The Year - 1760 The Place - Newtown, Bucks County, British…read moreColony The Cause - A Library for a Free People The oldest library in these United States was founded by the Hicks family on a small piece of land on the edge of colonial Newtown. It has moved several times through the years, and was even closed for a short time due to the "difficulties," otherwise known as the Revolutionary War. Today, it is housed in a small brick building on Centre Street, a few blocks up from State Street and the center of commercial Newtown Borough. It is a nonprofit, membership organization ($20. per individual), servicing the needs of bibliophiles in the community. Some of the books in the collection are older than the library, as are the famous William Penn chairs. It is another one of those well preserved and well intentioned institutions that help us understand the meaning of creating a new country and culture, and honoring that heritage daily. It is a great place to visit, or peruse the stacks. The children's' section is warm and inviting. The volunteer staff, knowledgeable and welcoming. Simply an amazing living history we can all feel, as we imagine how it was to live and learn in the eighteenth century in the formative years of our nation.

The Warminster Township Free Library is where I experienced my first forays into the card catalog…read more Actually, I ran into the catalog before, but there it was the first time I used it electronically! Last I was here, browsers could use terminals (they're probably using eMacs now) to perform searches. After you find what you want, just do the footwork to actually get your books. There's a good selection of fantasy and science fiction novels to borrow and you can even buy their overflow books in the front for cheap. The library is open Monday through Saturday, and have book discussion groups periodically. Recommended if you want to get your reading on!

Came here today for a change of scenery and a quiet environment to work on final exams. This place…read moreis nice, but I don't know what the architects were thinking when they decided on high ceilings. This place is a giant echo chamber. There is so much noise here. Even the receptionist at the information desk was loud when she was talking to a resident. She didn't even try to speak quietly. People can be heard laughing and carrying on, the sound of phones ringing and beeping from scanning books can be heard from the other side of the building. Not an ideal place to come if you are looking for silence. I am astounded by how many people come into a library and do not bother to turn their cell phones on silent. Every few minutes I was hearing someone's phone ring. As I sat in the computer area, almost every person who sat around me had their cell phone on. They do have a really nice children's section, but it would help if they closed the doors so you can't hear the children carrying on from the other side of the library.

I have to say, it couldn't be any easier, not only to register, but also walk around and see what is available. I've stopped in the Book Cellar several times, and it was nice. The used books and media were in good condition, and priced reasonably. The only fault I've found so far was that, on one occasion, the BC was closed because the volunteer didn't show up...couldn't really complain about that. I haven't had the opportunity to avail myself of some of the resources, but hope to in the very near future. I also like the fact that it is part of a consortium of Montco libraries, and you can check resources and book availability online.

HATBORO LIBRARY DENIES ENTRY Went to library 7/16 1:15 pm…read moreto get some books. On the way home from the Hatboro Pool. Was wrapped in a very large, dry beach towel, totally dry, wearing shoes. Looked like a wrap dress. My hair was dry and I had makeup on. There were no other patrons in the library; I knew what books I wanted. The younger librarian asked if I had any clothing to put on. When I replied,'no,' she told me I wasn't allowed to come in. I have been to several establishments wrapped in my towel. No one has ever stopped me or denied me entry. This woman must think the library is only for special patrons, not regular community members. I wonder how many students she's denied entry due to what she deemed they needed. There was no dress or other codes in sight. Maybe this 'fancy' library should post, at the entrance, what's allowed to be able to use a facility that our taxes pay for. Oh, one more thing...there are no. Handicapped Parking spaces at this library. When asked, they responded there wasn't too much room, it would have meant ripping up what they had, and there didn't seem to be a need. As a local person of 39 years,I will never again even think of using Hatboro Library for anything. An embarrassment.
