nice because once you get in, you are surrounded by butterflies. They will REALLY fly across your face and land on you if they choose. The staff recommends to walk slowly and to be mindful of your movements for the safety of the butterflies. It was such a beautiful area! I'd love to come back again. I think my son liked it, but he liked the icky bugs more lol.

The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The location is within a park that also has a playground and carousel. Outside are oversized sculptures of a butterfly and a caterpillar (kids can crawl through it). Once inside, there were educational exhibits with insects. We did not have to wait long at all to enter the butterfly area. There were lots of butterflies compared to other butterfly houses that I have visited. You could walk slowly through, or sit down, and they flew around or sometimes landed on you. The inside is very warm with lots of tropical plants and gorgeous flowers. There is also a gift shop, but some of the items are pricey (we did get a magnet as a souvenir).

An adorable, rustic log cabin in the midst of a modern-day subdivision, the Bacon Log Cabin is…read moreworth a trip. The cabin is open May-October on the 1st & 3rd Sundays from 1pm-4pm and maintained by the Old Trails Historical Society. 2015 marks the 180th anniversary of the cabin, which was built by William Douglas Bacon. Unfortunately, the structure contains little to no actual bacon (boo) but it has been restored as a pioneer cabin. The stone fireplace is original as are the logs, beams, and some fireplace bricks. The cabin houses period furnishings and a museum display of West St. Louis County historical memorabilia. The docent, Irene, was highly knowledgeable and extremely spry for 86. In addition to giving tours, she helped fund the preservation of the root cellar on the property, cans her own raspberry preserves, and quilts. I felt as though I had taken a step back in time to a simpler, but definitely not easier, way of living. There were a lot of things to take in during the walk through the cabin, including a kitchen, bedroom, working gun above the mantelpiece. In June 2015, the Forget Me Not Garden Club dedicated a Blue Star Memorial byway marker, honoring service men and women, that can be found near the front entrance. The dedication that members of this historical society have shown to restoring this structure and open it to public viewing is inspiring. A must see, underrated historical attraction for anyone with an interest in historic houses and Americana.

My Grant's Farm experience has been limited to the Christmas light show and Christmas village…read moreexperience but recently I've added the Clydesdale tour which was fantastic and a one of a kind experience getting to meet these magnificent creatures. My brain wasn't working correctly and we missed our tour time but the guide was kind enough to take us along during their tour. Mind you, we got there an hour and a half early but the brain cells died or something. Anyway, we got to pet the Clydesdales and had a close encounter with one. These horses are huge and very beautiful. We got to see a couple of them getting bathed and they were so gentle and well-behaved, I was quite impressed! The tour includes a free adult beverage or water for those under 21 or those who prefers a water instead. Our tour guide was amazing. I think she said her name was Linda. She was very kind and didn't even want any gratuity explaining that her role is a volunteer one. She's a retired educator and you can tell with the patience she had with her rather large tour group. The ticket price for the tour was pretty reasonable for the experience you're getting. You do pay for parking but you can take the tram for free to the village area for more activities. Unfortunately, we ran out of time the day of our tour so we didn't make it up to the village. You can take the trails (bike or on foot) and visit the farm though! When it's nicer outside, I fully intend to do so.
