Came here for a drink after dinner and was shocked by the service. The same girl asked us if we needed anything else 3 times in about 5 minutes while we still had mostly full glasses. One time I can understand to be on top of things, but after the 2nd time we told her we were just there for one. Then she returned. We went to pay at the bar and found out we had been put on one bill and they cannot split checks. It's easy enough with paypass, the employee types in the amount to charge, so I cannot understand this. When we asked about splitting we were just told 'no' and had the bill put in front of us. Not, 'no, sorry, there's an ATM *there*' or anything. The art over our table consisted of a rotund old man with scabs on his knees and swatting flys. read more

I have a long list of reviews waiting to be written but we had such a good time here it can't wait, so it pops to the top of the pile. Disclaimer, I know a staff member here, thanks goodness, or we may not have gone. A very eclectic bar, cafe and restaurant in a strip of bar cafes and restaurants, with the owners huge Hunter S. Thompson fans. Tells you something right there. Staff are quirky, menu is small but actually quite thoughtful, cocktails, wines and beers likewise thoughtfully selected. For four of us we ordered four share plates and a main - two servings each of the calamari and rump steak share plates, and 10 hour cooked rib for the main. O yeah and the roast head of garlic and sourdough. Yum! Glass of Young Henry's finest lager, bottle of white, away we went. The calamari is possibly the most tender i have ever eaten - amazing. The rump steak, rare-ish and sliced with a dipping sauce, lovely, garlic and sourdough, fantastic. Then along came the ribs, slabs of beef so tender and delicious I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Seriously, best cut of beef I've eaten in ages. Then we ended the evening with several whiskies from the pleasingly broad range they have available - BOOM! Winner right there. So, get the hence forthwith. You will not be disappointed. read more

A random little time-warp bar in the middle of Randwick with delicious, slowly-made cocktails. 9.00pm on Wednesday night I've made a last minute decision to go for a drink somewhere local that I haven't been to before and I end up at Bat Country; where the paintings on the walls are ancient, it's stuffy-hot inside (thank god for the breeze through the back door) and the menu is whacky. They'd run out of Sav Blanc but a Pinot Grigio has come to save the day. I highly recommend the San Juan Slipper cocktail (vanilla vodka, passionfruit, apple, pineapple and agave)! The Smoking Mary cocktail is not for the faint-hearted or vegetarian. I don't suggest going to this bar on a school night for a quick drink because there's only one bar tender making cocktails and he's taking his sweet-ass time. read more

Thank you Randwick for this little gem of a place - how nice it is to have a bar like this to go to for brunch and/or a few drinks without having to go to the CBD if I'm not in the mood. Went there for brunch - my bacon and eggs I must say were nothing special, just standard, but the almond croissant my friend and I shared....worth every calorie and then some. The waitress was super friendly, was wearing a Led Zeppelin shirt AND they were playing good ol' classic rock. Such a refreshing change from most bars in Sydney. Can't wait to go back to try 'The best cocktail in the world' - I might even settle for second best. read more

Coming of age in the USA in the 1960's we missed Woodstock (STRIKE 1) and most issues of Rolling Stone so never heard of Hunter S Thompson (STRIKE 2) but we are still in the game and have arrived at Bat Country in Sydney, Australia for a bit of cultural remediation! It's a half hour bus 373 ride off the beaten tourist track and worth the trek for boomers and the kids/grand kids who love them. (Past parks, schools, horse race track, brick apts, neighborhood shops). Friendly service. Water provided immediately without asking. East Eight Hold Up gets your day off to a good start so does the coffee. Late breakfast of Green Eggs & Ham and lunch of free range chicken breast with beet root purée were delicious and good sized. Gluten free options are available. Listening to soundtrack I'm pretty sure that if Forrest Gump were to meet Johnny Depp it would be at Bat Country. "Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know..." ...which cover of Rolling Stone will capture your attention in the can. Vintage decor! Walk 10 min down hill to beautiful Cogee Beach then bus back to central city. read more

Had a whiskey sour and a half pint. The sour was ok. Bit sweet for my taste but infinitely drinkable. The beer was young Henry's. Both good. The bar staff were hospitable but not warm. Solid 3 stars Not sure if come back but perfect for a pre film drink. read more

The jerk meathead fraternity boy bartender who idolizes 1) Blach Sabbath and 2) himself is reason enough not to go again, but because of the atmosphere and good cocktails we'll give it another go. Not only when we attempted to order a drink at the bar, did he say "its gonna be a while" (when the other bartender heard then promtly and kindly took our order) and he blatantly ignored other patrons waiting for a drink, but was quick to serve all his mates when they came in. A great range of craft beers. Fabulous service from a funky waitress with the gift of the gab. I have just got back from NYC and I am missing it so much it hurts. It was a pleasant surprise when this funky small bar popped up in the suburbs and I'm proud to have it as my local. Monday is the new Sunday for a roast! The $15 Monday roast special is a cracker - generous serving of tender beef and a heap of vegetables means you can still have a healthy start to the week. Of course matched with a Radio Boka Tempranillo that is only $7 if you're there before 7pm. If you love a good cocktail then make sure you sit at the bar and watch the magic happen. Not a local to Sydney so I had eaten out at a lot of place prior to coming to this one, and by far best food I had in that city yet. The calamari is to die for, I have not, to this day, had a better calamari dish. cocktails are the best and most authentic I found in Sydney. Thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and the people working seemed to enjoy working as well. The food is fantastic and whether eating or just out for a drink this place won't disappoint. I have been there with my husband and friends now many times... In saying that on Saturday April 26, (my 15th trip to this place) I brought a new friend along with me... We were served by a brunette American girl who would if this was my first visit there, probably make me decide not to return. The rude and abrasive nature of what was meant to be a person in hospitality and customer service was appalling. We arrived at 4:45 and I promptly asked for a house red wine, upon which I was told. "There are no red house wines, the wine list is in that book (she pointed)...Choose from there" No recommendations, no offer of what may be popular! Then as my friend accompanying me does not drink alcohol so we asked the waitress if she may be able to have a mocktail made for her. She promptly replied "I don't know if we can do that" and then I asked her if she may ask the bartender upon which this was no problem at all.. The icing on the cake was at 4:57pm we asked to place our food order... She replied while pointing to the menu "there are no food orders until 5pm, its says that right there" "If you want to order food you will have to wait until then" (THREE MINUTES!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?) Well if this was my establishment I would have the girl firstly speak with an ounce of respect to the customers, and if they ask for something be a little more accommodating, if its 3 minutes until the kitchen opens take the order and advise at 5pm that it will be placed for the kitchen to make.... This is a real shame as Bat Country is one of my new favourite places in the area and this waitress is doing a serious disservice to the owner! I came to find out that her shift ended at 5pm, hence the poor attitude??? Our next "uni student Aussie" server was fabulous! Friendly, funny, and welcoming! First, a disclaimer; a relative is a part owner, although he no longer directly works there. I'm not sure if this'll get published, but its best to be up-front. It provides, great service, food, coffee, cocktails and other drinks in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. I've visited it numerous times since it opened when staying in Sydney and have only once received less that stellar service; and that was when about 20 of us turned up for tea on a Wednesday night, when they simply didn't have enough staff on duty, in spite a a few hours notice. I generally have breakfast there, have stopped by for a coffee at various times and have spent numerous enjoyable evenings there, enjoying the food and learning a lot about drinks. I'm often by myself when visiting and have met a range of fascinating people at the bar and had long conversations. read more

This is easily one of the best cocktail bars in Sydney. Not the sex on the beach shitty fruit cocktail bars, but a true cocktail bar. I've personally sampled the New Orleans holy trinity of Sazerac, Vieux Carre, and Louisane cocktails, and the attention to detail, presentation and skill of the bartenders (particularly the manager), is outstanding. I *cannot* recommend this place highly enough, it's the *ONLY* good cocktail to be found in the Eastern Suburbs and handily one of the best in the city. Go! Go now!! read more
