I was vacationing with my family last week in Durango, and we happened upon this store while…read moreshopping in the downtown area. All three of my sisters and I made purchases, including souvenirs, and I bought a pair of sunglasses that I liked. Unfortunately, after wearing the sunglasses for a while the next day, I found that they pinched the sides of my head and gave me a headache -- something I could not have discovered by simply trying them on for a minute or two in the shop. When we returned to the downtown for more shopping a few days later, I brought the sunglasses back into the store and requested a refund. Note: my mistake for not asking about the return policy prior to purchase, hence my two-star rating (not one). The cashier (could have been the shop owner) refused my refund because she claimed the glasses were scratched. If there are scratches, they are microscopic and probably were there when I bought them, because I kept the glasses in my own hard-cover sunglasses case from the moment I removed them from my face on the day I wore them until the moment I returned to the store -- but honestly I don't see any scratches on these glasses. She went on to say, "I don't even think Walmart would [accept the return]," which I found both rude and puzzling. Is she comparing her store with Walmart? Wouldn't she rather compare herself with Nordstrom, where essentially I could return a pair of sunglasses broken in two pieces and they would accept the return? Or a quaint boutique where the shop keeper strives to please her customers, particularly female travelers who are prepared to spend money on souvenirs for themselves and their kids, and with whom you only get one chance to make a good impression with stellar customer service? (Consider that when we returned with my Mom to shop the downtown a second time, I steered her away from this shop and we shopped elsewhere, where my Mom spent a bunch of money buying clothes and souvenirs for her daughters and grandkids.) In any case, I certainly didn't get the feeling that she thinks of her shop as a place where the shop keeper creates a personal and memorable connection with guests -- which is the whole point of my family and I shopping in a downtown boutique. If I wanted to buy glasses at Walmart, I would have gone there. It's unfortunate that I can't recommend this shop to anyone shopping in Durango.

Switching from skateboards to snowboards but this place was RAD. 10/10/16 Skateboard wise: Great gear selection. Few decks. Mostly trucks and wheels. I probably missed a good portion of the summer shop though. Sounded from the owner like they swap a ton of displays out entirely. Summer/Winter but still it was more impressive than most. Snowboard wise: Best store I've seen. Travel weekly for work and between moving to CO 2015 to now this is the most impressive store. Staff was friendly. They can do tune ups in house, some serious repairs too it seemed. Waxes. Detuning, all the basics. Googles, gloves, boots, bindings, jackets, pants, roller bags, board sleeves, stomp pads, and a wide selection of boards. All styles and sizes, more even than my recent trip to Christy Sports for a cheap 2016 four pack. And they are still swapping over and getting rid of last season things for new gear this season. Throw your money at this store! Next time I'm in town I'm buying a large gear bag. Looking forward to riding Purgatory and having all my boarding needs handled at the haus!

We showed up there last week with my son's brand new board which was very damaged (the tip was flayed open) and John (?) -- artiste extraordinaire -- did an amazing job for a reasonable price. We drive up from Chandler Az 3 times a year to ski at Purgatory (well my son went to the dark side and snowboards) and it occurred to us to bring the broken board with us (damaged at Flagstaff). An emotional experience that ultimately brought Athena home with us…read more My wife and I are a little conflicted about how to review LPCHS because our experience had a pretty significant bump in the road before ultimately becoming one of the best adoption experiences we could have asked for. First, the thrift store is absolutely worth mentioning. It helps support the shelter next door, and we've found some phenomenal deals every time we've visited. On our most recent trip, my son found a Nike hat that looked brand new for only $5. We also regularly look through the books and can usually leave with a pile for less than $10. Then there's the shelter. We originally went in simply wanting to see some of the dogs. After walking through a couple of the kennels, we met Athena, a 7-year-old Boxer who had recently lost her owner and had also been returned after an incident involving a cat in her new home. Something about Athena immediately felt different. We continued through the kennels and saw plenty of other healthy, happy-looking animals, but we couldn't shake the feeling that Athena was meant to come home with us. We went to the front counter, explained our home situation, and mentioned that we have an outdoor cat. That's where things initially went sideways. We were told that having a cat immediately disqualified us from adopting Athena. There wasn't much discussion beyond that. After feeling like we had potentially just found a new member of our family, hearing that we couldn't adopt her because we had a cat was honestly heartbreaking. We've previously owned two Boxers, so we weren't unfamiliar with the breed or the responsibility involved. We also felt like we never really had the opportunity to discuss the circumstances of Athena's previous adoption or explain how our home is set up. We left pretty disappointed. But after lunch, we decided to go back. I spoke with another staff member because I wanted to understand what had actually happened with Athena and the cat in her previous home. That conversation was completely different. I learned more about the circumstances and explained that our cat lives in an outdoor space with clear escape routes and that we understood the importance of introducing Athena and our cat in a controlled environment. Instead of simply saying no, the conversation turned into, "Let's evaluate this." Liz, the manager working that day, helped us schedule an appointment with a behaviorist so we could actually see Athena around a cat and better understand what we would be taking on. That evaluation changed everything. Athena's interaction with the cat was far less concerning than we had initially imagined. She was able to disengage, and it didn't appear to us that her behavior was malicious. It became easier to understand how a previous interaction in an uncontrolled environment could have escalated. We were then able to introduce Athena to our kids in another controlled environment. The shelter has a really nice, well-maintained play yard with turf, rocks, boulders, and toys where the dogs can interact with families. Aiden, the behaviorist, was fantastic. He was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and patient while explaining Athena's temperament, what to watch for, potential concerns, and what we needed to understand about adopting a 7-year-old Boxer who needed a loving home for her senior years. One thing that really stood out was how willing the staff were to put the animals first. They even allowed us to use their "boardroom"/lunchroom area to conduct the cat evaluation while staff were eating and taking their breaks. They could have easily said it wasn't a good time, but instead they shared their space because it was important for Athena's adoption process. And after all of that... We adopted Athena. She came home with us, and within her very first night, she was already making herself comfortable. We couldn't be happier with how the introduction has gone so far, and we're incredibly excited to give her the loving home she deserves. They even sent her home with an adoption-day cake dog toy, along with a certificate for a bag of food we could pick up at Pet Haus down the road. So yes, our first interaction with the shelter left us frustrated and heartbroken. I don't want to pretend that part didn't happen. But what ultimately matters is that we came back, asked more questions, and the staff were willing to listen, reevaluate the situation, involve behavioral expertise, and give Athena the opportunity to find the right home. And now that home is ours. Welcome to the family, Athena. LPCHS, thank you for helping us find her and, more importantly, for ultimately being willing to look at the individual situation rather than just the circumstances on paper.

However, from an outside perspective, it doesn't seem like much has changed at all. In fact, I feel like it's gotten more expensive, and more picky with what items they put out on the floor. In general, it just feels like a boutique now. It's clean, well thought out, there are fancy, cool items, and a few more affordable things. If that's what you're after, you'll probably enjoy this thrift store. I guess I'm still stuck in the past, when it was truly affordable and had a wider range of items. When it really felt like a thrift store. Now, whenever I go there, I leave with nothing. I don't think it'll ever be like it was before, and while I truly hope that the new business model works well for them, since their mission is important, I can't see myself stopping by anymore.

We saw a beautiful vintage ski boot bag in the window and thought it was worth a try to IG message them to see if they were in town. Surprisingly the owner replied back super fast and said she'd meet me in 10 minutes! The owners were on their way out to grand junction to pick up goodies for their store and were happy to turn around to let us in. We shopped around really quickly and ended up only grabbing the ski boot bag. Here's the thing I think they do a beautiful job curating and shopping for her store products. They have a theme and quality that they look for and it's very clear. She shared that they often drive all around the state, four corners area, and Wyoming to estate sales to get these items. She was even able to tell me where she found the bag! That is why you pay a "higher" price for her store. Our bag was $45 and for something so unique I think it was fairly priced. Love love this store. I'll definitely be back each time when we are in Durango. What a sweet couple!
