baby catfish caught at Squirrel Lake Park

great fishing spot! tons of baby catfish and bluegill that aren't scared to bite! :) only went fishing for about an hour and a half today and caught 4 baby cats and a bunch of smaller bluegill! I will definitely be returning to go fishing again at this park.

The town of Matthews doesn't have too many parks. I believe that Squirrel Lake is the largest one of their inventory with 36 acres of recreational space. There are two shelters, a permanent structure with restrooms, a pond that is complete with a fishing pier, playground, swing sets and even a 12 hole disc-gold course. There is also access to the Four Mile Creek Greenway from here. Some more parking would be good. I was at the "Shelter B" area and all but one space was used. [Review 11580 overall, 1360 of 2019.]

This is a lovely park. If you live in Thornblade or Ashley Creek it is an easy walk to the park and down to the playground and fishing lake. The playground is always clean. There are several play sets for varying ages. My son is younger (1 1/2) and he has more than enough to keep him busy including a few bucket swing seats, smaller slides, little mountain to climb and bouncing animals. There are several pavilions that have picnic tables. The fishing lake is nice and you can bring a fishing pole and try your luck. There is also a walking trail and restrooms that I have not used, but they are there and see many people using both. I removed 1 star because it can get crowded a d if you drive parking could be an issue due to limited parking spaces. All in all a great park that we frequently use and it is a wonderful extension of Thornblade or Ashley Creek neighborhoods.

Wonderful place. No matter if it's summer or winter. You can bring your kids/pets/bicycles/or just enjoy a pleasant walking. There's a big playground, with clean restrooms (I'm writing this, because another similar places don't have). You can use the grills or just sit down in comfortables picnic areas. That are not only round the lake. You can fish as well. The only con is the entrance, has not been paved yet. We've been here like 4 times, never ended the trail. Hope next time! Ps: bring your drink!, and enjoy nature, little friends (animals) and the peaceful.

Beautiful residential park in Matthews. Family and dog friendly. There was a pond and a lot of space for recreational outings. Many people in bikes, a few fishing in the pond, families sitting for a picnic and watching the geese walk by. There were swings and playgrounds and an area for disk golf. Highly recommend if you're looking for a stroll in the park, go out for a run, or walk the dog. Parking can be limited.

We have been here quite a few times. Great place to meet up with friends. Great place for a family day. Great place to take the dog for a walk. Every time I have been, the ladies room has been out of toilet paper though. :/

It's so serene and tranquil just to sit by the pond and listen to nature do what it does best.

This park is such a beautiful place. It's so serene and tranquil just to sit by the pond and here nature do what it does best. The laughter of joy from the children playing in the nearby jungle gym. Such an awesome place!

My grandkids had a great time at this park near their house in Matthews, NC the other day. It even has a green roof on one of the shelters.

Perfect for the kids and to take the little one fishing. Also great for the dog. Would love to use the picnic area one day with the family!

Most of the trails lead to residential areas but if i read the signs correctly I think some of the trails lead to downtown Matthews.

I found a trail at this park on AllTrails and it looked nice so we decided to check it out…read more The beginning of the trail was really nice. It goes through a wooded area and down to the river. Then the trail suddenly becomes a disc golf course. Now the disc golf course seemed really nice, but I wouldn't recommend hiking a disc golf course. You're just in the way if people are playing. There's a nice lake later in the course. Overall, I'd recommend it for disc golf or maybe just to hang out at, but I wouldn't recommend walking through the disc golf course like AllTrails recommends.

On our park tour of the city we landed at Idlewild Road Park. This park is amazing. We only visited…read morethe playground area but loved it. The playground equipment is so cool. They have a bunch of really nice pieces I have never seen before. The playground is also huge. There is so many different areas to choose from. The only bad part is one piece of equipment isn't safe. My nephew decided to play incorrectly on the 4 person see saw piece and his foot got scraped up pretty bad. Make sure that your kids don't try to ride/sit/stand on the middle piece of the see saw. There were two groups grilling out at two different shelters close to the playground. They both surrounded the playground. The one thing that impressed me the most was how clean the restroom was. The restroom is super close to the playground too which is very convenient. This park is kinda far from me but I will definitely make the trip out here for the nibblings.
