Our home needed a black cat and there was a black cat that needed a home, so I came to meet and adopt him. This is a BIG shelter and the cat and dog areas are at opposite ends of the building. I didn't hear any barking at all! So many cats here, and you can look through glass to the kitten nursery which is in a separate room. Only $10 to adopt (not sure about for dogs) and it's an easy quick process. I was surprised they didn't want to know if I had other cats, or dogs, at home. I guess they assume you have read the information provided (our new furbaby has lived with other cats but never with dogs or children). If you don't have a cat carrier they have cardboard ones for I believe $7. It was a little disconcerting to find out at the "checkout" that my new cat had in fact not yet gotten the rabies combo shot as he'd only been there two weeks and it was scheduled for upcoming. I have no problem just paying for my vet to do it, but if this is a concern you may want to ask them to verify all the tests/shots were done BEFORE you fall in love. These people are supposed to be here to help animals first. And pet owners. But animals. I don't know who managment is since the old retired. But its awful! They don't want any thing to do with the intake of house cats. Indoor cats. Now if they are stray. Ok bring them on...they will spay/neuter the poor thing and throw it back outside at the address you gave them. Yep they're helping with the population alright. I have been told from 3-4 rescues if you get your animal taken in by them and they are a bit sick, older and hard to adopt, or just have to many to deal with. This place takes great care of dogs, and excellent care of cats. You may also find rabbits and guinea pigs in a clean corner room. PS: if I could reply to Bailey D. I'd tell her that I'm sorry your dog had medical issues when you got him, poor pup. As for the dog being aggressive, this happens when you do not properly discipline your dog from the get-go. Every dog will challenge your authority in some way or another, some more than others, and it is key that you know how to properly discipline a dog without hurting or traumatizing it. There is no way that the shelter could have known he was aggressive, he was not feeling well when they had him, and because they're a not-for-profit, they can only do so much! If you want them to be able to take better care of their animals, then DONATE! Do you really think that tiny shelter can afford to give $500+ in medical care to each and every one of its 40+ dogs??? NO! That's completely unreasonable! They survive entirely on donations and their measly $10 and $25 adoption fees to keep running. And of course the dog had more energy after you adopted him! He was feeling much better after he got a more thorough medical treatment! Having a dog is a full-time job, my own dog had similar issues to yours when we first got him, but instead of going on yelp and whining about it, we went to the library, brought him to trainers, and learned how to better handle a high-energy dog! Now, he still takes food when we're not looking, but that's it! He sits when we tell him, stays where he's put, and comes when we call him! He stands at the door when he needs to go out, and he waits patiently for me to get his things. He has not pooped the rug on purpose since the second month we had him, and the only reason he has since is because no one was home when he needed to go and he had diarrhea, poor boy. Really, I think you are not ready for a dog. Next time, do your research before and, if needed, after adopting one! read more

**CAT HAD FLEAS AND TAPEWORMS!!!! Please ask and make sure your informed if the pet your looking at has fleas and tapeworms!!!! Brought home a cat a couple days ago and we just found fleas on her and discovered she had tapeworms as well. If you don't want to deal with any of those extra types of things with your possible new pet please make sure you know before you buy and take them home. Very disappointed to findout the SPCA is not a flea free facility-the hard way. Not very helpful for the pets or the clients for them to have fleas and even tapeworms. But please don't let this completely discourage everyone from taking home a homeless pet, I just know this isn't something everyone is okay with taking upon themselves when it's only for the better of the pet. But definitely something to think about and ask about before you lock in and take them home. read more

I am an animal nerd, and when I see a place that will put an animal down it makes me want to become a hoarder. I've joked about being the smelly cat lady on my block numerous times, except I'd own dogs, ferrets, bunnies and whatever random animal crossed my path.. so I guess I'd really be the smelly "animal" lady instead. However, thankfully I ran across this SPCA and they have curbed my innate desire to save every animal that I happen across. Don't get me wrong, I still save them when I can but I'd be ok with dropping them off at this shelter. I know that they will find a home eventually and they won't be put down if that isn't the case. This place is volunteer based, and everyone I've ever met there has a huge heart. Most of the shelters I've seen in my life care, but don't have nearly as much compassion as the folks out here. For example, they have a dog running around right now named Scooter. Poor Scooter had some not so great owners prior to being turned over to the SPCA. They aren't totally sure what happened to him in his prior life, but he can no longer use his back legs. It's very heartbreaking until you meet him. This dog doesn't let anything stop him. The awesome volunteers at the shelter pooled their funds together and Scooter now has a set of wheels strapped to him and he has free reign once again. That was awesome to see in the first place, but on top of that, Scooter is also getting physical therapy too! They hope that he will eventually make a full recovery. :) He is so spunky and fully of life despite being treated so poorly in his past. The shelter itself is the cleanest I've come across, and they are the most helpful people I've met. I love this place and would recommend you getting a furry friend from here before anyplace else! read more

Wonderful shelter. Cats are only $10 and dogs are $40. Animals come spayed/neutered, micro-chipped, vaccinated, and vet checked. We've adopted two cats from there, and I'll continue to support this wonderful facility! I still frequent SPCA Cincinnati regularly. Keep in mind this facility is 100% non profit, grant and donation dependent. They depend on the handful of employees they have and the countless amazing volunteers that come in daily to walk, exercise, train, and socialize the hundreds of dogs and cats onsite. SPCA Cincinnati is open admissions within Hamilton county, which means they don't turn away the sick, injured, pregnant, aggressive, scared, or breed specific, unlike other shelters/rescues. They see to every medical need they find, they try to socialize every animal that enters their walls. You can easily see how much the staff cares for every animal who has entered their care. You'll see people complain that they have too many pits, or their dog has a behavior issue. What do you expect from an unwanted shelter animal? The types of animals a shelter bears is a direct reflection on the surrounding population and social situation. No dog, cat, or rabbit leaves SPCA without being spayed/neutered. People often expect to walk through the doors and get a perfectly trained, purebred dog. That's not what happens at shelters. Shelters are where the poorly trained and unwanted go, purebred or not. Adopting an animal in need takes time, love, patience, and work to make it a well-trained pet. Ignore the bad reviews on here and understand that the dogs and cats at this facility have hit rock bottom. They can only go up, but with lots of human love and care. read more

What a wonderful organization! To be clear right off the bat - based on our experience there this week, if this were a for-profit place, their rating would be much lower. But they do what they can with what they have, which is more than a lot of us can say. We popped in this past Wednesday "just to look", after a friend advised us of their current special on adoption fees. We left with a precious new addition to our little family. The process wasn't as smooth as it could have been, or as thorough. But it was certainly less complicated than adopting at some other shelters. Be prepared when you go in. Bear in mind that even the most mild-mannered pooch will get a little nuts in those conditions. And remember that while the dogs' living conditions are not necessarily ideal, most of them are probably better off in a kennel than they were before they came to the SPCA. read more

This review is from a few years ago unfortunately, but this shelter should not be trusted. A couple years back my parents and I went out to adopt a dog, we had seen a couple breeders and I had picked out a different dog before my mom recommended taking a look at shelters real quick first. We went to the SPCA and looked around and found this little Pomeranian that I instantly fell in love with. We decided to adopt her and we were informed she had recently been spayed. We took her home and realized then she was incredibly weak and sick. We took her to the vet immediately the next day to find out she had bordetella(kennel cough) so bad it affected her heart and lungs, we were also informed that it was obvious the surgery was preformed while she was sick. We were told that our dog was a mere 1-2 days away from dying and it was going ti be touch and go on wether or not she would make it. We did end up getting her nursed back to health(for the most part) but due to how sick she was when we got her she did have some long lasting health issues that eventually lead to her death last year. I hope since then they have gotten their act together but I would never adopt a pet from there again. These experiences are why people no longer want to adopt from shelters read more

Horrible experience. We had a few kittens living on our porch and we were told to bring them to this shelter to donate. We arrived with the kittens and the woman working the desk was horrible to us. Incredibly rude..I truly cannot believe she was that unhelpful and nasty. Our donations will no longer be going here, we'll be finding a better place to take our donations. read more

I'm only giving this place one star because it won't allow to give zero stars. This place does not test for any parasites on animals obviously because I adopted a cat from here last December and we asked several times if everything was okay with the cat and wanted to make sure we weren't going to be financial stuck with a sick cat. We already have a cat so we especially didn't want our cat to get sick. So the first week is fine when we adopted her and then after the first week she was constantly throwing up and had an inflamed belly and then it kinda stopped and would happen every once and a while. Months later, the throw up gets more frequent and she is throwing up worms all over our apartment. We called them and told them the scenario but in our "contract" they can't do anything to pay for cats medicines after a few weeks. How were we supposed to know you guys gave us a cat infested with worms? So we wanted to take her back b/c we can't afford multiple vet visits but couldn't because we felt bad so we took her to the vet and treated her worms, $200 later for both cats. Months go by and she is okay and no throwing up. Just this past week, she is throwing up worms again and I'm afraid of my other cats health. I don't understand what kind of place let's people adopt infested cats. I am so dumbfounded at this place and I am very upset and they can't do anything so now it's our problem. Do yourself a favor and don't get a cat from here unless you are ready to pay for 5 doctor visits to ensure the animal is okay. It's so sad because I don't want to discourage any animal adoptions because they need homes but this is ridiculous and now I'm stuck with this financial burden of vet visits that we really can't afford and cleaning throw up every other day. I will never ever adopt an animal from this place again. read more

If you get a pet here, they have assigned a number to the kitten or cat and have tracked all of the cats shots and medicines. They'll give you a paper listing of what they have done if they treated the cat when it came in. The paperwork listing the kittens info /number is sometimes on the outside of their cage. Corresponding information regarding the animal is already entered into the computer system when you get there. This is done so that vulnerable younger kittens don't get unnecessary and potentially dangerous double doses of medicines. They will neuter at 2 lbs. and over as long as the kitten is healthy. You sign two forms and there is a small fee. read more

If I could give less stars I would. First of all I put my dog on hold so that I can get the paperwork with my apartment in order, then when I go to get him they were showing him to another family, who wanted to fight me for him. Secondly when I went to get him they made me wait a half an hour so the other family could play with him and they could do heart-worm testing on him. When I got to take him home they had him shaking and begging for me to take him away from there. Turns out that this dog has a ton of medical issues. First I had to get his rabies shot because shelters don't do that and he was severely underweight when I got him. Then I found tapeworms in his stool and found out he also had coccidia, which I would like to add is deadly to dogs if untreated. So at this point I had invested more than $500 in this dog. He was good and mellow for the first couple of weeks, then the real him came out. He became hyper, so I took him on more walks. Then he became even more hyper, so I bought more chew toys. He started to urinate in the floor, so I took him out more often. This dog started spiraling downwards. He has become a monster. He looks at me after I take him out and then either pees or poops on the floor. He has chewed up all of my furniture even though he has plenty of his own toys to chew on. He has attacked me and my boyfriend. The worst part is that they knew that this dog was not safe, they hadn't had him long and they wanted to make him someone else's problem. They didn't care to inform me of his past and the fact that he was aggressive. They failed. I will not be bringing him back here and I will tell anyone that I can to stay away from this specific SPCA shelter. The employees are rude and they don't care to inform you that a dog is aggressive. read more

All I see on this website in the way of dogs for adoption are pit bulls. There used to be much more of a selection to choose from. This makes me not care for the spca much anymore. Who in their right mind would adopt a pit bull? I know there are exceptions and if you are one of the lucky ones who picked a good dog of this breed that is great. I know some of them can be good pets but for the most part you are taking a big risk. Whey are so many people getting rid of them? There must be a reason. It isn't much fun to look at dogs that are all the same breed. read more
