Whatever your degree of religious interest, the beauty hiding within Leeds Parish Church is something that needs to be experienced. The main section of the church is breathtakingly aesthetic. When I recently visited it, the sun was dramatically pouring through the beautiful stained glass windows, casting playfully colourful patterns on the stone floor. The intricately carved wooden seating and organ were perfectly framed in the gravitas of the room. Leading off from the main room, is The Lady Chapel. It is much smaller, creating a more intimate space. An elaborate altar sits at the head of the room, a lovely statue to focus on. The softness of the windows contrasts with the jagged edges of the furniture to spectacular effect. The website is updated regularly, providing information on times of services, performances by the choir and other music events. The ethereal beauty of the place evokes such peacefulness, you can't help but feel calm and collected. A wonderful place to contemplate, life, love, the universe, or just what to have for lunch.

Sadly a massive main road reaches nearly its edge and the way the city centre has developed, there isn't much else around it. If I was to redesign Leeds the city would shift sideways a bit so that this beautiful building was more a central feature. It beats the cathedral in terms of beauty and magnificence inside and out. I love the curling gothic details on each spire and the stain glass windows. It is definitely worth walking down this way just for the sake of checking it out sometime.

A few years on and its clear that this church is fully functioning and has an active congregation. There are flowers blooming in the garden area and a sign welcoming people in. This is great as it is such a beautiful building really adding to the traditional cityscape of Leeds with is blackened stone bricks from more industrial times. It lies on the road towards Headingley, a little way out of the city centre. The Ashwood group functions in the church, running music groups and a youth club. I have cycled past a few times on a Friday or Saturday night around midnight to see a few people gathered round a bbq giving out burgers to drunk students passing by. I have seen a similar crew in Headingley and I think they call themselves Jesus's Army, or something similar. Whilst I am not a Christian, I do admire the enthusiasm of the people involved in this church and how they engage with the community - I couldn't refuse a free burger on a Saturday night could I?!

The building is made out of real Yorkshire stone and its blackened facade reminds you Leeds was once an industrial centre. It is a piece of history amongst the fluctuating residents of Headingley. It houses plenty of other communities too - baby ballet, a baby singing group, a choir, karate lessons, a latin reading group and even a wine group (in a church?!). There are rooms available to hire out and the only downside in my experience is that the hall is a bit cold on a winter evening!

This church has only recently been shown in all its glory as for a long time it was covered in…read morescaffolding undergoing renovations. It now stands out on Boar Lane in the shopping area of Leeds as a magnificent Georgian building. It is a Church of England church and still holds services of Holy Communion Sunday, Tuesday and Friday although most people probably don't realise this. I heard that the congregation is very small (but strong) and for most of the time is is an arts and music venue holding gigs and exhibitions. It is a great venue for this so its nice to see that it can survive running simultaneously as a place for worship and art.

There's something really atmospheric and a little spooky about a rock/folk band playing in a church. And Amy's powerful, haunting voice only adds to that vibe (as well as plastering you up against the nearest wall with its power). The Evens ascetic, preachy vibe was perfectly suited to this venue: the hard wood pews, the spooky light coming through the stained glass windows, the (I think) Gothic architecture The packed hall, lots of people sitting cross-legged up front, it all gave a fantastic feeling of community very fitting to a church. It all just came together for one of the most intense gigs ever!

If you're looking for a supportive, loving, non judgemental Christian family, this huge, AH family is it! Hope to see you there sometime.

My only experiences of churches being massive great worshipping halls such as the church about a…read moremile out of my village back home where you can still here the bells ringing out on the village green on Sunday morning or Cathedrals with choirs and so on. I was hugely surprised by All Hallows, my friend took me along when I fist started coming to Leeds and we'd go to an extremely cheap yoga session that left us both floating and speechless for hours after. There's a community café, film night, meditation, breakdancing and all sorts available at prices people on low incomes can afford because the church works hard to secure funding to allow people access to activities that may otherwise be too costly. I am extremely thankful to the church for doing all this whilst still acting as a place for worship. I think it is a wonderful idea ad a massive aid to the community.

I have passed this church countless times and occasionally been amused by their encouraging posters…read moreabout Jesus and God. The latest reads something like - feel taken for granted? Imagine how God feels! I have never been moved to visit the church in a religious capacity, however. Like many churches these days, the hall acts as a community space. I have been to a few yoga and dance workshops here and the space is really great. Even though it is on the Otley Road, when inside it is very peaceful. At the back there is a large green area which is also very pleasant. I'm sure many community take advantage of this space by meeting here.
