I really like the hygienist, Freda who works there a few days per week, as she's both gentle and thorough with cleanings. I've seen Dr. Kwong with difficult and anxious patients and he is always kind and patient, explaining what he is about to do. The newly updated office is cheerful, decorated in bright colors and I have never been kept waiting for an appointment with either Freda or Dr. Kwong. I also like the fact that he keeps two free parking spots right outside the front entrance so that I don't have to pay to park in the back each time I come. I can tell that the sterilization area is kept clean and has modern, well-maintained equipment. That also does a lot for one's peace of mind. I have recommended the Urban Dentist to several of my friends, and they are all very pleased as well.

To start with, the receptionists were friendly and helpful when I was booking my appointment, and provided reminders as the appointment approached. When I arrived, I was happy to see that they have great COVID protocols in place. They seem to be well organized, and I didn't have to wait for my appointment. Dr. Okamura was wonderful. He's friendly, personable, knowledgeable and very kind. It is obvious that his patients' well being is his utmost concern. He is patient, and takes the time to explain things carefully. He also didn't try to up sell me on all of the things the corporate dental clinic was trying to tell me I needed. His approach is more conservative and careful, which I really appreciated. He shared his plan with me, and was upfront and honest about the issues I have with my teeth. He did a very thorough initial exam, even measuring my jaw and noting issues with how it opens and closes through various tests (I've never had a dentist do this before). I have had a problem with one of my teeth for almost a year now, which several dentists have tried to fix, but Dr. Okamura referred me to a specialist to take a look before we do anything, and I really appreciated that as well. Our family works with 2 hygienists for cleanings, Viktoriya and Kelly, both are top notch and work with extreme attention to detail! I have recently completed phase 1 of a tooth implant process. It happens to be one of my very front teeth and you can imagine how vulnerable that might make you feel. Dr. Kwong is the dental surgeon that did the procedure and I was nothing less than blown away at how easy and painless it all was. I experienced virtually no pain during or after the procedure. There was very little swelling and absolutely no bruising. At the moment I am fitted with a temporary tooth as the grafting takes place, I will get my permanent implant in July. I'd say he is extremely good at what he does. And I would also have to mention the women who run administration, Michelle and Karolina. Awesomely competent and well organized, super friendly too. I've had bad experiences as a kid/teenager. For weeks, and hours leading up to the appointment, I was getting anxiety and my husband reassured me I was in good hands. My first experience was with the front desk, and the young ladies were lovely and genuine. They had my insurance set up; I didn't need to lift a finger. In LESS THAN 12 hours I got my return from Sunlife (benefits company). It was so simple and quick! The actual office is state of the art, quick, and effective. Everything including X-rays are shown up on LCD TVs in front of you so you know what the dentists plan on fixing or improving. I had Kelly as my dental hygenist. She was kind, relatable, understanding, and empathetic. Did I mention she has a great sense of humour? She was professional and made me feel super comfortable. She demonstrates a true passion for her role and her attention to detail was impeccable. She also explained what plaque and tartar was and how it could impact teeth and gums. During the cleaning process I was fighting to stay awake! I was so relaxed I could have taken a nap! She gave me the remote to the TV and I watched TV and relaxed while she did her thing. Normally I would be gripping the edge of the chair in fear. Dr. Ma is very friendly and understanding. She has a great sense of humour and does her best to make her patients feel welcome. You can also see the openness she has with the hygienists and the sense of partnership they share. The experience from beginning to end has really reduced my fear of dentists and have already booked future appointments with anticipation. I am young and wanting to protect my teeth for decades to come. They have really changed my view of someone putting hands and loud gadgets in my face. Very demeaning and unpleasant experience at this clinic. The…read morereceptionist (NOT THE ONE IN THE PICTURES - middle aged, Caucasian, brown blonde hair) is disrespectful and demeaning to clients. When I had booked my and my husbands first appointments I asked if they would provide an ESTIMATE of the out of pocket cost (after insurance coverage) and she said yes. On the day of the appointment she ridiculed me in front of her colleague (the younger receptionist you see in the photo's) and another client waiting in the waiting room. Saying "I can't tell you what you will pay, don't you know anything about your own insurance?" I explained she told me over the phone that they could provide an estimate - she knew it was her. The hygienist - Angie/Anita (or something close to that) was absolutely wonderful. She calmed my nerves and listened to my concerns and was very gentle during the cleaning. I found Dr. Norman Wong to be the opposite. He didn't listen to my concerns and was only interested in covering up his poor chair-side manner with stupid jokes. I asked him what we could do about the discoloration on the front right tooth (I had a filling in that tooth many years ago and it was becoming dark). He said all he could do was polish the tooth but that was all. I thought that was a bit strange, but since he said that was my only option I agreed to do it.I also had a chip on the front left tooth and was told the only thing we could do was to fill the bottom in and I agreed to that, made an appointment to get both done. He didn't go into much detail about either option. All he did was literally buff the surface of the tooth that was turning brown - the tooth was now shiny, but still discolored. I was pretty mad at myself for allowing this guy to talk me into such a stupid "solution" and paying for that! The filling chipped/ broke off within 10 days. 6 months or so later I had the next cleaning, I had the same hygienist. She asked me about the issues we'd discussed the first time and I told her that I was not happy about the options and service provided by Dr. Wong. She told me that he could re-do the filling so the dark filling would be removed and re-filled, resulting in a white (tooth like) appearance again. I wasn't happy that Dr. Wong did not give me this option the first time. When Dr. Wong came in to follow up as they always do, I asked what we could do about the discoloration and mentioned that the previous time he stated that polishing was the only thing to do. He seemed very annoyed at my asking and being unhappy with the polishing. He said well the only thing that can be done is to re-do the filling - with a very short, irritated attitude. To which I stated well then let's do it - in kind. For the rest of the consultation he spoke to the hygienist, didn't ask if I have any questions (which I did have) and just walked out without even greeting me... Angie/Anita walked me out and handed a sticky note to the male female receptionist, who was busy and didn't notice. I went to the male receptionist who printed our invoices and settled the bill. I told him I have to make an appointment and the other receptionist had the sticky note, but I would need to check my schedule and get back to them. He was professional and kind. I told my husband what happened and he insisted we go back and see if the Dr. could discuss other options (even if we had to wait for a while) like braces, to straighten my teeth because we think problem is that the discolored tooth was skew and positioned in such a way that made discoloration inevitable even if we re-filled the tooth. When we got there I asked the receptionist if she could refer us to an orthodontist, she was alone in front now. She said Dr. Wong is an orthodontist and he would be happy to discuss all my options at my next visit. She implied that I was rude to have left without booking the appointment as discussed with the Dr. I told her I had spoken to her colleague and that I needed to get back to them. We asked to see the Dr. as it would impact the appointment, we'd gladly wait. She said I should've asked all my questions during my appointment, I would need to book another appointment. I told her the Dr. walked out without giving me the opportunity to ask further questions. She said that I had clearly agreed upon a treatment so if I wanted to speak to him I could make an appointment for another day. My husband said we just wanted to make sure what all the options were and explained why we thought there could be more options. I showed her the tooth in question and she started arguing that I had discussed the wrong tooth with the Dr. as the sticky note was for a different tooth and raised her voice at me. I calmly told her there can't be a re-filling on a tooth that doesn't have a filling. Alas, we were were turned away and left without seeing the Dr. I've cancelled my next cleaning - still hurt and disappointed.

She also gave me forms to complete as I was a new patient. The look of the clinic itself is new, modern, clean, and comfortable. There are lots of entertainment options for you in the lounging area while you wait for your turn. As I was seated, the dental assistant asked me what my area of concern was - and it was for my filling. Dr. Wong asked me general questions and concerns with my teeth and then evaluated my teeth and other areas i.e. my jaw, temple, neck. During my procedure, I was able to watch Netflix...yay! My procedure went well and I knew he did a great job. I always felt uncomfortable when I step into a dental clinic as I have this feeling like my teeth will get "butchered". I have always had bad experiences because after my procedures with other dentists, I felt like the problem was not fixed. But not this time! Dr. Wong was gentle, reassuring, and efficient. You know he cares about his patients! I will for sure be back with other procedures. Stress, moving, and other factors likely contributed to the fracture, but that is a story for another time. I searched for "dentist near me" because my regular dentist, the perpetually unavailable and in-demand Dr. Gee in Yaletown, was booked solid. I found Vitacare, with 5-star reviews on Yelp and Google; what could possibly go wrong? I booked the earliest available appointment and went in. A dentist named Dr. Oh saw me. After a brief consultation and some X-rays, he recommended a root canal and crown not only for the fractured tooth, but also for the neighboring one. Both procedures are expensive--around $4,000 per tooth in 2026--and my Canada Life dental coverage caps annual benefits at $2,100. In other words, roughly $8,000 of work was unlikely to be fully covered. The whole situation reminded me of a time I took my brand-new Audi to a brake shop and was told I needed not only new pads, but also rotors--conveniently "refurbished and on discount." Unsure whether a root canal was truly necessary, I tried to book an appointment with Dr. Gee, but of course he was unavailable. After doing some research (including consulting AI), it was still unclear whether a root canal was absolutely indicated. However, the exposed nerve and persistent pain were not relenting. Canada Life approved coverage for only one root canal--about $2,000--so I decided to bite the bullet and proceed with that single root canal. Sometimes imagining the worst-case scenario makes reality feel less intimidating. As I sat in the chair while the nurse prepped for the procedure, I jokingly asked whether she and Dr. Oh had done this before. She said yes, and I thought to myself, "Good, maybe I won't die today." After hours of drilling and grinding, I was getting exhausted. The appointment was booked for two hours, but it felt much longer. Eventually, the overhead monitor that had been playing Netflix timed out, and the screensaver appeared: 3:12 p.m. The procedure had been going on for over three hours. At that point, Dr. Oh sighed and said, "I'm going to refer you to a specialist. I can't get this done. I can't reach the full depth of the tooth to remove what needs to be extracted." He then placed a temporary filling. When the nurse removed the rubber dam and other equipment, I asked how much this session would cost. Dr. Oh said around $500 and mentioned that the specialist he was referring me to was "very good, but also his rate is much higher." My immediate thought was, "Why didn't you tell me this earlier?" To make matters worse, the nurse added, "We're only GPs" (general practitioners). It was a lot of crucial information delivered at a very poor time. The plan was for the temporary filling to last a few weeks to a few months until I could see the specialist. I explained to Dr. Oh that Canada Life was unlikely to approve more work this year beyond the $2,100 already used, especially since this visit alone cost about $500. I asked if he could place a permanent filling instead, as I probably wouldn't be able to afford a specialist this calendar year. He replied that they did not have enough time that day. I did not argue, because I honestly felt both Dr. Oh and the nurse, Natalie, had worked extremely hard. During the procedure, Dr. Oh often hesitated over which instruments or tools to use, but he drilled tirelessly at the tooth even when the anesthetics began to wear off. His hands were very steady, and he did not seem careless or incompetent. My impression was that he might be an ultra-perfectionist who refuses to stop at 90%. Based on the post-op X-rays, I could not see any remaining decay, though I am not an expert. I reiterated to Dr. Oh that it was unlikely I would see the specialist this year due to insurance limits and asked how much a permanent filling would cost. He said $500. I decided to book another appointment to have the temporary filling drilled out and replaced with a permanent one--for now. Hindsight is 20/20. If Vitacare was not confident about performing the root canal, they should have referred me immediately to a specialist, instead of putting me through a difficult, incomplete procedure that consumed nearly half of my Canada Life annual dental maximum. Alternatively, I should not have been charged for a procedure that Vitacare "failed" to complete. Initially, I was genuinely impressed by the effort and care shown by Dr. Oh and Nurse Natalie, but this experience has left a bitter taste in my mouth. Now I have to see a specialist and possibly redo the root canal all over again.
