This is a gem of an urban campground. It was recommended to us by our camp neighbor the night before in North Dakota. We only had time to spend one night there but could easily have spent longer. read more

Camping spots too close together... We were glad to be here when the campground was pretty open but because we reserved online we ended up right next to two other campers when there were lots of open spots. The creek right next to our spot was cool! And we did have some trees for shade. The second night was a Friday night and the campers kept rolling in. Two spaces down from us was a group of young people drinking from a big spirits bottle and falling on the ground and yelling at each other at midnight... arg... They like nature? read more

It's an okay campground, as far as facilities are concerned. Bathrooms and showers are fine. It's strange to be in a big open field and choose your own spit, even though we made a reservation. I would look elsewhere in the area for other campground options. read more

We canceled our reservation at Spearfish City Campground four days in advance but were not issued a refund for the Sturgis days of our trip. Staff later explained that during Sturgis Rally week, cancellations are non-refundable per a policy listed on the Spearfish.gov website. However, despite being directed to it, I was unable to locate this policy even after searching thoroughly. We also never received a booking confirmation email, which is unusual based on our months of RV travel experience. The website generally states that cancellations made by 11 AM on the day of arrival are fully refundable, which added to our confusion. This review is a caution to others: cancellation terms specific to events like the Sturgis Rally are not clearly or prominently communicated, and that lack of transparency proved costly $240, in our case. They earn two stars because someone did return our call. read more

The most beautiful place we've ever camped. The creek running alongside the primitive sites is magical. Staff was amazing, showers and bathrooms are super clean, fresh drinking water available. Very well kept, private road off the beaten path. We hate to leave!!! read more

My husband and I camped here for one night. The campground was very nice, quiet, and well maintained. The bathrooms were very clean. There were paths to walk or bike throughout the campground. There was a free fish hatchery in walking distance. The staff was very friendly. We picked our site upon check-in and got a nice site next to the super clear creek. read more

Lovely campground and surrounding area. We had a late arrival time (after the office was closed) and weren't sure what to do. The side of the office had boxes with our vehicle stickers, welcome packet, and a map with our spot circled and the route to it highlighted. They made it so easy for us! The grounds were immaculate and there were plenty of restrooms and garbage cans throughout. It was quiet and everyone seemed to be respecting the rules. The dogs loved the walking trail and splashing in the stream near by. HIGHLY RECOMMEND SPEARFISH CAMPGROUND! read more

The area surrounding the campground is just awesome, fish hatchery across the road & a great coffee joint down the street. There's no laundry services at the campground but just a few blocks down there is a laundry mat. Our camp spot was right next to the creek which the dogs loved but even on a hot August day the water was far too cold for us. read more

The first time we stayed here the staff was horrible! They were rude and seemed bothered that we were taking time away from their chat session when we asked questions. We thought we would give it a 2nd try and drove from Custer State Park with our 5th wheel to surprise our college age daughter before heading home. The web site said they were open the 1st week of May ( it was the 8th ).We pulled up and it said "off season camping $10" so we picked a spot and went to plug in. The camper down the way said they hoped we had not already paid because there was NO services, NO electric! The least they could have done was say that there is no services for the $10. So... We called Chris' Campground up the road and the person that answered seemed very nice. We went there and ended up staying longer an planned because of their hospitality. read more

Why have check out be at 11 and don't let people come in until 2? Straight bull, storm coming and they charge extra for coming in before 2pm. Front clerks were rude and unwilling to work with us - will not be back, I'd rather pay more elsewhere than give them my money. read more

The campground itself is fine with decent amenities. The problem is the website let's you think you have a reserved site when they just don't do that. If you reserve a "FULL SERVICES RV site" you get a reserved site, but all other sites are general admission, even though the website tells you that you reserved a specific site. What really made me want to write the review is the shitty attitude the staff gave when I showed them my reservation that said I'd reserved site #19. The guy at the counter was a complete ass and treated both me and my wife disrespectfully and with extreme attitude. When I showed him the reservation form specifying site #19 he said, "Can't you see right there it says UHV. Can't you read. Don't you know what UHV means?! We don't reserve sites!" I have no idea what he meant or what he thought I must know about his world. All I know is he was a complete jerk. It's completely unacceptable how we were treated. I won't stay here again and I'll try to steer anyone I speak to, to try another place. Yes, it was a big event, and I'm sure hundreds of people had the same problem. Nice campsite. Sits next to a beautiful stream and the fish hatchery. Bit pricey for a city campsite and sites are pretty uneven. Be prepared to level your rig. We have a 24 foot motor home. Cost us 45$ a night read more

This a really great park. It is extremely well maintained with a great staff. The sites are fairly level gravel with grass and trees surrounding them. There are easy day trips to Devil's Tower, Deadwood, Mount Rushmore and the still in process Crazy Horse monument, all of which are worth a visit. . read more

Lovely grounds, but we came for night registration at 8:30pm and directions indicated we should park and pay in the morning.. Great except the wifi is password protected and the bathrooms have coded locks which we don't have codes for. Phone number on the office just leads to uninformative voicemail. Bummer! We stayed three nights in June in our pop-up camper in a full-service spot. They weren't spacious -- if you want to be isolated you're in the wrong spot -- but were nice and level. The bathrooms and showers, which are entered only with a passcode, are the nicest in any public or private campground we've seen. My husband and son didn't get a very good wifi signal on their cell phone/kindle, but it was only a little slow on my laptop. Spearfish creek runs along the campground, and the DC Booth Historic Fish Hatchery and Spearfish City Park and it's playground are right next door. read more

This is my view the last 3 mornings I get up. This is a city owned campground and very clean and neat. The showers are hot and it is so peaceful here. Have seen deer on grass every day. Great place for your trailer or even tent camp! Spearfish City Campground rocks! read more

Beware! $20 PER TENT per night. Do not go here with multiple tents or you will be ripped off. Even worse, for that money you get NO HAND SOAP in the restroom. The place is crawling in bacteria because basically nobody is washing their hands when they use the toilet. Only reason this gets 2 instead of 1 stars is the stream running through the site is nice. Make no mistake though, this is a wide-open RV-style site not a rustic wooded campground. read more

This was one of the most wonderful camping experiences that I have had in many years of camping. It is spacious, bucolic, bubbling streams and bridges running all though out, clean modern restrooms, miles of paved and unpaved trails running through the camp ground and surrounding woods, lovely night lighting, friendly staff and lots of happy deer wandering all around. They were especially lovely at night. They seemed to be dancing in the moonlight on the center green. This campground is right next to a playground, historic sights and lots of other interesting things. It really was a mecca....and for only $20. I got turned down by the Spearfish KOA because of my dogs (THAT was a first!) but I am grateful to them for turning us down. We had a great time at the city campground and my pups were mesmerized by the deer and stayed awake most of the night just watching them. read more

We camped as part of a large group. Well kept camp grounds, good facilities, clean and shallow stream runs through the site, great for kids to play in to cool off. Lots of trees for shady flat spots to pitch your tent. RV / camper parking and hook ups too. Group prices were very reasonable for such high quality. read more
