First rate campground, just off the Blue Ridge Parkway. I made reservations in advance, knowing how popular October is for fall colors. The reservation process was easy. I received a confirmation email, with directions (follow them closely, as it would be very easy to miss the unmarked road). When we arrived, we were escorted to our campsite, which was large, level and fairly secluded. The grounds and facilities are fairly clean and well kept. The only concern was a pack of four dogs who roamed the campground in the morning. They were on the picnic tables and a bit of a nuisance. I mentioned them to the owner. She's aware but apparently not getting support from local authorities, sadly. I'd still recommend this stop as you're exploring the Blue Ridge Parkway.

I was shocked to see that Bear Den only has 3 stars, then I realized that it is due to older post prior to the new owners. This place was PERFECT!! My husband and I stayed for 3 nights. Not one single complaint. Staff is extremely helpful and friendly. Plenty of privacy between sites. We will be returning every year with our grandchildren and making it a tradition... THANK YOU BEAR DEN FOR A PERFECT GET AWAY!

We were in campsite A2.

Very beautiful. Everyone was extremely nice and helpful. The maintenance crew were on point. We will definitely be making another trip here.

As seasonal workamper I think that I can give a honest review on this campground. I love it here. We are tucked away in a beautiful wooded location, on the Blue Ridge Parkway, surrounded by the Pisgah National Forest. This makes a great basecamp for all the area natural attractions like, waterfalls, caverns and on site hiking trails. As a receptionist here I asked each guest how their visit was. Always I am given positive feedback. This Sunday, a guest told me that this has to be the best campground in North Carolina. I can honestly say it is, you will love it here. We'll be back next summer again.

Walking/riding path near the pond.

Great family campground. Camp store has a little bit of everything and the staff are nice and helpful. Bathrooms were kept clean but showers do need small repairs. (They worked, just were kind of run down) perfectly located on the BRP. I would call ahead before booking to make sure the spot you are looking at will accommodate you. (Some spots were larger than others, some would only fit cars or small vehicles) The workers will help make sure it's the best choice for you!

Plenty of peaceful things to do

Great family environment and super staff! I would hope that they can upgrade their boathouses soon. Not bad but they have a lot of age to them. They should also change the listed "lake" to the title of pond. We had the best weekend there and their staff are A+! I would like to check out one of their nice looking cabins next time but this time we had a perfect place to tent camp.

This was a great find with their access road from the Blue Ridge Parkway. We were happily surprised with how quiet the place was and it is very clean. Each site is fairly private and we enjoyed every minute. We were two be there for only one night but stayed for two.

We found Cross Creek Cabins quite by accident about 10 years ago. Our first visit to Fishing Bear…read morewas dreamy... the cabin with so very cozy with stuffed teddy bears sitting on every shelf and in every nook and cranny, a nicely set dining room table, comfy chairs, a kitchen fully stocked with every imaginable utensil, coffee maker, microwave, piles of fresh towels and pillows, a trunk full of extra snuggly blankets, a shelf full of cards and games, a fire pit and grill outside and lots of quiet, woodsy privacy. Our latest visit just a few months ago was just as special: the Fishing Bear cabin did not disappoint. It was just as quaint and cozy as we remembered it. The property has expanded over the years to include a beautiful little pond fed by a creek which is truly meditative in the morning mist, picnic tables, and by the owner's home, a barn with the sweetest ponies (and a mule!) that you'll ever meet. Cross Creek Cabins is right off the Blue Ridge Parkway and conveniently located near the Linville Caverns, Linville Falls, Grandfather Mountain, Blowing Rock and Tweetsie Railroad. Along the windy road of 221, you'll find some curious little gift shops and mercantiles! Boone is under 30 minutes away. There are several other cabins available on the property, I believe most of the accommodate larger groups. The owners are professional and courteous. At the time, they did not offer wifi, and our little hotspot had a hard time trying to catch a signal... but after all, you're in the mountains to relax, right? :) We've tried other cabins managed by rental companies but there is something special about Cross Creek. This place is our mountain getaway of choice!

We stayed at Oak Tree Cottage. When we arrived there was a large ladder extending from the ground…read moreto the roof line. The owner asked me to keep my Grandson away from it and that someone would be coming to get it. It extended across the deck, so I was a little concerned he might try to climb it. During our stay he turned around to leave the deck and forgot it was there and bumped his head on it. We walked around it all weekend. No one ever came to remove it. Also, there are electric wall heaters in all the bedrooms and living room as well as a propane fueled fireplace in the living room. There are no smoke detectors or carbon monoxide detectors in the entire cabin. The area is beautiful. There was plenty of utensils and linens. The cabin was very clean. If you don't mind the owner's lack of concern for your safety, it's a nice place to stay.

This place used to be really nice. As of this year I think we've had what will be our last stay…read more Overcrowding: The campground has added way too many tent sites without adequate parking. The result is 0 parking spots and no space for anyone to comfortably enjoy themselves. The fire pits all blow smoke at each other and the tents fill up with other tent sites fire pit smoke. Noise issues: Want to go to sleep at a reasonable time? Too bad. Two nights in a row a bunch of drunkards were blasting music and having a great time from 9pm until 3am. Don't plan on getting much sleep if it's a busy weekend. Barking dogs, screaming kids, loud music, and noisy people well into the night. Safety concerns: the main small beach near the domes where everyone plays is littered with boulders and sharp rocks in the water. Maybe nothing can be done about that. However open inspecting the rotting wood steps leading to the water I found an actual sharp-to-a-point metal spike sticking straight up out of the wood. Luckily I was able to hammer down with a large rock, however that was an impaled foot or worse waiting to happen. There's lots of exposed rebar and it's generally unsafe. Considering how many kids and drunk adults loiter in that area, it's only a matter of time until someone needs stitches. No wonder they have you sign a liability waiver to be here. Lack of facility maintenance: The door locks on most of the bathrooms don't work. The hot water in the showers is barely functional if at all. The wood ramp to the shipping container showers becomes very slippery when wet and poses a safety hazard. There's a wasp sanctuary under the deck as well. Several adults and children were stung this weekend simply walking up the ramp to the bathrooms. With all the money this place is making is there no time to fix and maintain these things? Last but not least, THE CAMP DOGS: a gentleman came to our group and asked that we put all our dogs on leashes (despite them already being on leashes at the time...) and then allows the "camp dog" which is a large black and white husky to roam freely. This dog is an A**HOLE. It constantly bothers people's camp sites and tries to pick fights with other dogs. Our dogs were personally harassed by this dog when he came to our campsite and started eating our dogs food. Then tried to start a fight with our dogs. Then tried to BITE MY WIFE. I had to chase him off every couple hours both days. This dog should not be allowed off leash however the campground owners don't have enough self awareness to do so. All in all, it's been fun over the last few years, but this place has grown too big for the owners and staff to properly manage. Won't likely be coming here again, and we'll be sure to let everyone know what it's become.

We prefer the river sites personally for the views & fishing. The campground owners are fantastic people who've become friends. They live on site and take great pride in the property. The property is always impeccable. They are always working. Such a gorgeous place!! The pond is in the center of the property - yes you can fish (catch & release). Areas setup with hammocks, corn hole, seating, etc. The new playground has been a big hit! Oh, and there's also a dog park area. The bathhouses are super clean and have air conditioning. The laundry room is brand new with great units and also A/C. They incorporated additional activities this year over at the pavilion which our family has loved! Bingo, tie-dye t-shirts, food trucks, live music, and more! Our grandson loves to join us. Lots of kids and a great area for them to all play. Tubing the river is always a fun treat! You can bring your own tubes or rent from the campground. The camp store has expanded and features a great mix of items - t-shirts, hats, hoodies, koozies, and more. As well as local jams, rubs, and other treats. They're in the process of building a new office/camp store so we're excited to see this complete. We have a 40' fifth wheel. No problems every getting in. They accommodate all size rigs. All sites have a concrete pad, fire pit and very nice large picnic table. Sites are spacious and do not feel cramped like we've experienced at other campgrounds. Wi-Fi is generally pretty good. We've been able to work remote on some of our trips. We even had phone service our last trip (AT&T)! Lots to do in the area! Hiking, Linville Winery (yum!), Linville Caverns, Grandfather Mtn and so many other great places. The office staff can certainly provide plenty of recommendations, too. There are 2 grocery stores in town about 15min away. There's also a local dollar store about 5min away. We cannot say enough good things about MRFC. We've met some great campers there who we now call friends. We truly love this place and already have bookings for next year!
