St Canice's tower and cathedral.
This medieval church is so chock full of history and bursting at the seams with neat things, it simply must be a stop if you have time. We spent probably an hour there reading, learning and walking around.
Can you imagine climbing old ladders to the top of a tower that is over a thousand years old to look out over the view of a medieval city?
Can you picture sitting in a chair that has been used for the enthronement of Bishops and their predecessors for over 1,500 years?
Can you wrap your mind around young women, 'hermits' who dedicated their lives to pray for the church and who were then sealed into rooms (living tombs) for the remainder of their lives with only bread and water given through holes to keep them alive?
Does it pique your interest to see what kind of church would be led by a bishop who condemned people to die by burning for witchcraft?
St Canice's has it all plus lots more including a 'leper's squint!'
