Included in the stock are many fascinating collections, including many of specific local interest, and a photographic archive (open to the public on Thursday mornings). The library also hosts a number of free lectures on topics of cultural interest. There is a small membership fee, but the experience of browsing the card index or dipping into such an extensive and eclectic stock is worth every penny of the modest charge.

Not tons of books, but the people in charge are lovely and friendly. If there's a title you're after and they don't have it, they'll order it in for you, and it will be there within a couple of days which is a really nice surprise next time you pop in. The childrens section has a nice comfy chair where you can sit and read with your kids - it's great.

A computerised system for returns and…read moreloans of books now operates which scans the books and displays the information on a large, easy to read screen which you touch to navigate through the options. This leaves the staff free to deal with customers and means that returning books is very quick and easy. Reading schemes operate for young children where they are rewarded with a free DVD for each 10 times they come into the library and retell a book they have read to a member of staff. The staff are always keen to see the children. Computers are also available on a booking system but this is usually a 'book it and come back later' particularly in school holidays or after school close for the day.

If something isn't in stock it can be reserved and this is free if the reservation is made on a children's ticket. Has recently become automated which is a shame because it reduces interaction with the very pleasant staff. Everyone should be a member of a library!

They meet every month on a Saturday and cover a wide range of genre from classical English poetry to haiku, tanka and haibun. Short stories are also enjoyed as are various forms of creative fiction and non-creative texts.
