Buyer Beware! Warranty vs. Third Party Insurance…read more Hey all, review time for Dave's Appliance and 'Excelsior Guardian Angel Service Plan.' (AKA - Phoenix AMD and AKA - SOS Warranty Services Inc.) In the spring of 2020 my husband and I decided to purchase a high end front loading washing machine. We wanted to support local and decided to purchase from Dave's Appliance in Saint John, NB. For peace of mind we also purchased a 5 year combined total service plan (repair or replace). Actual definition of a warranty: a written guarantee, issued to the purchaser of an article by its manufacturer, promising to repair or replace it if necessary within a specified period of time. Now, just to put things in perspective, we purchased an Air Fryer from Canadian Tire. Eleven months later, it broke. Warranty (replace or repair). The sales representative at Canadian Tire replaced the air fryer and gave out a new 1 year warranty to cover the new air fryer. Car insurance - if you've ever had a claim, they authorize the repair or they give the insured the payout. Two entirely different things. Which does the following sound like? Warranty or third party insurance? We used the machine for approximately 3 1/2 years. Then it broke. We put in for a service call. That went great. Next day service. Repair man said, should be replaced. We tried coordinating with the woman at Dave's Appliance service department. Found she was indifferent, lazy, no follow up to let us know how our claim was progressing. We had to ask for the 1-800 number so we could call the 'warranty' company and see what was what. It gets better! Dave's Appliance sales representative dropped the bomb of full disclosure on us. They (warranty people) are not going to just give you a new washing machine. They'll do a buy out price for what it's worth and that's an in store-credit. HUH???? The 'warranty' people decide what Dave's Appliance will be paid for our defective washing machine. The $ amount becomes our in-store credit that must be spent Dave's Appliance. The sales representative's take it or leave it, this is how it is attitude, was obnoxious! It gets even better! We had also been calling the 'Warranty' people. (They have three names depending on who we called or which receipt we were looking at. We know they all spewed repair or replace. Nope!) First, very different answers in every direction from each person we spoke to. Major red flag! Second, it was finally admitted to us (and I had to drag it out of her), that this was actually third party insurance from a company with no affiliation with any manufacturer of appliances whatsoever. It's like car insurance. They approve an amount for repair or write the appliance off. (In our case, washing machine was 3 1/2 years old but parts not available. Write off. Unbelievable. Plus it took over 3 weeks of back and forth to get a decision.) Third, the warranty people have a signed contract with Dave's Appliance and several other retailers. As per their signed agreement, Dave's Appliance has sole discretion if the credit from our defective washing machine can be transferred to a different retailer. We can't replace out defective washing machine anywhere but Dave's Appliance. It gets better again! Being given no choice, we used our in-store credit to purchase a washing machine for $100 less than our defective machine. Think we got the balance of the insurance payout? Nope! Service gal played with the numbers to cover the cost the delivery. Hinted she did us a favour. Not true! Translated, she grabbed another $60 for team Dave's Appliance! Guess what, it got better! Since they 'replaced' our defective washing machine with an in-store credit, the 5 year warranty we originally purchased is now null and void. We were asked if we wanted to purchase a new 'warranty plan'. I don't think so!!! What an absolute disgraceful scam! We try to support local businesses but we are done with Dave's Appliance and 'Excelsior Guardian Angel Service Plan.' (AKA - Phoenix AMD and AKA - SOS Warranty Services Inc.) Third party insurance masquerading as an appliance warranty. From this review, we hope to get the message out - buyer beware! If a retailer, large or small, tries to sell you an 'extended warranty', ask a lot of questions starting with the obvious - is the warranty company directly affiliated with any appliance manufacturer??? Challenge the retailer to call it what it is, ... warranty affiliated with a manufacturer or third party call centre insurance. And, if they're selling insurance, insist on knowing who gets the buy out money! Regards, Debbie and Ernie P.S. Unfortunately I have to give it a 1 star review minimum, otherwise it would be a 1/2 star rating

I purchased a washer at Dave's about 3 years ago and a plastic gear wore out ($50 part). The…read moretechnician came out and changed it on Nov 16th ($167) A few days ago the same thing happened to the washer as the clothes would not spin the water out. When my husband took out the part today (Feb 23rd), I got him to take a picture and I went in to Dave's Appliance after work. Brenda said she could "fudge the date" for warranty but I had to pay a repairman to install it or I could not get a replacement. That makes no sense. I would be paying more for the repair than the part and I would have to wait days for a repairman to become available. I asked Brenda if this was worth a bad review and she asked me if I was serious. So here is my review. I will be ordering this part online and most likely need to change it every 3 months. I did ask the gentleman in sales if there was an owner I could talk to and he told me that he was not allowed to give out that information and I would have to deal with Brenda. So this 1 star is for you Brenda and to Dave's Appliance for poor customer service and retention. Perhaps the owners - Karen and Grant Nielson should stand behind their online advertisin At Dave's Appliance, we take pride in offering customer service and satisfaction, not just at the point of sale, but with after-sale service as well. Drop by to meet our team today My advice - don't bother. Lisa Dixon, Rothesay, NB
