Our child has been at OHU/Wilmette for about 2 years. My wife and I cannot say enough about their infant curriculum and most of the teachers. We are currently in the toddler program and since we began with OHUW, it always seemed to us that the policy and procedures of the daycare program itself were not always rooted in what was best for the children and families. For example, it is policy of the daycare facility to take the children outside during the summer, regardless of temperature, twice a day. Keep in mind, these are children under the age of 3. Maybe not unusual until the temperature raised well into the 90s. Upon questioning the decision to take the kids outside, the answer we received was... "It is our policy to take the kids outside twice a day. If this is not your preference, you must come take your child out for the day." They also made it known that our fee would not be refunded whether our child stayed or left. Another example is their vacation policy. If you need to limit the number of days you bring your child to daycare for any extended period of time, you need to commit to specific days during the week. We had our child there on Mondays and Wednesdays for a few months. One week our child had a fever on a Sunday evening and they are supposed to be fever free for at least 24 hours to not infect the other kids. Upon calling OHUW to let them know that we would not be attending the Monday, we explained the situation and asked if we could bump our day until Tuesday. They stated that "it was not their policy to accommodate this request and that if we wanted to bring our child on Tuesday, they would charge us for Monday and an additional $85 for the Tuesday". It is like they would prefer us to bring in a sick child so we wouldn't lose out on our money, or they were happy to force us to pay for doing nothing. Another example occurred today. The high temperature outside was 17 degrees, but the heating system was broke and our child's classroom temperature literally reached 93 degrees. Upon questioning Sue, the administrator, Sue, the administrator present, we were told that "it is an old building" and they "were working on getting it fixed". Our child's teacher explained that it was so hot that the kids didn't even want to eat lunch. We shared our concern that the classroom was drastically hotter than it should have been and that the extreme temperature change from outside to inside would create an unhealthy environment for the kids. We then asked what accommodations they were prepared to make to ensure the safety of the kids. We were told they would make no accommodations and that it was our right to not bring our child... but they would still be charging us regardless if we came or not. Needless to say, this was the last straw and my wife and I are eagerly looking for a different childcare establishment. Keep in mind... all of this, and we still paid over $20,000 last year in tuition. Stay away if you have another option... there are definitely better out there. read more
