Miserable experience - condition of my room was horrible when i moved in and the property was poorly maintained during my tenancy. The worst thing for me is that despite cleaning and reporting ware and tare (which was there when i moved in) at the end of my tenancy they kept my deposit, charged me so many additional cleaning/repair costs and constantly made legal threats months after I moved out. If i could give 0 stars I would. Happily left my flat mate and I in a house COVERED in thick black mould and repeatedly blamed us for causing it. The whole bathroom ceiling and walls were covered in it, and it was in both of our bedrooms causing us to get so ill. I ended up in hospital due to the black mould as I have a weak immune system. Yasir who is the manager still didn't care one bit, and just carried on blaming us. They entered our flat multiple times without letting us know, one of the times I was in the shower and didn't know who had just come into my flat. Vile customer service, awful awful people who want to rip students off. Tried to charge us £150 at the end of the tenancy for DUST on the skirting board. Absolute joke of a company, Yasir to be exact. They record a video of the property at the end of the year showing how the place has been left, and completely contradicted themselves when trying to charge us for something that they said in the video was fine. Terrible customer service and will rip students off. Staff are impolite and difficult to communicate with. They will also make up charges on your deposit statement and refuse to refund you when you leave. Took over 6 months to resolve our deposit. Avoid completely. read more

Despicable company run by incompetent fools. Several occasions of strange workmen being in my house (including my bedroom) without my knowledge or permission. Landlord refused to change the locks despite telling him I felt unsafe knowing these people had had access to our keys. Email notifications consistently sent to misspelled email addresses, meaning we often didn't know when work was being done at the house. My housemate was told more than once that the rent had not been paid when bank records clearly showed it had. They once called to say they 'forgot' to set up direct debits that month, so the date the rent was due would have to change. We were all pressured to sign forms to back up their nominations for the landlord awards. They even posted them through the letterbox after we had already completed them and called to check that we had done it. Repairs were never prioritised. After asking repeatedly for them to fix our heating one winter, they admitted 'we thought it didn't matter and you'd all have gone home for Christmas'. I reported a window which wouldn't shut and warned them I was going away and it needed to be done before then. They promised it would be, but of course it wasn't. Came home from holiday - window was still wide open. 2 months later the window was 'fixed'. Fixed closed - which was a major fire hazard and they employed lazy contractors who left shattered glass all over my bedroom floor. To top it all off, there were ridiculous and unjustified deductions from our deposits. Don't waste your time or money with these idiots, they have no clue what they're doing and no consideration for their tenants. read more

Absolutely awful, avoid like the plague. The property my boyfriend rented in Bingley was not maintained despite several complaints by a number of residents. Blatant breaches of health and safety (no outside light and I nearly broke my ankle on several occasions). Broken guttering and lots of damp. Workmen simply allowed into the flat without any prior authorisation, and when my boyfriend called up to complain he was told to 'Fxxx' off (and I quote). Fire alarms were never tested despite notices to the contrary. Very obstructive and non-communicative when it comes to sending deposits back. read more

Joke of a company. They really live up to the reputation that estate agents have and would recommend avoiding.

I lived in the property for two years, at first it was nice however a large patch of mould appeared in the middle of the kitchen ceiling. When I rang up to ask for help as I suspected there was a leak I was condescendingly told it was condensation. After several calls we finally got someone out to inspect who then siliconed up the bathroom and said we were good to go. Couple months later water starts dripping from that patch every time we shower, several more calls and several more visits and no fix. We were left with buckets in our kitchen until one day the ceiling collapsed. After a month they put up some plasterboard due to us ringing to complain about the state of the kitchen before yet another leak to sprung. The leak flooded our kitchen floor, someone came out said "that's a leak" and left without turning off the water supply or anything so of course we racked up a sizeable water bill since it was left leaking overnight. Cue second larger collapse of ceiling which we were left with for over six months. Appalling living standards. Due to the problems we had dealing with them someone from my university came out to inspect the property to find the reason we were so cold in the house is because there was absolutely no insulation. He did a full report which I sent in to Spencer properties. Nothing was done with it and I had to call and complain about the insulation to finally get that fitted to then have a maintenance guy swearing about having to do it. On that topic we had one maintenance guy swear at us and get in our faces when they just turned up without anyone telling us and we refused to let him in the property. This is just the highlights, I would go into the detail of everything that went wrong but I think the highlights are enough to describe the experience. Just rent with anyone else read more

Don't use this company they will send you the form to refund your deposit and then not pay it back to you. It does not matter how many times you contact them or provide them with proof of bills on the flat paid - they hold onto the money as long as they can. I have been told by someone who worked for them that they pocket the money - knowing that students are moving away from the area. I will be writing to Students Union and Watchdog about my complaint and hope it will trigger others to come forward and stop them doing this. read more

This estate agents is a complete disgrace and shouldn't be allowed to continue. I first thought they seemed like a nice, family run business which respect all students but how WRONG I was. The customer service is shocking. The people at Spencer Properties are some of the most rude and disrespectful individuals that I have ever met. The year we stayed with them was the worst one throughout university and 6 months after leaving the property we are still battling with Spencer over the deposit money. They have continued to try and rip us off throwing in random costs like an £80 cleaning bill for 'cobwebs' - when the flat was spotless, a hell of a lot more clean then it was when we first arrived in September! After agreeing to the cleaning costs, they kept delaying the payment of the deposit by lying about not receiving certain forms, which were sent three times and had actually been signed for by Spencer, due to checking the tracking service on Royal Mail. After confronting them about this, they eventually agreed to send us the deposit money. From which we thought was an end to a long and tiresome battle, we received the cheques with the wrong amount and we were actually short of £130. We are now seeking legal advice as we feel we have been treated disgustingly and it has made my final year at university extremely stressful. I urge you to avoid Spencer Properties and go with someone who actually cares about their tenants. read more

The staff at Spencer Properties are the most helpful and considerate landlords that i have stayed with. The property, Flat 5, 1 Norwood Terrace, was the cleanest and most well kept property of any i have seen. Any issue i had with my property, the Spencer's team were attentive and very professional. I would highly recommend going to view their properties and getting a tenacy with them. read more
