I've been using a smaller studio to work on a writing project and I could not be happier! The piano was beautiful and sounded great. The studio was also equipped with a nice amp, electric piano (MIDI compatible), and full drum set. A full band could actually rehearse there. A door to one of the large studios was left open and so I was able to see inside and it was huge -- I imagined it would be the perfect place to rehearse a large show or hold dance auditions. It's literally a 20-25 minute express train ride from 42nd street, the location/neighborhood looks safe and clean, and there are stores and restaurants within one or two blocks. Definitely I look forward to working here again. Thank you Chris and RWS Studios for creating this great creative space.

Kaufman Aatoria Studios (KAS) is a film studio in Queens, NY. Created in 1920, Paramount Pictures…read moreoriginated here & numerous Silent & Sound Films have been produced. Sesame Street has been produced here for decades, along w/ other favorites including The Bourne Legacy, Succession, The Flight Attendant, American Horror Story, etc. Many good movies, tV shows, etc. have been produced at KAS. KAS has 500,000 square feet of sound stage as well as production offices, stages, and a backlot. The "NY On Location - Behind the Scenes Production" Event was held at KAS on 9/15/24. This event was a collaborative effort via Kaufman Astoria Studios, Museum of the Moving Image (MoMI), etc. Highlights During the Event: Celebrity Trailers - where they stay during downtime in-between filming. The trailers were beautiful - living / dining room areas, w/ bathroom / shower areas & a bedroom. Grip, Canera & Prop Trucks - Prop Specialists discussed all kinds of cool props that they may have to find, purchase, and create for shows / films. In one prop truck , there was plastic ice, police -themed props, etc. Prop "Bomb Tubes" & prop "Blood Rig Kits" as well as types of other fascinating props were in these trucks. A Prop Specialist explained that he is currently working on a Netflix Series & talked about the process around sometimes having to get props for lots of "extras" that may be in a tv show / movie scene. So Cool! Hair & Makeup Trailers - Prosthetics, wigs, hair pieces, make-up, etc. were there to view. There was a movie / film makeup artist who explained this being her career for years. She described her humble beginnings doing makeup on Broadway, as well as her process for creating makeup for characters on different tv shows & film scenes. Movie / Film Hair Stylists did live demos on people and explained their hairstyling process for creating a "bald head" as well as steps to style hair a specific way before putting wigs on actors/ actresses. Special Effects that created artificial inclement weather. The snow looked so real! Their were also camera cars w/ visual equipment attached that are used for "car" scenes as well as for "high-speed" chase scenes. So Dope! Museum of the Moving Image (MoMI) gave visitors a general admission discount during the event. Food was available for purchase w/ in MoMI's Cafe located on the 1st floor. All in all, it was a cool event as it gave us an opportunity to get an inside, behind the scenes look on the various things that need to come together to create shows & films. Despite claims the staff made about technicians routinely servicing their pianos, this instrument was not in tune and had not been reguated so the action had what piano technicians call "lost motion," which means there is space between the end of keys and the moving parts of the action. This creates a sloppy feeling in the keys, and thus a sub-standard playing experience. Lost motion is easily corrected and this lasts for a long time so either the cause is poor technician skill or the Michiko does not pay enough to maintain this instrument. Sound from other nearby rehearsal studios was a distraction.

The collective had arranged for one of the larger rooms so they could have some audience members, the full company and be able to stream it online as it happened. Spatially speaking they had a reasonable stage that held everyone involved. A full four piece band, some singers and some traditional Japanese instrument players and a grand piano. To the other side of the room was the soundboard and a setup of chairs. They had about 20 or so chairs to sit in and the audience would be a mix of invited friends, the media and the other members of the collective. Overall a nice group. The sound in this room was wonderful and you heard everything nice and clear and it was quite enjoyable. The space itself was clean and had a number of bathrooms and a WiFi signal to login to. I asked the friendly staffer what else the venue had and they said there were numerous smaller rooms like phone booths almost that people use to practice singing only or their voiceover and podcast work. Good idea. While I don't know if I will ever be there again I enjoyed my time here and thing the talented people who are reading this Yelp should look into the place in case it serves their needs.
