Firstly, it has a cash point attached, which is always welcome, especially in areas like this that could do with a few more. Secondly, it has a post office attached, but it's not just a post office, so you can go there, buy some food and send a letter at the same time, which I find quite exciting. Finally, it sells booze. And nowhere that sells booze can go far wrong. Convenient, cheap and friendly. Lovely McColl's.

Drinks include a fridge-full of sugary pop and also a coffee machine that makes coffee, mocha and hot chocolate. It's really a treat shop, selling the junk food section of a newsagent without the kitchen cupboard essentials. Great if you're in the area and have a bit of a sugar craving, or need a caffeine hit and you're not too picky when it comes to coffee - and for 65p for a large coffee you can't really complain. Due to the size of the shop however, there isn't a great deal of choice so if you can only stomach sea salt and coarse ground black pepper Kettle Chips or Green & Blacks' Maya Gold then you're unlikely to be a fan of Take a Break!

Costcutter is a friendly little shop round the corner from me which sells basic groceries and…read morethings like alcohol and magazines. They open till about 9pm so it's a handy shop for last minutes things which I forgot to buy (or for a cheeky bottle of wine on an evening!) They only downside is you can only pay on your card if you spend a fiver which has stopped me buying things from there on a few occasions when I've just wanted a bottle of water and magazine for instance.

They did not have the item I came in for, but had a reasonable selection in the to-go food and drink, and dairy sections. The store also offers Smartshop, which is handy as it allows you to use your phone to scan and pay for items, skipping the till. 3*

I nipped in here for some basics and was really pleased to find that they sell Clover, a small and very specific point I know, but it seems all other places nearby to me have ceased to sell this most coveted butter brand! I was really pleased. They also have a grand fruit and veg section, though not as wide and fresh as Oakwood fruits, a good selection of handy quick meals, cereals and more. There are also feed 4 for £4 deals, which seems to be their answer to Sainsburys feed your family for a fiver deal, which isn't bad! As well as all this the shop assistant was really sweet and friendly, offering up a bit of harmless banter as I purchased my goods. All in all, a pretty fair place to purchase some goods!

The store has managed to cover most of my emergencies, from desperately needing a sewing kit to cough medicine to a birthday card. There seems to be an awful lot hidden away on the shelves. The food selection isn't bad and it's of the same quality as a big supermarket. They always ID me even though I am approaching 30 but I don't mind as it means you don't have the usual drunken kids hanging out side. What is great is the staff, they are always very helpful, keen to chat and makes buying your tea bags a little bit fun.

It's got plenty of parking, and is also on the numbers 16 and 4 bus routes, you can't miss the place - it's huge! In there I managed to sign up to an extremely cheap phone contract, buy some clothes in the sale, pick up groceries, fill up the car with petrol AND get my eyebrows threaded in the space of about an hour. The phone shop staff are very helpful and friendly, and the deal was cracking (£10 a month for 500 mins, unlimited texts and 2GB data if you're wondering!), as was the lady who threaded my eyebrows for £5, after waiting less than 5 mins (walk up service). Yes it's a big supermarket, so it can be a bit lifeless and miserable inside when it's busy, however if you're in need of something quick there's a good chance this place will have it, and it's open 24 hours!

Shelves are well stocked with a variety of own brand and branded foods, newspapers and magazines, some statinary, household goods and baby items such as nappies and wipes. Don't forget to use your loyalty card to chalk up that shareholder allowance (ok I got nothing for the whole of last year as it was under £2.00 but you never know!). This Co-op also doubles as a paypoint for paying your gas, electricity and phone bills or topping up your meter keys.
