I was a member of Buckhead Church in Atlanta for 5 years before moving here to New Orleans. Both Harbor and Buckhead church are affiliated with Northpoint Ministries and Andy Stanley. The "style" of this church was very similar to in the laid back dress, rockin' music, and uber friendly greeters. However, unlike my church, my former church, which beams in messages from Northpoint and has about 1000 attendees per service this church has a solid 100 folks in a service and a HILARIOUS pastor live an in person. Although I don't quite feel this is where God is leading me to plant, I do plan on continuing to visit as I search out my permanent home. I would highly recommend to any visitor or newbie searching for a new spiritual family that will encourage your spiritual journey. read more

This church is amazing! I was looking for a place that felt like a real home and Harbor is it. Someone I went to high school with told me about Harbor and how much they loved it. I tried it out, and now I love it too! The people are so friendly. The band is amazing. The messages are practical, clear, and really apply to my life. I never get the sense that I'm being judged or have to be someone I'm not. I've formed real relationships with genuine people. And I've never been to a church that's so comfortable for guests and visitors. I'm never afraid to invite my friends to a worship service. There are small groups, service teams, and community volunteer activities. They've made it so easy to be involved and get connected! I'm so glad I've found a place I can love! read more

WOW! Where do I begin?? Harbor is such an awesome place. It is a church for people who don't like to go to church. It is unlike any church I've ever been to. As soon as you walk in the door, someone greets you and walks you to your seat, how cool is that!! Then someone gives you a quick rundown of the service, the band places great music and then the pastor, James Welch, teaches from the Bible but in terms that apply to my life in today's world. People are experiencing life change and meeting nice friends on similar paths. My advice is to try it 1 time, just once. I promise, you will love it. read more

The atmosphere is welcoming. the greeters ought to work the red carpet at the academy awards, they are so good! the music is rockin and it will give you chills one minute and put a big Ol' smile on your face the next. the production is awesome. You can bring the kiddies to the " Itty Bitty Bayou" and they go crazy for it. I feel like that " hair club guy " , I'm not only a member... but I'm a volunteer. YES!!! Harbor is exactly what I was looking for when I moved to NOLA. I tried many other churches but none felt quite right. Harbor is honestly NOT about religion!!! It is all about relationships. Kevin leads the Worship and is one of a few Worship leaders that I have heard who truly makes worship a transcendent experience. I have attended Harbor for over 5 years now and it has radically changed my life for the better. Through practical messages, service teams, and groups I have grown in maturity, spirituality, and leadership. I even met my future wife while serving in the preschool environment! I cannot promise my single friends out there that the same will for sure happen for you, but is what you are doing working? ;) But seriously, if you are looking for a church that strives to be welcoming to people from all walks of life, I hope you will check out Harbor. Services last about an hour and five minutes and start with a welcome and a few songs. The words will be on the projector screens if you like to sing along, I sure do, but some people just don't enjoy singing and that is okay too. The messages are designed to take what the Bible says and make it applicable to modern life. I googled community church and Harbor was the first church that popped up. From my first visit, I could feel that it was truly a community. Warm greeters at the door, Super cool atmosphere, rockin band and laid back vibe!!. I liked it.. It was definitely different from my tradition southern baptist roots., but I enjoy the practical message from a hilarious, transparent and personable Pastor. I just recently started helping out at Harbor for praise and worship. The worship band members truly have a heart for God and it was and is a pleasure to worship and praise along such passionate followers of Christ. The band receives help from seminary students, local instrumentalists, and singers. Apart from the praise and worship, the Church sees about 125 people on Sunday and has a great senior pastor who knows how to shepard and guide the surrounding community with sound biblical and theological truth with Jesus Christ at the center. I've prayed about finding a church to start a membership with and I believe I've found it at Harbor. Come and visit on any Sunday for either the 9:45am or 11am service. Harbor Community Church is the complete opposite of any church I ever attended as a kid. It is a place of acceptance; focusing on a relationship with God and friendships. It is not about a bunch of rules to follow or hoops to jump through to be in God's good favor. The messages make the Bible easy to understand and relate to everyday life. This church is truly about being the church and helping the communities around them instead of just coming to a church building. I started volunteering right away and formed close friendships. If you're looking for a great church in New Orleans, check this one out! First off, logistics: Harbor is easy to find, located conveniently off 610 in Lakeview, right on Canal Blvd (corner of Canal & Germain). Parking is all on the street, however, so best to arrive early. Extremely guest friendly and laid back--always people out front to greet you and give directions, and most people tend to dress pretty casually on Sunday mornings. Sunday services last about an hour, and childcare (Itty Bitty Bayou) is available kids up to Kindergarten. Atmosphere is upbeat, with great, energetic music, funny videos, and messages that are easy to understand and practical. The pastor, James, is funny and engaging, and unlike most other pastors you'll ever meet, in a good way :) Harbor's big push is to be a place for people who are either not interested in church, burnt by religious stuff in the past, etc, to feel welcome, and they do a great job with this--I've been going for a while, and always feel comfortable bringing friends. Lots of good stuff happening here, with both morning services (9:15 & 11:00) growing each week. The noise levels and complaints that come from this facility is beyond bearable. I have called and spoken the the, "Deacon" or whoever he was, with no change. It is 10:15pm on a Sunday Night and they have a loud truck, with 7-10yr olds playing in the street and in front of the "Church". They place banners all along Canal Blvd and the attendees do not live in nor respect the neighborhood. read more

All of the reviews before mine are all absolutely true! I've been attending Harbor for about a year now and it is an amazing church. The atmosphere is not at all intimidating. If you've been away from church for a while, or have never been to a church, this is the place you want to go. It's a laid back atmosphere. People are kind, down to earth, every day kind of people. You won't ever feel like someone's judging you, as we've all screwed up at one point or another (or many many times), and are all trying our best to be better people. The people that go here are very welcoming, the Sunday service is engaging and so applicable to my life, and there is a fantastic environment (the Itty Bitty Bayou) for my 7 month old daughter to go to while I'm in the service. My wife and I recently just moved from Alabama to be a part of Harbor in New Orleans. We have been searching for a long time to be a part of a church that we can call home. It's safe to say once we walked into Harbor we knew the search was over. When we arrived we met a guy named Eric who was funny and energetic and very helpful to show us where everything was. Then we ventured into the connect hall where we found FREE COFFEE!!! Then we made our into the auditorium where the music was amazing and the pastor was very hip and practical in his teaching. Sorry its long but, but five stars isn't enough to convey how I feel about this place. I started looking for a church and bounced around to a handful throughout the city, but I kept running into stuffy churches with like a bunch of things I had to know to fit in or get along. Or they wanted me to sign up for something or singled me out as a visitor, just didn't like being out on the spot like that. So a friend of mine told me about this little church in Lakeview. I'm not like a church-y person but he insisted that I would enjoy myself. I walk in and right off the bat the people at the front door made me feel super welcome. There was a lot of chatting going on. You could tell there were a lot of friends here catching up with each other about their week. Then there's a guy that comes up and gives a rundown of what to expect. That settled my nerves a little bit. Then the band started. Um, wow, this random looking group of people put on a show fit for the arena man. Then the pastor comes out, and this guy was not what I was expecting. He's kindov a young looking dude, and didn't have the normal "pastor comb-over" that I tend to anticipate. Lol Just a normal dude. Then he starts "preaching". More like TEACHING. He gave me practical insight into some things that are in the Bible. It made me want to go see what I was missing. So they offered to give me a bible of my own. They wrapped it all up in an hour and it was over. So I thought. The people that attend the church are awesome people. I was invited to lunch and it was really cool to hang out with these church people who didn't judge me on some of the things that I told them I had done, but shared things that they struggled with. We moved to the New Orleans area about 2 1/2 years ago. We spent nearly a year trying out various churches, all wonderful in their own ways. We met many great people as we searched high and low for a church family where we felt we could grow spiritually and give back in return. The moment we experienced Harbor about 9 months ago, my husband and I knew we found our church home. Friendly faces greeted us and directed us when we first walked up. The worship was contemporary and heart felt. The sermon was applicable, passionate, and even humorous at times. We met folks who made us feel right at home and gave us information right away about a gathering time where we could meet other folks from the church. After our first visit to Harbor we went to a FUSE event, which is a casual dinner night twice a month (usually at Dat Dog or Cheeseburger Eddie's) aimed at helping Harbor goers/visitors connect. It was such a meaningful night because I felt like I had new friends immediately. Because we experienced that connection at the FUSE event, coupled with an amazing Sunday experience, we decided to keep coming back to Harbor. We feel safe, wanted, and needed at Harbor. We feel excited and comfortable about inviting any of our friends or family to come to church with us. I am thankful to have a church family that continually pours truth and goodness into my life amidst this busy, sometimes chaotic world. read more
