Our family of 6 counting our fur babies were looking to get away from the everyday hustle and bustle of everyday life - several years ago a friend recommended Bear Den Campground Well to say the my family is campers would not be a true statement intact at this point my teenagers don't really like going outside BUT this campground provides many options for your visit including houses, cabins, cleared areas for tenting, as well as RV setups. We decided to go with the primitive cabin and it was perfect for our family. Our site included our cabin and a fire pit area. When arriving the little store was adorable and included everything you could possible think of that you may have forgotten or souvenirs galore that you never knew you needed. Campground included a neat game building with old school arcade machines, rented out golf carts, and had a large fishing and swimming pond. It was the perfect weekend getaway to take you back in time - even my teenagers enjoyed! We will be visiting again!

I was shocked to see that Bear Den only has 3 stars, then I realized that it is due to older post prior to the new owners. This place was PERFECT!! My husband and I stayed for 3 nights. Not one single complaint. Staff is extremely helpful and friendly. Plenty of privacy between sites. We will be returning every year with our grandchildren and making it a tradition... THANK YOU BEAR DEN FOR A PERFECT GET AWAY!

    We were in campsite A2.

Very beautiful. Everyone was extremely nice and helpful. The maintenance crew were on point. We will definitely be making another trip here.

As seasonal workamper I think that I can give a honest review on this campground. I love it here. We are tucked away in a beautiful wooded location, on the Blue Ridge Parkway, surrounded by the Pisgah National Forest. This makes a great basecamp for all the area natural attractions like, waterfalls, caverns and on site hiking trails. As a receptionist here I asked each guest how their visit was. Always I am given positive feedback. This Sunday, a guest told me that this has to be the best campground in North Carolina. I can honestly say it is, you will love it here. We'll be back next summer again.

    Walking/riding path near the pond.

Great family campground. Camp store has a little bit of everything and the staff are nice and helpful. Bathrooms were kept clean but showers do need small repairs. (They worked, just were kind of run down) perfectly located on the BRP. I would call ahead before booking to make sure the spot you are looking at will accommodate you. (Some spots were larger than others, some would only fit cars or small vehicles) The workers will help make sure it's the best choice for you!

Plenty of peaceful things to do

Great family environment and super staff! I would hope that they can upgrade their boathouses soon. Not bad but they have a lot of age to them. They should also change the listed "lake" to the title of pond. We had the best weekend there and their staff are A+! I would like to check out one of their nice looking cabins next time but this time we had a perfect place to tent camp.

This was a great find with their access road from the Blue Ridge Parkway. We were happily surprised with how quiet the place was and it is very clean. Each site is fairly private and we enjoyed every minute. We were two be there for only one night but stayed for two.

We prefer the river sites personally for the views & fishing. The campground owners are fantastic people who've become friends. They live on site and take great pride in the property. The property is always impeccable. They are always working. Such a gorgeous place!! The pond is in the center of the property - yes you can fish (catch & release). Areas setup with hammocks, corn hole, seating, etc. The new playground has been a big hit! Oh, and there's also a dog park area. The bathhouses are super clean and have air conditioning. The laundry room is brand new with great units and also A/C. They incorporated additional activities this year over at the pavilion which our family has loved! Bingo, tie-dye t-shirts, food trucks, live music, and more! Our grandson loves to join us. Lots of kids and a great area for them to all play. Tubing the river is always a fun treat! You can bring your own tubes or rent from the campground. The camp store has expanded and features a great mix of items - t-shirts, hats, hoodies, koozies, and more. As well as local jams, rubs, and other treats. They're in the process of building a new office/camp store so we're excited to see this complete. We have a 40' fifth wheel. No problems every getting in. They accommodate all size rigs. All sites have a concrete pad, fire pit and very nice large picnic table. Sites are spacious and do not feel cramped like we've experienced at other campgrounds. Wi-Fi is generally pretty good. We've been able to work remote on some of our trips. We even had phone service our last trip (AT&T)! Lots to do in the area! Hiking, Linville Winery (yum!), Linville Caverns, Grandfather Mtn and so many other great places. The office staff can certainly provide plenty of recommendations, too. There are 2 grocery stores in town about 15min away. There's also a local dollar store about 5min away. We cannot say enough good things about MRFC. We've met some great campers there who we now call friends. We truly love this place and already have bookings for next year!

It was the high capacity (50 ppl and 10 cars), with flush toilets, shelters, and no outright policy against alcohol that sold me on the cradle of forestry campground, Briar Bottom located in the Black Mountain Campground. We camped one night at Red Oak. We had booked for two but, sometimes when you camp at the tail if the season (end of October) in the shadows of Mount Mitchell you aren't guaranteed the prettiest of weather. Getting here on those mountain roads was quite the adventure. Bring printed directions as you're going to loose cell service the closer you get. If you're headed to the group camp just turn into the camp ground, and proceed left. You'll go for quite a way but once you've reached the ford you're pretty much there. Yep, you've got to cross a creek running down the mountain side. It's tile bottomed so there's not too much to worry about. There were 8 of us that camped and it was pretty much a cold downpour (36 degrees) from when we arrived so it was a huge bonus that all the sites have shelters with space to put together tents, and put on those rainflys before staking them down. Having two picnic tables were great because they were under the shelters too. All in all I'll totally come back when I'm visiting my home state and I need a beautiful place to camp at a reasonable cost.

I stayed here several nights. I saw no one, even though I arrived during office hours. The…read moreself-check-in process is pretty easy, pick a campsite, fill out the form, paper clip your cash to it and put it in the box. However, this campsite has some serious issues. There is one bathroom, which has one toilet, just one. And this is for about a dozen campsites. Likewise, there is just one shower. At least the shower can be accessed separately while someone is on the toilet. While the bathroom was clean when I arrived, it was never cleaned nor the trash emptied during my stay. Fortunately it was just me staying there (and now I know why) so it was just my dirt I suppose, but I would have at least appreciated someone sweeping it out. While some of the campsites are not too unappealing, others are not desirable at all. They are accessed from a one-way road with nowhere to pull over to let someone pass. I even had to clear a sizable limb from the road just to be able to enter the tent camping sites. In fact, I thought no one lived on site from the lack of maintenance and lack of anyone around, but it appears they actually live in the house where the bathroom is. Yes, and the bathroom is a bit of a hike from the campsites, down a badly scalloped steep gravel road (which tested my vehicle's traction control driving in). There is neither water nor trash bin at the campsites, although I did see a water pipe laying on the ground, disconnected. The only trash bin is in the bathroom, which could get pretty nasty filling up with food scraps. Or are we just supposed to throw them into the next campsite? Who knows. The water has a yucky metallic taste. The toilet bowl is stained yellow from the water. Not too appealing. The last straw though, is the dogs. Either the owners or their neighbors own an outside dog, who starts barking whenever anyone creeps up on the bathroom in the middle of the night. Apparently no one told him this is supposed to be a campground. One night he even appeared from the shadows at the end of the building. I really don't feel like getting bit by Cujo in the middle of the night on my way to the bathroom. And the dogs (this one and others) barked and howled (yes howled) at all hours of the night (even at 2 or 3 am). I stayed here because it had a hot shower. However, I am not planning to return. Next time, I will either forgo the shower and stay at Crabtree Falls campground, or stay in the Pisgah National Forest.

There isn't much parking, maybe 5-10 spots, but tons of cars park along the road. The last few miles to get there is a bumpy gravel road. I had read that it was a 1.5 mile round trip hike, but it ended up being around 2.3 miles. It was a pretty short hike to the summit, but it was a decent climb. It's not marked all that well. At the first split, take a left. There is a sign that points you back to the parking lot which you can use in reverse to figure out which way the summit must be. There's another split close to the top. We were told that both ways will take you to the summit with the left being shorter and steeper. The views at the summit are breathtaking. You can get a view from the left side, but the actual summit is to the right. You can get 360 degree views that are stunning. It was incredibly windy at the summit. The hike up wasn't because of the trees blocking it, but it felt like you might get blown off the summit. We were a little disappointed because the views were still almost completely green, but leaves changing is probably happening a lot later than normal this year because of the warm weather. You can also drive a couple of miles down the road and hike to the Table Rock summit. We decided to call it a day after Hawksbill, but might come back another time. If you're looking for a short hike with awesome views, I would highly recommend this one!
