So I searched up authentic Chinese places in B'ham's Chinatown to find one that had plenty of veggie items and found this place. The place is on the second floor close to many other Chinese places. The interior is quite large, with bare bones decor. They had plenty of items that are or could be vegetarian, so we stuck with those items. We got: -Ma po tofu (vegan version; £8.80). This was very well-done, with a nicely spicy fermented bean paste and chili oil character. Not so much if any Szechuan peppercorns -- oh well. One of the better ma po tofu dishes I've had in a long while. 5/5 -Morning glory with garlic (£9.80). You can't get this dish in North America to my knowledge, so we were excited to order this: perfectly cooked water spinach with a good amount of garlic. Doesn't get better than this. 5/5 -Sliced potato with chili Chinese pepper (£7.80). Classic dish cooked perfectly, with a sort of hot & sour tang. We were really happy with this one as well. 5/5 -Marinated cold cucumber in garlic sauce (£7.80). This could've done with chili oil but the garlic sauce and cilantro that it was flavoured with made this very satisfying. 4.5/5 Service was also top-notch, speaking good English and helping us make sure that everything would be vegetarian, indeed vegan. Top-notch authentic Chinese food experience here and can be very veg-friendly. Highly recommended.

Oh I guess even if you never lived in China you'll probably realize that something is up. Simply stated, I think that a great way to check if a restaurant is authentic is if you are the only person there who does not come from the country where the food is from... This restaurant brings heavy Szechuan influence to its dishes and the main focus is hot pot and open face grill. Hot pot is a meal where you get a soup pot full of broth (normal or spicy) and then you add the meats and veggies you want to be cooked in the pot. It gets better and better as you cook more stuff.... Well if you cook good stuff and pick the right combos. They provide each table with individual hot plaques built into the table's surface at each place and a grill in the middle where you can grill some shrimp or thinly sliced beef or lamb. They have a buffet deal for all you can eat hot pot and grill ingredients for about 16£ and although it might not inspire the untrained eye - the selection of meats and veggies (and sauces) is just like what you would have in China. I also have tried several other dishes and I highly recommend the dumplings, the eggplant (the best I have found in the UK), and the spicy "Han" noodles (with a cucumber, garlic, and chili sauce - again not for the faint of taste bud). Don't forget a pot of tea to wash it down and cool off from the spices! The staff are super friendly and are happy to exchange in Chinese if you know a few words :) I love this spot and will be coming back for more soon!

Somehow I had the impression that serving multiple cuisines would dilute the quantity but the Chinese menu here is pretty focused on Sichuan and has a lot of the classics e.g. my favourite fried chicken with chilli. For once though I skipped that and shared gong bao chicken, aubergine with pork, braised pork and beef with noodles. All were excellent and I would get them again and recommend. My friend got some kind of beef ribs as a takeaway and phoned from his train to report how good they were. Service was very prompt. We were told it would be 20 minutes for the braised pork. It was 20 minutes. We didn't sample the Korean BBQ but it's properly set up with the pans in the tables, so no doubt will be fun to try at least! I shall no doubt be back as much as possible before I depart!

Red n Hot is placed in the heart of Birmingham's Chinatown which, like much of the centre of the city, is dominated by high rise office blocks, flyovers and busy lanes of traffic and bustle. Food The starters were delicious. Cucumber with soy, chilli oil and garlic . . . lots of garlic. Delicious and the perfect pairing to the fried fish we had also ordered. The portions were large. The main courses arrived, and the portions were even larger! Szechuan Beef (with chilli, chinese lettuce and oodles of garlic) was lovely, a really warming savoury dish. We also had chicken with peanuts, chilli, basil, ginger and spring onions. A side serving of Chinese lettuce with vinegar provided vegetable fibre. Lots of plain rice was on offer to mop up the delicious sauces. The portions defeated us completely as the dishes were cleared away we were told that this was the way Red n Hot did things . . . might have been nice to hear that on ordering rather than waste food. No matter, we were happy. This was food you could imagine a few hundred million people happily eating with no ill effects. Toilets shocking doesn't even come close. I'll spare you the details. There are some sights even hardened Qypers will not want described . . . . an effort at tidying had merely 'spread' the problem everywhere, ahem. The Bill a healthy £53.50 with drinks (4 bottles of Tsingtao beer). The bill was delivered folded . . . we were asked if we wanted to add a tip . . . why?, we asked it's in the service charge already isn't it? (this we knew having unfolded the bill). A huffy response was all we got and we couldn't be disposed of fast enough. Come on guys, you already had 10% on top. The sour note struck by the bill and the unspeakably gross toilets did Red n Hot no favours. A pity, the food is worth going for. I gather Red n Hot has branch in Manchester and one in London too. I'd be interested to compare the London branch with the Brum one. Disabled access isn't available. Tables are accessed up several steps as are the aforementioned toilets of shame.

A chinese…read morerestaurant called Mayfair has existed on this site for many years, and was the first chinese that my mother visited back in the 60s, and I have been visiting it for at least 20 years. In this age of all-you-can-eat chinese buffets, Mayfair makes a refreshing change (because it isn't one, as most new Nottingham chinese restaurants seem to be). Firstly, the decor is no-frills. Clean and simple. The place has a very informal atmosphere. They are not licensed, so you can take your own alcohol, which automatically makes for a cheaper bill. There are plenty of off-licenses nearby, so this system works fine. The menu is fairly standard chinese fodder, with a few unusual dishes thrown in for good measure. Occassionally there will also be an additional 'specials' menu, where new and more unusual dishes appear. The food is always good quality, and always arrives hot. Portions are generous, and Mike the manager is very helpful and friendly. I have recommended this place to many people, who have in turn recommended it to all and sundry. Pricewise, Mayfair represents fantastic value. I often go with friends, and we all have a soup to start along with some other mixed starters to share (ribs etc), and then we all have a main course with rice or noodles. When the bill comes, it seldom works out at more than £11 per head. It gets very busy on Friday and Saturday night, so book ahead to avoid disappointment. I love the friendly, informal, unpretentious nature of the place. Great to visit with friends, and they can cater for large groups if needed to. I probably would not recommend it if you fancy a romantic and intimate night out, or if you value decor above food and value. The only reason I can't bring myself to give this place 5 stars is because the speed of service can suffer somewhat at peak times, but for me it is always worth the wait. My recommendations? The king prawn and sweetcorn soup (although i've been told the hot and sour soup is exceptional), the salt and pepper spare ribs (dry, but spicy and delicious), and the squid in szechuan sauce. If you live in Nottingham and love chinese food but haven't tried Mayfair, where have you been?!

It was set about 15-min from the A6 but wow was it worth the detour! They have a massive menu with foods from all over east Asia. We decided to share a starter of salt & pepper short ribs. The husb opted for Singapore noodles (his favorite) and I was going to order spicy combination noodle soup but was recommended to try the Spicy Tom Yum Noodle Soup the was on the specials board. I love tom yum so it was a no-brainer to take the recommendation. The short ribs were delicious. Perfectly fried so they were crispy on the outside and tender on the inside and they were covered in a delectable salt, pepper, garlic, and onion topping. (chef's kiss) The Singapore Noodles were a healthy portion and OMG the meat was SO TENDER. Sorry for yelling, but I needed to make sure everyone understood. Sometimes meat can be overcooked slightly and a little chewy, but they have perfected the art of meat here! The Spicy Tom Yum Noodle Soup was brimming with ingredients and was massive! The combination is their house mix of meats and seafood. Again, the meat was INCREDIBLY TENDER! The seafood was plentiful and also cooked to perfection. I was able to stop myself from stuffing it all into my face so I could wrap up a third of it for future me. I found both dishes to be decently spicy and the server let me know that both were level 1 spicy so I'll definitely kick it up a notch next time I'm back. I think the husb will happily stay at level 1 . The chefs come from Hong Kong and we gave our compliments to the chef over the short wall separating the kitchen from the dining area. This place is now a must-stop for us when we drive from London to the North and it should be for you too!

Asian fusion? Chinese crossed with Japanese and a side of vietnamese?…read more It's a bit hard to pin point the exact origins making up Wofon, but that's what makes it such an exciting treat. There are three steps when ordering -- choosing your noodles (or rice), topping and sauce. Noodles vary from the traditional Japanese ramen (wheat noodles), Udon (thicker wheat noodles), or perhaps a classic Chiense Dan Meen (egg wheat noodles). The toppings selection varies with Wofon special (selection of meats, prawn, roast pork), mixed seafood, or roast duck, for example. And lastly, the sauces. Selection can be Chinese Szechuan spicy, curry, or Japanese teriyaki. What I love about Wofon (aside from their amazing cheap prices) is that there is such a plethora of selection choices. You can order soup noodles one day, mixing noodles another, mixing rice, or wok fried rice. The selections are completely endless! I also strongly recommend the spare ribs with barbecued sauce as a starter. And the banana with vanilla ice cream as a dessert. And for £2.50, you can't beat the price. Enjoy!
