National Mining Hall of Fame & Museum - The entrance of the Museum

National Mining Hall of Fame & Museum

Really cool museum…read more If you're ever in Leadville, Colorado, I highly recommend stopping at the national mining Hall of Fame and Museum. General adult fee is about $12, but if you are a student, AAA, or 55+, then there is a small discount. There's a certain age limit that kids can come in for free. The look of the museum on the outside is very deceiving. This museum is super packed with lots of information, minerals on display, interactive exhibits, lots of things for kids to learn and discover, and some really cool mining replicas. The museum is about six large exhibits, spanning three floors. Do you learn a lot about different types of minerals, such as molybdenum, gold, iron, etc. there's a lot of history regarding the initial ways people used to mind, how are people mine now, and a lot of the history about the mine close to Ledville, called climax mine. I think some of my favorite parts of the exhibit were seeing all the various minerals and where they came from, including places all over the world. I also really liked the areas that looked like you were going inside of mine and seeing all the realistic railways and designs.

Very interesting, informative displays about mining: discovery of precious minerals, history,…read moreclaims, Colorado lore, to current mine operations. The museum is well laid out and you take it in at your own pace. I expect most people would want to spend 1-2 hours here. I particularly enjoyed reading about the first discovery of gold near Idaho Springs and what lead to the Gold rush. I also enjoyed seeing how mining techniques evolved over a short period to reveal and extract even more and more precious minerals. I learned about florescent rocks. On the top level are the hall of fame members who made significant contributions to mining, like John Wesley Powell, US Army officer, Grand Canyon explorer, professor and of course geologist; and Ed Schieffelin, who discovered silver and founded the town of Tombstone, Az, which at the turn of the last century was the largest town west of the Mississippi River.
