When the foundation stone for this church was laid on 21 September 1868, there was nothing in the surrounding area to block the view of what would become a uniquely-shaped building.
The subscription list that raised £5,477 of the £6,600 required for its construction contains a few famous names from among Liverpudlian Victorians, including William Rathbone and PM William Gladstone.
Among these names are also contributions from Mr. Parker, a plasterer, Mr. Davies, a gardener, and anonymous people listed simply as "a poor woman", "a working man", and "a Free Churchman".
The church is built in the Italian basilica style with a high thin campanile. Inside it is a decorous neighbourhood church, now surrounded by terraced houses and recognisable from miles around. read more
