I could not have had asked for better Sunday. I was with two GREAT people who took me to their MAN spa yesterday for a day of pampering. This man spa is called "Spiff" which is located on 46th street right off Lexington Avenue. It has been a while since I have had a straight razor on my head and face. So, let me take you through my experience of heaven for that day. We were all greeted by a lovely host as we entered. We were offered something to drink and eat. The following: water (regular/sparkling) coffee, espresso, wine (red/white), stiff drinks, sandwiches, and pastries that are on the counter top of the bar. This is offered throughout your time at Spiff. They have a large flat screen TV showing the game. Instead of having TV's all over the place, they had projector at each barber chair showing the game on the mirror. They took our coats and gave out smock to cover ourselves and were then escorted to the barber chair. Here we go......the young lady started off with a hot towel on my head, then fragrance oil, another hot towel again, shaving cream and she began to go to work. While getting my head shaved, the manicurist was giving me a manicure at the same time. With all of this going on, I definitely went into a relaxing state of mind. I received a head massage and after that another young lady gave me a scalp massage. Let me tell you that after all of that, I was like a kid in a candy store. My head and face was smoother then a baby's bottom and my nails were buffed with a shine. Spiff offers various packages but my friends became members and their package is the "Classic Service" which gets you a haircut, manicure and shoeshine. They also do pedicures, massages, facials and more. By the time you add up your hair cuts and if you pampering yourself throughout the year, you would find that you pay a great deal. So I was actually lucky enough to get in on their opening promo - a free haircut, manicure and shoe shine (normally $58). Since my standard is a $12 haircut at some random barber shop, I figured this was worth the try. Walking in, you'll notice that the place is very trendy -- Club-like music over the speakers, TVs behind the glass so you can both look at yourself and watch ESPN, and jars of candy up front. It seemed like half lounge/half gentleman's club (as all the ladies were quite attractive), but alas, it seems that they are all about hair. Perhaps it would have been nice if they had brought me a martini or something to my chair during my haircut... As much as I balked at the price, i'll have to admit that I got a pretty good haircut. My hairstylist was very personable and gave me a few tips on ways to style my hair when I go out. I'm still not sure the purpose of a manicure, but the massage that came with it was very calming. I'm not sure how many of the stylists are new vs. experienced, but I did overhear someone who seemed like she was learning how to shave someone for the first time. I'm going to hope that type of training isn't an on-the-job kind of thing. All in all, it was a fun experience. I'm unsure if I can dish out the $58 for another haircut, but if I did, i'd most likely be going to Spiff. I can't believe I was missing out on this elite experience for so long. For long, I have been the guy that goes to neighborhood barber to get a cheap haircut every month. Spiff is more than a haircut but an experience. As you walk in, every employee at spiff makes an extra effort to make you feel comfortable and go the extra mile for your happiness. Feel free to use the iPad while you wait or get a drink on the house. Danny the owner is very knowledgeable about haircuts. I personally go to Michelle but all the stylists are great here. This is the place where guys can go together for a haircut and just chill at the bar before a night out. Ask for the hot towel to relax after the shampoo. Each station is equipped with personal LCD screens to watch ESPN. To me haircut was like an errand. But this place adds fun that you want to go hangout while you try to look your best. No one ever pushes you to buy products or tip them which goes to work culture and experience one can expect at spiff. Mens haircut is 50 bucks and the classic with shoe shine, manicure s 61 plus tip. Haircut might seem steep but it's minimal for a royal treatment to boost a man's ego, make him look good and leave him happy after couple of drinks! read more

My best friend had a shave there, raved about it, and I was able to book a deluxe shave for my boyfriend by their lead stylist, Danny. I sat in on the service to satisfy my own curiosity of "what exactly IS a deluxe shave?" (I had a mental image of Sweeney Todd). The East side salon wasn't actually ON 3rd Ave, it's off to the side on 46th street. The place's decor is very clean and sleek, with flat screens everywhere (literally everywhere - even behind the mirrors! very cool!) playing ESPN, news channels, and movies. The front desk receptionist took our coats, and we were offered a vast array of beverages as they're stocked with an espresso bar and mineral water. Danny sat us down in front of one of the cool mirror-LCD TVs (I took advantage of a cappuccino), and promptly started on the treatment. The brochure described the Deluxe Shave as an "old fashioned straight razor shave with e-Shave products, relaxing rest facial and scalp treatment by master barber". The service backed up the brochure description 120%, if not more. Danny was very professional, my boyfriend was a bit nervous when he first sat down (this is his first "real" shave) - but in Danny's chair, he was comfortable and at ease within minutes. The treatment itself is actually a combination of a very thorough shave, and a mini-facial. Hot towels were placed on the skin at intervals to open pores and make the beard follicles stand up, and the lather-and-shave process was done three times (the friend who referred us to Spiff said that after his appointment, he didn't have to shave for a full week). There was no skimping on products, the post-shave moisturizer smelled great! Danny explained that since my boyfriend has very sensitive skin, there was a bit of redness on the neck area after the shave, but it should go away in a few hours. We went to see Iron Man afterwards (AWESOME MOVIE, GO SEE IT!!!!), and by the time we left the theater, the redness was completely gone. On the price of the service: it's $45 plus tax, and 10-15% gratuity. I personally think it is a bargain for a 30-minute service, and my basis for comparison is my usual 30-minute facial at a high-end spa ($65 plus tax). At Spiff, you get the same level of professionalism and products as any high-end place in the city, with services designed especially for men. There was no pushy product sales, and everything just felt very easy and un-stuffy (as some "old boys' club" men's salons are). I'm already recommending all the guys I know to their amazing shaves! We didn't have the time to try out their hair services, but they have a great haircut/manicure/shoeshine package (the "Spiff Classic") for $58. Another great deal, for another time. I have been here about 10 times in the past 6 months. A previous co-worker referred me here. Gotta say ... not a single bad experience. And the décor and staff (Danny, Kristin, and Ronaldo) really make a place like this truly great. Free drinks are a plus to. Your crowd consists mostly of finance/corporate guys in their 30s with the occasional 20 something (me). I had my best haircut experience to date with my visit to SPIFF for men. From the moment I entered, the level of service was far above what I had expected - from the complimentary drink to the hot towel I was consistently impressed. I am not usually one to pay for such amenities, but I thought the price was reasonable for the haircut alone and the extras just made my day. I have longer (but not long) curly/wavy hair and I had been apprehensive about finding a stylist in NYC. I was afraid I would get either someone who only knew crew cuts or someone who would do something too trendy or high maintenance. Kathleen understood exactly what I was after and did a spectacular job. She also showed me a new way to style my hair (still using the haircut I wanted) and introduced me to a new type of product. I had an amazing experience here. I have lived in NYC for about 15 years on and off and I have never been able to find a reliable haircut except with Lisa Lobue in Brooklyn. However her hours changed and I need someone in the city. The moment you walk into Spiff they really do make you feel like you're about to have a luxury experience. Always tough to judge a place based on how it looks immediately after you leave, so this will probably go up to 5 or down to 3 in a couple of weeks, but the initial reaction is positive. I've got to take a somewhat unexpected business trip this week and was looking like the Geico caveman, so I needed to get a cut before leaving. My regular place was booked up, so I figured I'd try Spiff as I've been wanting to check out one of the local manspas ever since I went to Spargo in SF (when you remember a haircut a year and a half later, you know it's good). $50 for a haircut seemed a little expensive, but my girlfriend convinced me to treat myself. I agreed, as long as she agreed to come with me... We got there and they offered us drinks. I got a Pellegrino and she had a cappuccino. Got a nice wash and scalp massage, then sat down and was asked what I wanted. Explained it kind of vaguely, but Matt (I think that was his name) got it. He suggested a little texturization so it grows back straighter and doesn't curl when it gets longer. I told him to give it a shot...it came out ok. The straight razor shave on the neck is an excellent touch, as it feels infinitely better than the electric buzzer most places use. The post-cut rinse was nice too, as I didn't feel like I had to shower immediately after getting home. They have a decent selection of products, but didn't try to sell me anything. Matt asked what I usually use and when I told him, he said that looked like it was working fine. GF's initial reaction was positive, but she said it didn't look much better than my regular, cheaper place. We left, and as we were walking, she took a closer look and changed her mind - said it looked great. She loved the uneven-ness (is that a word?). Told me it looked professional, but not uptight like the other place did, and said it looked like it took time to do rather than somebody just running clippers over my head. She even suggested I sign up for a membership so I can go more frequently for clean-ups. To be clear, you don't go to spiff for the amazing quality of the hair cut you're going to get, nor for an amazing manicure or shoe shine. You go to spiff for the experience as a whole. Don't get me wrong, the cuts are not bad, in fact they're good, probably comparable to the barber you went to for 20 years, but it's not a fair comparison, he's know you and your style for 20 years to top it off you're in and out that chair in 10 mins and you're luck if he used anything but clippers on you. So let's stop the inadequate comparison and really look at what they offer. You walk in and it's all about the service, they take your coat, put a robe or whatever the barber equivalent is called and offer you a drink. You're going to head to get a wash, then a hot towel and quick shoulder rub. At this point you'll get your cut and manicure if you're getting one. Then back to the wash for a rinse and then the styling. All in all you'll be there about 45 mins. My cons: It's not something that will be an issue for everyone, for me when I go there it's peaceful and I want to be relaxing. You unfortunately will end up with some stylist who feel like they must socialize. I get that it's a hard read but I haven't gone enough to know anyone there yet and when I'm sitting there with my eyes closed just do your thing and let me be. That's really it, otherwise there's not much to complain about. Again, none of their services by themselves are high class, the thing that is is everything together. read more

This review is strictly for the haircut and the conversation between the stylist and I. Before I move on to that, I must say the ambience is a very unique and comforting one. The staff is nice, inviting and truly does make sure you're comfortable. From the robe, to the free drinks, to the TVs, iPads, and all, it's a great looking place. Now on to the haircut itself. I came in asking for a pretty simple style. Without getting into detail, I basically had been growing out my hair for 2 months just so that when I do go to a stylist (because I usually get a $20-$30 haircut), they can have lots to work with. After our conversation, I was convinced the stylist and I were on the same page.....however the first cut that was made basically cut 75% of the length of my hair. Well there goes the "lots to work with" I mentioned. The stylist completely disregarded our conversation and when I spoke up about how that is too short, they simply replied "oh what you want won't work, this is the best look for you" and carried on. Now I'm no expert at cutting/styling hair, and if this "professional" really does believe that the style I want isn't possible, then perhaps tell me first before you go cutting off SO much of my hair. I even told the stylist that I've been growing it out just so I can see what it can possibly look like when you're done styling it. If that style isn't going to happen, then perhaps we can talk about something else. I'm paying $60 for haircut and with tip, it's comes out to $75. If I'm paying that much for a haircut, at least I'd like to know WHAT you're doing to it. They say the stylist has a "consultation" with you. Well my experience was that the stylist pretended to listen to what I asked, and then went on and did something completely different. I also asked the stylist to trim my beard down and to blend it in with my sideburns. Terrible job. I had to go home and re-do it to look decent. My only concern is that Spiff markets itself as a Men's only salon. If you have stylists that cannot properly trim a beard (which I think only men have?), then I'm sorry, don't advertise yourself as that. I can understand if I went into a normal salon where trimming/blending beards aren't too common, but as a Men's Only Specific Salon....I just ask to please train your stylists so they can cover all bases of Men's hair and grooming. My point is, the place is great for the atmosphere and the non-stylist service. However, my haircut experience was an abomination and needless to say, I wasted $75 of my money. Based on other reviews ot this place, it seems like MOST guys have a good to great experience here and maybe I was unlucky. But that's no excuse for a stylist to completely disregard the "consultation" and just cut away willy nilly. They just need to make sure the stylists actually care about the person they're cutting hair for and to attempt to get on the same page so there's no surprises. And better training on beards please! Other than that, like I said....staff is great, ambience is great. I probably wouldn't go back, but I think most guys should try it out as long as they aren't unlucky like me. read more

I went to the lower Manhattan shop in September and had a very nice experience so I was more than happy to go back. As I work in the building I dropped in to make an appointment. There were no customers there at the time but I was informed someone was soon coming for a scheduled appointment and they were booked up for the rest of the day. No problem. I scheduled an appointment for the next day at 2:30. An hour before my scheduled appointment I got a call to tell me they were running late and asked if I can push back my appointment to 3:00. At 3:00 I came down and was told nobody was there to cut hair and asked if I could come back at 3:30. I returned at 3:30 to be told the stylist was still not there but they were expecting her any minute. I waited in the shop for 15 minutes and finally left. There are too many stylists in Manhattan to accept this treatment. read more

Was pretty skeptical paying $60 for a haircut vs. my typical $20... but after experiencing Spiff it was definitely worth it. Extremely comfortable environment, everyone is super friendly, clean & trendy atmosphere. Free drinks at the bar, a full shampoo/condition before and rinse after the cut, attentive, friendly stylists that don't seem rushed... all-in-all it makes getting a cut something to look forward to and truly enjoy, as opposed to just another errand to do. The best way to enjoy and get value out of this gem of a man spa is to buy a half year or yearly membership. Not only do you get a great cut, but the hot towel alone is worth the experience, Whatever you need in the grooming department - they do it. And with style, class & experience, Diane and Carlos are the best cutters (stylists) on the east side. Danny Kerr runs the establishment to perfection. Most will enjoy the ambience, cool place and free drinks including soda, coffee, espresso and alcohol. If you need a mani or pedi or an exotic ear waxing - Daphne is one of the best. They give massages, coloring and wash and blow out or whatever you call it. Ashley will meet you at the door and give you a shine while you're waiting. Keep your shoes on - or your feet will smell like polish. Just trying to be cute. All the girls are more than cute and Carllos and the guys are wonderful too. Got a great shave and my eyebrows tamed. I went in just for brows as it was close to closing time, and they offered to check if anyone wanted to stay late for the shave. No up charge for the shave. The lady who did my eyebrows was amazing. I actually fell asleep during the process. Which is crazy, right? I mean, waxing and plucking typically hurts. The shave was excellent as well. Tl;Dr: The staff I encountered tonight didn't understand English at all and cut off more of the hair that i'll probably never get back. FML - I went to this place for maybe my 5th time tonight. Before I went, I happened to be browsing the reviews for the place (while seeking the phone number to call an appointment in) and saw one which mentioned how his stylist didnt speak english. Unfortunately, that's the one I got tonight and I will never, ever go back to this place. At the prices they charge, they can afford to hire stylists who are at least conversational in english, if not fluent. The guy was probably decent, but unfortunately for me he misinterpreted "I'd like to part my hair, but don't put a line going down the side of my head" for "Line? no problem, can do" and starts cutting right away. he also cut way too much off up front because he misinterpreted the style i want. After it was far too late, he finally gave up trying to communicate verbally and handed me the comb. As I get wiser and older, my hair is becoming more and more of a precious commodity and this dude totally ruined it tonight. I left a tip and didn't say anything to be polite and get out of there but that guy who left that review was spot on. This place can be the ABSOLUTE WORST haircut you've ever received. Even the people at Supercuts are conversational in English. For the $115 I paid, I cannot believe I walked out looking like that. I had my hair cut/styled in Vegas the previous month and the woman did an amazing job sight unseen and gave me a trendy look for less. This is in a 5* Vegas resort and casino. For less! Even the other times I've been, the package I purchased was supposed to come with a shoe shine, but the shoe shine was not available, or they forgot about my manicure and I had to stick around longer. This place has good service. The haircuts are terrible. Thats why I gave it 1 star. The rationale is that you go to get a good haircut more than to have a cute girl say hi at the damn counter. This place is the salon type of haircutting. See below. I have come to realize that there are 2 types of male haircutters. You have the salon type who are good with the sissors. This is good because you can get a variety of different hairstyles. However, the downside is that they are not great in the fundemental barber skills. Those that are good with fundemental barber skills tend to work in old schoolbarber shops. These skills are tapering, clean symmetric lines, even sideburns, fades, and a variety of other things. I beleive that the best barber/hairstylist is someon who has had both experience in male salon and barber settings. To this date I have not found this person. If there is someone out there who has this skill please call me. I will pay $100 for the haircut. I ended up hating the haircut so much I went to another place to get it fixed. They also screwed it up a little. However, it was better than the SPIFF do I had. I have come up with the winning formula for a great haircut. Go to a male salon to get the hairstyled the way you like it. Tell the stylist not to touch the back or the sideburns at all. They are likely to give you uneven sideburns and crooked lines that will make the haircut look unfinished, make your head look uneven, and just not give a clean appearance. After you get the haircut you should go to the barber that you know is good with the clippers and the t blade. Tell him to trim the sideburns and line up the back. If you dont like a defined line in the back ask them for a tapered nape. I prefer that. This will take time, but will likely result in the best possible haircut.The other possiblity is to grow your hair out or shave your head. After going to 12 high rated barber/stylist from Yelp I have realized that Yelp offers minimal help in finding a great person who can cut your hair. I think I am done with Yelp for a while. It has not offered any help with my search in finding the best barber. I am growing my hair out. I will see what happens after that. read more

An undeniably unique Manhattan experience if you like the finer things of life...This place a is great guy's refuge that keeps you looking sharp. I personally ask for Jasmine for my haircut and Anna if getting a manicure or pedicure. I'm pretty picky and they are both very detail oriented and friendly. I don't think you'll regret it. After one mediocre haircut, I decided to give Spiff another try. Next time, I will go to Supercuts for a better haircut at 1/3 the price. Both times I found the staff to have an attitude problem. The woman who cut my hair was either in a rush or on drugs (or both). I asked for a very slight trim and she went at it like Edward Scissorhands. Did not listen, did not give a damn. Singing along to the music and having a good time chatting with her girlfriends. Not what one would expect for $70. Next time I will take my business downtown to 18/8, where the staff is professional, the facility is clean, and the haircut is worth $70. read more

After my first and only experience, I will NEVER go back to this place. I went in for a beard trim and to have the back of my neck cleaned up. The stylist did a rushed, sloppy job, leaving the hairs uneven and the lines crooked. Update - I've been to Spiffs 4 times now and have been able to get a better sense of the service. I enjoy the service; however, the shop lacks consistency as each time is a bit different. I get the $80 service which is haircut, manicure and shoe shine. Of the four times I've been to Spiffs, my shoes were only shined one time...the first time. The hair wash and massage is different each time. Sometimes it is really good and other times it is rushed. The coordination between staff is spotty. During my most recent haircut, the staff was all out of sorts. I spent way too much time in between services and it even felt like they forgot about me at times. I will say that my haircut has been great 3 out of 4 times. In closing when the service is like below, you feel like the service came at a bargain...but you don't know if you will get that service or not which is a problem. I highly recommend spending an hour at this place to get cleaned-up. I purchased the haircut, manicure and shoe shine package for $80 and thought it was definitely worth the money. The customer service was out of this world and the coordination between each of the services was fluid. I'm actually considering the purchase of the membership. Waste of time! I was thinking about changing groomers and decided to give SPIFF a try. After setting up an appointment a week in advance, I walked from my office to SPIFF. At first the woman at the front desk couldn't find my name. After saying it again and spelling it, she found me. I arrived on time (actually 5 minutes early) but was informed that another client showed up 30 min late and if i could come back 2 1/2 hours later. here we are. i joined. best decision of 2010. my last review is somewhat disingenuous because i was writing more about the hairstylist than i was about the venue/experience. this place is incredible. the owner is very involved in the day-to-day operations which means that the service eclipses its contemporaries (aka john allen). ive been a member for almost 7 months and i fully intend to renew for a full year. beyond being experienced, courteous and skilled, the entire staff is incredibly fun. client or not, these people go all out for you. its easily the best men's club in manhattan. i go once or twice a month and i look forward to it. read more

I was pleasantly impressed with Spiff. I went on a Saturday and was surprised that it was not a crowed as one would expect. It could be that it's in Midtown East and businesses are closed. The salon is trendy as far as most male salons go, but the staff is very friendly which works in their favor, they offered espresso and other drinks. If you ever wanted a manicure/pedicure but were afraid to get one, well this is the place to do it in. It's a good idea on the part of the owners. In fact I received a pedicure and haircut. While it might be more than the $12 dollar haircut, the price they charge is really not that bad. I'm going back, I guess they have a repeat customer. read more

The one start only goes for the guy who offered me water with a lemon in it. Otherwise my experience has been a total failure. I literally started writing this review as I was waiting for facial appointment. It was supposed to be on 6:45 PM and I have waited for 45 minutes. Every 15 minutes an apologetic girl kept telling me that the specialist needs another 5 to 10 minutes because she has a massage. I blame myself for waiting all that long rather than blaming that irresponsible service. I gathered from my time waiting there that there were many men who were spending their time between haircuts, pedicures, chatting with the workers there and lounging while having drinks. In other words they clearly looked like the clientele that had time to waste. I finally decided to cancel when no one decided to show up after 50 minutes of waiting. They didn't even offer to reschedule. I have been there a couple of times and I consider myself a generous customer who gets out of his way to write a great review when a place deserves it. read more

Love this place. Staff is amazing. I have gotten haircuts, shoeshines, pedicures, and manicures from here. Bought a 6 month membership about 3 weeks ago and have started coming here about once a week for various services. Alcohol is obviously a huge plus as well. I have nothing but amazing things to say about the staff and level of service offered here. Give it a shot and you'll realize that the price is worth the Spiff experience. read more
