Spring Cottage Truro is a listed 17th Century cottage with three double guest rooms, all en suite with showers, and WiFi, just outside the village of Probus, between St Austell and Truro.
The property is located down a tiny lane, off the B3275 road from Indian Queens to the A390. It's a convenient stop-over for departures or arrivals from Newquay airport, but also close to the gardens at the Eden Project, Heligan and Trewithen. The area around the cottage has, appropriately, been imaginatively planted by the owners.
Accommodation is provided in 3 doubles, all of which are characterful yet modern. Our bed was super-comfortable with crisp white bed linen. The en-suites have nice touches like underfloor heating and lovely toiletries, and fluffy white towels.
The rooms are on the small side (reflecting the age of the building - the walls are two feet thick) but perfect for a short stay. There's a small guest lounge with chairs and beverages.
But the stand-out feature is the hospitality and food. We were greeted with fresh tea and cakes, and a very warm welcome by host, Chris.
The breakfast was the best I've ever had in a B&B: as well as the usual cereals, toast and conserves, the table had a lovely decoration of fresh sliced pineapple, berries and grapes, and freshly ground coffee made with locally roasted beans.
Cooked offerings are made to order (you're asked to put in your request and breakfast time the night before) and use locally sourced ingredients as far as possible.
The choice includes a full English (or a veggie alternative); home made blueberry pancakes; homemade American pancakes with bacon and maple syrup; scrambled eggs with salmon on an English muffin; or a healthy fruit "thickie" with oats and yoghurt. They'll also do anything to order within reason (so I had poached eggs on toast with mushrooms one morning).
The only downside is that the road into the village of Probus runs behind the garden, so there is some traffic noise. That said, they provide earplugs for light sleepers, and there's little traffic late at night (and it didn't stop us or the other guests sleeping well).
Practicalities: they provide very detailed instructions on how to find the cottage. There's gravel parking for three guest cars.
The village of Probus, 20 minutes' walk away via a nice country footpath (or a two minute drive), has a pub which does food, an Indian restaurant, a couple of small but useful supermarkets, a cafe and a Chinese takeaway. Usefully, there's also a petrol station.
