They gave her some of it back, then proceeded to prepare the frozen milk that they had, then brought it and told me and my nurse that if I didn't use it tonight, it needed to be destroyed once again they have wasted more of my breastmilk. I'm going to make biggest complaint. I do not pump that much. I do not have room for them to continuously waste over 700 mL of my milk do not trust them.

In 2012, the American Academy of Pediatrics reaffirmed that babies should be exclusively breastfed…read morefor the first 6 months of life, & stated that preterm infants especially should be exclusively fed breast milk, whether a mother's own milk or pasteurized human donor milk. Yet because several generations of mothers were discouraged from nursing, & because nursing is so incredibly stigmatizing, many mothers have never even seen another woman nurse, let alone learned any of the tricks of the trade. And whereas prematurely-born babies, inc those born by scheduled c-sections, benefit esp from breast milk, their mothers do not always produce milk right away. Thanks goodness for TC's Lactation & Milk Bank Services. The women who work there are absolute Godsends. They're not just board-certified lactation consultants (LCs), they're also RNs & trained peer-counselors, so not only are TC's LCs qualified to help you learn how to nurse & the pump breast milk, they can also advise you on whether any meds you're taking are unsafe for your baby. Moreover, they are qualified to provide encouragement & compassion. And they do so. My twin daughters were delivered at the Pavilion after a short & easy labor that ended in a thoroughly unsympathetic & medically-unnecessary c-section when I was fully dilated, & I didn't even see my babies until they were 13 1/2 hours old. The deliveries set me up for failure as a mother. I didn't even feel like a woman, let alone a Mother. I was unsure I was woman enough to provide milk for 2 babies. And though my son had thrived, the LCs who'd helped when I was nursing him had insisted I'd done it badly. Moreover, as my daughters were to be hospitalized at TCH, I would be trying to provide for them very publicly--every oz I pumped would be accounted for. Unsurprisingly, I suffered from performance anxiety, just after the deliveries, & I needed to get over it fast, in order to try to provide for my babies. Happily, my nurse arrived in my room soon after I did & established that I wished to provide milk for my girls. Within 1/2 an hour or so, she'd brought me all the kit I needed to pump & bottles to pump into, & had shown me how to use the hospital-grade pump in my room. She also contacted Lactation Services. Consultations are free-of-charge for mothers who are themselves inpatients, or who's babies are inpatients at TCH; & the lactation consultants also answer questions by phone or email, for FREE, regardless of whether you or your baby have any affiliation w TCH. LC Adris arrived promptly & explained the protocol for cleaning & sterilizing the pumping kit, & storing & transporting my milk. She also took the time to answer my questions. Her manner was incredibly soothing. This steadied me. I kept pumping. Each day, an LC stopped by my room to answer any questions I might have, & to cheer me on. On the day I was discharged, I asked my nurse to arrange a final meeting w an LC. LC Cathy taught me to hand-express breast milk, which I used to be sure that my milk had let down, once I started nursing my girls. A week later, when anxious to boost my production, I obtained another consultation w the ever-capable Cathy. Cathy gave me a number of tips, & 1 of these worked. At first, I just couldn't produce enough. I was shocked to learn that Neonatology initially wanted 13 ml of colostrum every 3 hours, for just 1 of the girls. Thank goodness TCH also has a milk bank that provides for babies housed at TCH, pasteurized breast milk mixed from carefully-screened donors. An NNP visited me before our daughters' first feeds to determine whether I'd like my colostrum to be topped-up w formula or human milk. I chose the latter. My daughters drank this for several days, after which time one daughter received 1 of her 8 bottles/day from donors. But once my milk was fully in, at ~2 weeks, I found I had no trouble providing for my babies, & in fact we began to accumulate a surplus. This I ultimately gave back to the milk bank, which accepts one-time donations, & also became an ongoing donor. I love giving back to TCH itself, & providing for the babies there & helping their moms, as others did for us. And there are practical benefits too: the milk bank was able to lend me a hospital-grade pump free-of-charge, regular use of which seems to keep me from getting blocked ducts, & I have routine contact w warm, sweet, supportive Donations Coordinator, Laurel, w whom I can speak if any nursing-related problems arise. This is inexpressibly comforting to me--nursing forged the bond between my babies & I, & was the only thing that gave me real peace & well-being during the dark months following their hospitalizations. Nearly a year on, nursing sustains the strong maternal bond it created. The Lactation Consultants of TC's Lactation & Milk Bank Services give nursing mothers the peace-of-mind that they need to nurse, which in turn enables them to feel at peace, & to bring peacefulness to their babies. Thanks all.

In nursing school I was introduced to the idea of doulas, and knew I wanted to have the support of a doula. I went off the recommendation of a friend and found my doula and ended up meeting my midwife through her as well. I finally decided to ditch my OB at his 8th mention of c-section at our prenatal appointments. It was definitely God that placed Afua in my life and I could not be more grateful. Afua came into my life at a time that I lost my sister and mom. She was the mother figure I needed providing me with all the love, support, and tough love that mothers give. I love her approach to patient care because it is unmatched by the experience you get in mainstream healthcare. Afua treated me as family, she validated every one of my concerns no matter how silly they were. She guided me throughout my pregnancy, she provided a place for all expectant and new moms to come together and share their experiences and learn from each other and support one another. She has built her own village here in Houston. I am eternally grateful to her for the support she provided to me without fail and without hesitation. Not only did she provide me with exceptional personalized prenatal care, she safely delivered my baby in the comfort of my own home and she mended my soul. Thank you Afua! I love you!

I…read morestarted my pregnancy with my long-time OBGYN, but quickly realized that there's a difference from a once-a-year appointment and ongoing, regular maternity care... And a difference in what I expected from a health care provider and what the provider was willing to give. I felt rushed during my appointments, spent the vast majority of the visits sitting alone in the waiting room or exam room waiting to be seen, just to finally get 30-60 seconds with the Doctor who barely looked up from the clipboard to ask me 'everything looks good, any questions?' before heading out of the room. I knew I wanted more personalized care from someone truly invested in my and my unborn child's wellbeing, someone who made me feel less like a number and more like a valued client, who welcomed dialogue and discussion on prenatal and birth options without judgement or a 'this is our policy' mentality. Afua and her team met all of my requirements and then set the bar higher than even I could have expected! Her prenatal care model was thorough with more frequent visits than others, which I really appreciated because as a first time mom I would come up with lots of questions. Having the bi-monthly appointments meant I was checking in on my little ones progress more often than my other pregnant friends, it helped alleviate my fears and anxiety that something was wrong and created a strong rapport with Afua. I really love how easy it is to get in touch with Afua- she personally answers all phone calls and texts, so there's no going through a front desk or multiple midwives to talk to. It's easy, efficient, and really made the prenatal (and birth!) experience comfortable. She also has monthly group prenatals, where other pregnant moms get together to discuss relevant birth and childcare topics, meet new friends, and of course eat!! I love the community feeling and getting to know other moms in the area who are also planning on delivering with a midwife. She also hosts meetings for dads, where the men have the same opportunity to mingle and get/give parenting advice. My husband and I opted for a home birth, and the whole process went so smoothly that I'm still in awe that my daughter is here, healthy, and happy, and it's all thanks to Afua.

If you anticipate having a low-risk pregnancy and you would like a natural birth in a hospital…read moresetting, the midwives at WSH are the best! The only other midwife delivering in a hospital in the Houston area is one that works with Dr. de Ayala at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Hospital. The 6 midwives work together in a group to care for their patients -- because they're the only hospital midwife group in Houston, they do fill up fast so you should call and register with them as a patient AS SOON AS POSSIBLE once you find out you're pregnant. I believe they take only 40 pregnant patients per month. I was very pleased with their care overall as I delivered my second baby. The reason for 4 stars and not 5 stars is just because of the few items in the "cons" list below. PROS: * The midwives treat pregnancy like a normal, natural event -- rather than a minefield loaded with risks and obstacles. They are low-intervention and this should decrease your risk of a C-section. But you can still get an epidural if you want. * They don't order a bunch of extra or unnecessary tests * They already automatically do all the things I wanted in my natural birth plan (such as: you can eat and drink during labor; intermittent fetal monitoring; birthing ball is provided; option to use hydrotherapy during labor -- there's a tub and shower in the L&D rooms; compresses and counterpressure and lubricant to decrease the risk of tearing when you push; pushing allowed in different positions; delayed cord clamping; they try not to break your water artificially unless indicated for some reason & they'll discuss it with you first to get your permission; post-delivery Pitocin is given on a case-by-case basis) CONS: * Parking can be a headache (Parking in the underground garage will cost you $8-10 per visit. Sometimes the garage gets completely full & you may circle for a while before you find a spot, or you may have to park off-site. You can buy a discounted parking pass to get up to 15% off. You could also park in the surface lot across Main St from the hospital & it's cheaper, but it fills up quickly on weekday mornings and the parking spots are tiny.) * On average, I spent about 1 hour total at each visit -- they often run behind, so it's not a quick in-and-out visit. But part of this is because the midwives take the time to talk to you and address your concerns. * There are 6 midwives, so you'll get someone different at most appointments -- then when you go into labor, you'll get whoever's on call but depending who it is, you may not have seen them in months - so they could be a little unfamiliar to you. * If you need an emergency C-section, it'll likely be done by a 3rd year resident (but these are the most experienced residents who are almost done with their program and almost ready to practice independently).
