    Hole #1

The no profile people complain about the greens fees, golf is an expensive sport kiddo so that being the overshadowing premise of low stars -- you'll never find true golf love and I'm sorry for your loss. I felt the fresh youngish history in the air, mountain golf just around the southern base of Harriman State Park. That's a one hour drive for mua, Triboro Bridge, Major Deegan Expressway and three podunk tolls, a lot of NYC Easter Sunday aggravation to commit to. But hear ye well -- "Totally worth it."!! Ask I walked across the practice green, clad in sanguine red polo pants, I considered all the puttts I'd have out there and scoped out a few angles taking mental notes. Most important note -- stay below the hole --. The wind blowing through the trees was swirling, I couldn't determine the prevailing direction of them which all seemed to do their swirling sweeps thirty to fifty feet above. I continued mapping out my strategy, planning my assault after bloodying my hands at the practice range. Most part 4s playing in the just under 400 yard range, wind freshening with the elevations, fairways wide enough to play aggressively, which is what I do and did and hit some beautiful towering hooks into rear flags. That was A-Glenn, then D minus Glenn took my clubs and wanted to play a little also and I watched him hit balls of wicked pull hooks 15 yards right, and slash yank pushes a few -- the other way, but scrambled desperately bumping n chipping n flipping a few in tight but for the life of me I couldn't buy a putt. Conditions were absolutely perfect, soft receptive greens, lush well manacured fairways, fluffy sand and trees without leaves, it's a great time of the year -- so go out there and play..!

Course seems to be falling apart. New management seems to just play along with regulars onl. It's a shame. At least the food is good!

While this members only club is extremely hard to get admitted to, should you ever have to opportunity to play here, DO NOT PASS IT UP. For fairness to the guest who allowed me to play along with the other members privacy, I wont divulge the names of known members or the annual fees for the club, but I can say that you wont find your average middle class worker as a member here. You pull your car up to the valet who will unload your golf bag for you then head to the very elaborate wood finished locker rooms where an attendant will see to it that your things are taken care of. You can grab a bite to eat or a drink in the dining room or explore the pro shop. By the time you walk outside, golfcarts are waiting with your bags already in the back. At this point you can go hit the club supplied balls on their range, or practice your chipping or putting at their designated locations. The course itself is extremely well kept. Player or their caddys seem to do an excellent job of replacing ball marks and divots. The fairways and greens were well maintained and this was by far the greenest course I have ever played on. Tons of ravines and bunkers make the play challenging, yet a memorable experience. I loved the added touch of the coolers filled with water on many of the holes. The best part about private clubs are there are never crowds of people waiting for their tee-times. We were the only ones on the course for most of the day and one of 3 groups in the clubhouse. After our round, a hot shower in the locker-room that is well stocked with necessary as well as many additional and unexpected toiletries did the trick before heading back to the dining room for an early dinner. The food was as expected excellent. I was a tad hesitant to try anything with grilled chicken since most grilled chicken dishes I have are usually dry and lack taste. However, upon the insistent request of my friend I have the Peter Luger Chicken Wrap a try. Ladies and gentleman, it is official. I have found the perfect chicken wrap. I can only tell you the wrap involved grilled chicken, peppers, onions, and it was marinated with heaven. I would probably get this wrap every day if I could. So whenever, you folks at Manhattan Wood's invite me to become a member for free, I think I will probably cover the annual fee just by purchasing a ton of these chicken wraps. I walked out the front door to find my car up front, my bag loaded in the trunk, and my shoes having the best cleaning they have had since I first got them. I really hope to be back soon.

Preakness Hills is an absolutely beautiful country club that we came to for a wedding (rehearsal…read moredinner actually) this summer. Even the hedges, entry gate, and valet spot were beautiful. The rehearsal dinner was held in the outdoor clubhouse (not sure what else to call it) near the pool as well as around the pool. The bar was stocked with top-shelf liquor while well-adorned tables dotted the space. Across from the bar were a number of food stations - sushi, noodles, Peking duck quesadillas, the list goes on. Near the pool were two large grills, one making various kebabs and chicken (it didn't seem to be the most popular among the guests) while the other was serving up sliders and pulled pork. It was seriously the best wedding food I've ever had in my life. I've been to a number of weddings and rehearsal dinners at coveted event spaces with highly-regarded caterers, and the food here was just top-notch. The weather fortunately held up because the quasi-outdoor space would've been a bit more crowded to mingle in had it been raining. Speeches were given with a beautiful sunset in the background (the audio system worked perfectly). We obviously didn't get a chance to check out the golf course, but at first glance (from the driveway) it looked very nice. IF, emphasis on if, I ever get married, this is exactly the type of space I'd like for my rehearsal dinner to be at.

Fairways were nice and well kept. Trees are medium to large and do come into play. The elevation can throw off distances, so when playing a higher elevation green, club up for sure. Rough is ok unless to go for it in which case you run the chance of get ur clubhead snagged. Greens are tough...Seems the groundskeeper was having a bad morning but everything was on a slope it seemed. Still did better than the two regulars who were paired up with me. One thing that did get me was how humid it was...It wrecked havoc on my grip and I had to be conscious of it. Pro-shop like all the courses I have been to in NJ and border NY have no ball markers for sale. However, the gent at the shop gave a sample one since he heard I was visiting from CA. That was class of him for sure. Love the course and layout. I played Pines and Lake side which confused my golf app but 85 everywhere is 85. Highly recommend...Not sure why a lot of golfers in the area grade so harshly on their courses...As I have mentioned to others I have golfed with in the area. Your municipal courses are like amour high end courses from a groundskeeping standpoint. Plus most of the people I have played so far in the Northern NJ border NY we're ok at best 20-30+ hdcpers and are the last people who should review any course. Now if you are mid to single digit handicapper this is a must golf if you are in the area and highly recommended if you are looking for a challenging course.
