What an impressive church! I am not religious myself, but have a high regard for those who are. This is listed on the Louisiana African American Heritage Trail because of it's historical beginnings. It is the oldest church in Louisiana, during a period when Catholicism was the only allowed religion in Louisiana. From the beginning, people of color had to fight for space in religion and a Battle of the Pew was started. In the end, people of color owned three pews per one white pew and there were pews designated for the enslaved in the back. The day I went, a person of color was leading the service. There was a nice mix of white and people of color in the audience. The auditorium is closed for repairs right now. Everyone seemed accepting. The Tomb of the Unknown Slave is along the side of this church. It isn't as fancy as St Louis Cathedral. It is in the Treme and set away from the Quarter. They do have a parking lot in back. read more

Attending mass at St Augustine is highly recommended, an extremely talented choir will have you tapping your feet and clapping your hands before this mass is over. I'm not catholic but have been to a few catholic masses. Attended Sunday mass with three family members who are catholic and attend church every Sunday. The group consensus was that this was the best experience of our trip to New Orleans. My 22 year old son might have liked Bourbon Street a little more but I could tell he enjoyed our visit to this historic church which is located in Treme just outside the Quarter. Plenty of parking in the grass lot next to the church, also visit the memorial to the unknown slave which is next to the handicap entrance. read more

So a few weeks ago,We called to inquire about home blessings. But the church hadn't gotten back to us. and 15mins ago,we called and the secretary was an older woman who so damn rude and hung up on us. So we thought okay,we'll find another church to attend. And so we contacted the aldmeran to see if it could be mediated because at one point it felt like if this person is rude to a few parishioners, who's to say that they aren't being rude to most if not,ALL of them?? It's frustrating because this whole thing could've been prevented. The Church is still damaged,but they're still taking our donations and hanging up on us.. HOW??? Wouldn't recommend this church to anyone. Take your donations to another service that will respect you as the parishioner. read more

First things first, I didn't go inside the church. I went to see the Tomb of the Unknown Slave. It seems important that, in a city full of historic cemetaries, that we spend some time considering the thousands of people who weren't given the option to be buried in those places. read more

for some reason I somehow envisioned I would be getting a "southern version" of catholic church.. it would be pew rocking and two stepping to the collection plate. mean we are in treme! it was nothing like that. everything you think catholic church would be - ! ho hum. I did like the fact that it was a mixed congregation with a come as you are attitude but that's as good as it gets. the soloist was horrid. after 20 minutes of hearing the "word" I got up and left. not my cup of tea. I didn't find religion that day. god forgive and the rest of you pray for me. *I must mention I was visiting and this church was suggested to us.* check it out for yourself. god moves in mysterious ways. read more

While the church welcomes all, I would encourage fellow tourists to dress up a bit. Excellent gospel music and solos, and an engaging pastor who gave a thoughtful talk. Plenty of parking on the street nearby. Safe area. The mass lasted about one hour and 40 minutes, so sit in the very back if you plan to sneak out early. The best music was at the end of the service, though. read more

With a back drop of fake news, bad news, and unthinkable acts in riots, bombings and scandal - good news can still be found in our collective humanity. Visiting St. Augustine's Church in the Treme is an experience I will never forget. It is the oldest African-American Catholic parish in the nation. I am not Catholic (Episcopalian - so "Catholic-lite") but I thoroughly enjoy attending mass in this historic church in the Treme. I first heard about this church from the documentary "Shake the Devil Off", which tells of the struggles this parish went through to keep their doors open after Katrina. I decided to visit the church on my own one Sunday and went back several times after. These are some of the friendliest people you will find in the city. They will come up to you before, during, and after the service to talk to you about most anything. The peace seems to go on and on while everyone hugs and greets everyone else in the church (I mean everyone!) This is a very tight community that welcomes newcomers with open arms. Parishioners even offered to drive me back to my hotel if I didn't want to walk through the neighborhood. My only advice would be to not have any sort of time crunch if you are trying to take in the full mass. This service tends to last a long time. You can expect at least 30 minutes tacked on to the typical mass time. Also visit the "Tomb of the Unknown Slave" monument on the side of the church for an added history lesson. read more

So, I basically woke up one Sunday morning and decided I wanted to visit a Catholic Church and luckily, St. Augustine was a fabulous choice! I honestly didn't know what to expect because I'm not catholic and I've never been to a Catholic Church before. "Never judge a book by its cover", they say, but I expected a fat white priest and and choir dressed like members of the KKK- very ignorant stereotype, but that is exactly why I decided to broaden my scope of perspective. St. Augustine has plenty of no hassle parking in the rear of the church which is great if you don't like street parking. Walking in the cathedral the high ceilings were the first thing I noticed in addition to the Corinthian detail on the columns. Beautiful to say the least. You can instantly see the history within the details of the walls. The stained glass windows were vibrant and captivating which made it very difficult to look away. Aside from the aesthetics, I made it just in time for praise and worship - which was decent. I like a little more soul, but the choir was upbeat and...nice. The priest is a African man who preached such a wonderful message. I felt the love within the message as well as throughout the entire building. I really enjoyed myself. The congregation is very diverse and the dress attire is either your fancy smancy Sunday clothes or dressy casual. Oh, I also went with my partner and I/we felt very comfortable and welcomed (no weird stares- if you care about that kinda thing). I will definitely visit again. 4 stars because the choir was....ummm....nice. I would be remiss in telling you that my stereotype of the Catholic Church has been eradicated. Keeping with the cliché: this story reads well. Go visit the church for yourself- don't take my word for it!! Happy visiting :-) read more

My husband and I like to attend Mass in cathedrals when we travel. Already been to St Louis Cathedral on Jackson Square, but found this one and based on the reviews, decided to try it. So glad we did!! It was a combination gospel/jazz Mass celebrated by a young, articulate priest. The choir was outstanding as were the musicians-I can't offer enough superlatives. Spiritual, uplifting and joyous. You won't be sorry you went. read more

Catholics please embrace St. Augustine's church! Lovely gospel/jazz liturgy which made me feel God's love and care. It's only a block away from the French Quarter. Even though my husband and I had already went to Ash Wed Mass at the main cathedral, I wanted to experience mass at St. Augustine...that's right...two masses and NO REGRETS...it was the most uplifting Ash Wed Mass I'd ever been too. The community, though small, is so welcoming to both blacks and whites. No one should feel out of place. If I moved to New Orleans, this is where I would worship for sure. read more

I was glad to take time out from a business meeting to attend the liturgy here. A Catholic who has played at a jazz Mass in Brooklyn since 2008 (I had a stroke while playing my horn during communion in 2009 and have now switched to soft drumming at my doctors' and fellow musicians' recommendation), I was pleased to be able to attend another jazz Mass in January 2012. Effective choir, drums and sax. Toward the end of the liturgy, everyone who was visiting introduced themselves and were asked to say where they were from. Be prepared for a liturgy that lasts clost to 1 1/2 - 2 hours, though. read more
