However- during my…read morebrief visit, the library assistant at the front desk was babbling and giggling loudly for over an hour. It was bizarre! It sounded like a one person tween slumber party. There didn't even seem to be anyone in particular participating in this apparently hilarious conversation with her. I had come to work, but it didn't really bother me, in fact, I figured while this ongoing animated display continued in the front of the library, it would be cool for me to make a short work call from the library, especially since there was no one else in the room besides the other librarian, who seemed to be doing her best to ignore her weirdly immature colleague. Nope. I whispered a couple words into my phone and immediately the other librarian hurriedly approached me and asked me to go upstairs to make calls. I asked her if she was joking or somehow hadn't registered the chaos in the next room- but no, she was dead serious. I was appreciative of the space provided upstairs, but the whole situation just seemed so strange. I haven't heard anyone giggle consistently for that length of time since high school. Her behavior seemed so odd and unprofessional for a person employed at a library. And the other librarian just seemed oblivious. Maybe the cold and isolation of a Maine winter makes people weird.

If you're in the area and (as I was) on vacation, the Blue Hill library stands out foremost as a…read moreplace to get some free wifi for a while--and it fulfills that duty with aplomb. But beyond that, this is actually an amazingly pleasant and well-stocked public library. The second floor boasts a room with a nice conference table to get some work done on, as well as a balcony if you'd rather answer your emails en plein air. Just around the corner is a small selection of books for sale (50c paperback!) for when you've blown through your beach reading, and in between, a rotating selection of local art and history (right now, I'm looking at bronze bears and wooden birds). I've never actually tried to take out a book, so I don't know how easy it is to get borrowing privileges if you don't live in the area, but I'm constantly tempted by (especially) the selection of DVDs that greet you as you walk in. All in all, it's maybe not worth a trip up the coast just for the library, but it's definitely a great place to spend an afternoon catching up on work that can't quite wait until you get back to the big city.

It is quite impressive though small. There are several used books both for sale and for free. The grounds are equally impressive.

But like Coldplay said, if somebody made it, someone will mess it up. This is easily one of the most beautiful places in the USA. It's basically Bar Harbor... you know how Maine is, using different names for all of their different little towns within towns, but this is known to most people as a part of the spectacularly gorgeous England-esque Bar Harbor area. There's not many places I'd rather be in the summer. But in the winter, no chance. I'm amazed that people live here amongst the deathly cold Arctic winds on the freezing cold ice-storm-laden Maine coast in winter, but they do, and some of them even love the winters here. Me, I'll keep visiting in summer.

Chris who is the dump master is so gentle and kind, truly a gentleman. We have been coming here since the 1980s and we have family who dates back 100 years plus. We live on little deer Isle and think it is magnanimous. Please note 8 AM to 4 PM closed Mondays and Thursdays. Recycling is not a thing here on the islands. If you know where recycling occurs please take your recycling home with you. Best to all who know that single used plastic is the scourge of the entire world.

So, I live in a rural area and bring my trash and recyclables to the transfer station near me…read more Additionally, I've gone with my mother to her transfer station so I'm not naive about what a transfer station is like. We rented a house on Deer Isle and one of the check out instructions was that we need to take our trash to the transfer station. It was one of the most disgusting places I've ever been to. I grew up in a city that had garbage strikes so smelly trash I can deal with, but this was just horrific. There was a trash compactor that oozed the most vile liquid I've ever smelled, construction material was heaped in a pile at least 30 feet high and they don't recycle anything but returnable items. Really, Deer Isle is great, I don't actually generate a lot of trash, next time I'll bring it home with me.

Fort Point lighthouse at the mouth of the Penobscot river is a private residence so there is no…read moreentry to the lighthouse, but you can wander the spacious grounds and view the light and bell tower. The lighthouse was Maine's first river light, and the tower and keepers house reolaced the original granite structures in 1857. It you are a lighthouse lover, this is a must see. Small parking area very close to light. There are also remnants of a 1759 old fort (Fort Pownall) close to the lighthouse , alonng with the resting place of Sam Waldo marked with a large rock. Fort Point State Park has walking and biking trails, picnic areas, and wonderful views. Open 8am til sunset, memorial Day to Labor Day.

Dislocated Point…read more Established in 1836 and then rebuilt in 1857, this lighthouse was erected to aid vessels heading into the Port of Bangor and was the first river light in Maine. The Good: *Located inside 120-acre Fort Point State Park with lots of trails and a beach. *Listed in the National Register of Historic Places The Meh: *Not the most impressive lighthouse (only 2.5 stories tall [31ft]) I've seen, but it scratched an itch. *$4/per entrance fee person The Ugly: *Currently a private residence, so obviously no tours or even walking up to the lighthouse. Conclusion: Nice lighthouse in a swell park, but there's probably no need to go out of one's way to reconnoiter it.
