This past weekend I found myself in the Bonn/Cologne area, and the WWII history buff with me had us head to the small town of Remagen to visit the museum of one of the few bridges captured by the Allies in WWII. While there we discovered Sinnfony Piano Bar, tucked away in a small village north of the museum. The building was built in 1781 and is straight out of a movie set for a 1929 version of Heidi. But this rustic exterior camouflages a completely different experience to be had inside. Walking through the door you are immediately exposed to a clean modern space with a marble bar, slick furnishings, smooth LED lighting and a performing stage complete with a black baby grand piano, assortment of horns and guitars, which gives a feel of more San Francisco Cool Wine Bar, rather than rustic Remagen village pub. The food is again modern, European, and fresh and light, as you would expect from the interior. The specialty of the house was flumaken(sp), which I would classify as a French Pizza. We had one with baby green, serrano ham, and parmesan, which was very nice. We also had the lachs plate, which we were told were cured in house and cut as we ordered, which was excellent (NOTE: I love lachs!!!). We drank tap beer, but there was a full bar and a reasonable wine selection. You can tell that this place is screaming to be a "wine bar," but it is still Germany. Anyway, the entertainment was provided by Jens, who played ALL of the instruments we saw when we came in, as well as sings. But the performance wasn't like other piano bars I have been too, as Jens worked the room in between his short three to five song sets (there were a lot of sets). When Jens chatted with us, and found out we were from the states, he sat down and chatted with us in perfect English, but with an accent. That's when we discovered that he owned the bar with his wife, Irma, who is the chef. Anyway, we got a lot of, "This next song goes out to our visitors from America..." for the rest of the night. Jens stopped performing around midnight, and we stayed and chatted with Jens, and eventually, Irma until 2:00am drinking beer, having snacks, and laughing. Contrarily, the food was amazing! This was the first time I had Cuban food for years. The bread for my dish, which resembled a taco, was tender with a nice crisp on the outside. As a huge fan of the sour taste, I appreciate the lemon in my fish and the strong tomato the pork carnitas. Though the lettuce in my salad was slightly wilted, I was blown away by how much I enjoyed the cabbage part of the side salad coupled with a strange whipped mayo-like sauce. I didn't order a drink but my friend claimed her strawberry margarita was much stronger than usual. Great if that's your preference.

Nothing notably bad or good. The food was also pretty underwhelming. The flavors didn't really remind me of Cuban or Hispanic food. Like, it was fine. It wasn't terrible, it wasn't great. It wasn't very Cuban. I also tried the sangria, and this was also just good. I'm not sure if they had cinnamon or some other spices but it definitely didn't jump out at me. Vineria da Angelo is a small, cozy and "hidden" Italian restaurant in Poppelsdorf with a lovely…read moreterrace. In my experience there, even though the staff has always been nice and friendly, the service has always been very slow. It takes almost half an hour for them to serve drinks. I even witnessed a young couple leaving as no one actually paid attention to them on a Friday night. Moreover, the drinks such as beer, which are supposed to be cold, are often served warm or "not cold enough". In terms of food, mini-bruschettas served at the beginning taste really good and signal you are going to eat high quality food here. I really like beef carpaccio and mushroom-filled raviolis. Also, wine selection is quite rich. Still, I believe the portions a little small compared to prices. I would say that overall Vineria de Angelo is a nice place to eat good quality Italian food yet its slow service and bad price/performance ratio render the place "just another Italian restaurant" in Bonn. Even though I believe it is the best Italian restaurant in Poppelsdorf, it is good for a casual lunch and dinner, but not for special days.

We were very disappointed and honestly still very hungry even though we ordered the 8 tapa plates each. We were given 3 tiny pieces of chicken and 3 tiny shrimps for two of the plates. The olives were literally from a can. No flavor whatsoever. It cost around 15€ per person. The staff was friendly but not sure how this place is so highly rated and full. Maybe for the drinks. Wouldn't go back.
