    Altar being prepped for Adoration

Lovely aloha-filled parish located just minutes away from central Kapa'a. We were greeted by stewardship committee members who discerned we were visitors, and welcomed us with leis. Attended the 1700 Saturday evening Mass due to a Sunday morning return flight. Several joys experienced in addition to the bliss of attending the holy sacrifice of the Mass. Discovered that this was Fr William 's parish whom I knew from Oahu when he celebrated last year's 175th Anniversary Mass at Our Lady Queen of Peace basilica in Honolulu. Small world! He gave an excellent homily and his liturgical intonations/chants were flawless to behold. The final surprise was Eucharistic Adoration immediately after the Mass which we all happily stayed for. If your travels bring you to the Kapa'a area and you need a place to worship, look no farther than St Catherine's. Thank you for reading my review.

When you're at mass & the priest occasionally slips some Pidgin into his homily, you know it's going to be great day!!! I attended early morning weekday mass while on vacation, which starts at 7am. 30 minutes prior they pray the rosary, but it was pouring rain & I got there about 10 minutes before mass started. VERY nice, friendly people! I was clearly the only non-local there, but everyone was friendly and kind. A very small & simple service (no musical instruments). Really interesting murals depicting the roots/introduction of Catholicism to Hawai'i. I did go to another church while on the island, but if I lived here St. Catherine's would definitely be my family's parish. I can't wait to go back again on our next vacation!

Father Dario gave a wonderful homily. Expanded on the parable of the mustard seed. May we all be rooted and yet growing up towards God!

We attended mass on June 14, 2015. Sunday mass is at 7:30 am, 9:30, and 5:00pm. The earlier review said 7:00 am.

Our priest was Father Rinaldi, and although young, was surprisingly astute in his homily for his age.

Bible college students and interns were heavily involved while I was there, including leading the Wednesday night service with worship and teaching. - Warm community, I experienced lots of hospitality while I was there. - Pastor Bob leads by example. - Committed to the Bible. Concerns: - Their commitment to the Bible leads them to practice church discipline that occasionally escalates into asking people to leave the church. This can be good or bad, it's a tough line to walk, overall I think they show good discernment but I'm sure some cases haven't been handled in the best way. - I experienced fellowship from "the inside" as a Bible College student, I can't speak from the perspective of a newcomer that nobody knows. Overall: The best church experience I have had.

I am a newcomer to this island and the first thing I did was look for a church where I could praise…read moreGod and make new friends. Finally I tried to visit this church and after trying for 2 months, I felt that the pastor in his sermons was more just reading the bible without giving inspiration or motivation to the congregation. If I only listened to Brother Bruce reading the bible, I wouldn't need to come to church and because I have done that (I have finished reading the bible 3 times), one thing that made me want to ask Brother Bruce and I honestly feel that Brother Bruce is not worthy to be a leader pastor, he teaches something that is clearly contrary to Christian teachings, especially the 10 commandments of God, Thou shalt not kill !!!During mass on March 1, 2026, he justified the attack by Israel and America to kill the leader of Iran and also the attack caused the killing of hundreds of school children (they proudly displayed a picture of the Iranian leader with the sentence eliminated,) seeing this I felt disgusted and I asked myself why I was in this building? Is this a church? A pastor rejoices in the murder of someone he may personally hate. If Brother Bruce reads this, I hope he will re-evaluate and rethink the meaning of the Christian faith taught by Jesus Christ. Whatever the reason, there is no justification for murder.

Church dates to 1888 and as such, still retains most of the original architectural elements the French designers incorporated: proper narthex, nave, sanctuary, apex, and sited correctly "ad orientum" (facing east) so that the sun (symbolic of Christ) rises and illumines the altar where the Holy Sacrifice is re-presented at every Mass. Also contains the proper tabernacle and candelabrae so if desired, Mass in the Extraordinary Form could be offered/celebrated here. The altar is impressive and there are many other nice appointments that adorn the murae (walls) and ceiling. Many of the statues of saints date from the late 19th-20th century, and while the original stained glass appears to have been replaced by clear double paners, it doesn't detract from the majestic, and effectively lifts one's senses and thoughts to God (as is the whole purpose of church architecture) Lastly, we couldn't help but notice the outdoor replica of the 1858 holy grotto at Lourdes, France, reproduced with incredible detail. It was fitting that this be so prominently constructed near the front entrance as a nice reminder of the church's namesake. We were blessed to come here to worship with friends, so close to our lodgings. Actually got to talk with many parishioners including some who were born and raised on Oahu but relocated here. Hope to be back soon. Highly recommended if you are visiting locally and are searching for a church and need to attend Mass. Mahalo for making us feel welcome and mahalo to you for reading my review.
