This consultant told me to stop breastfeeding because my baby's tongue "might get sore." After following her plan for a month, my baby lost the ability to nurse. It went against current standard practices. I filed formal complaint against her with the IBCLE board. I saw Leah Whitley five days after my baby's tongue tie release. After a full day of completely successful breastfeeding, my baby was calm, satisfied, and showing no hunger cues. I was even considering cancelling our follow up appointment because everything was finally going well. At that visit, Leah told me it was "dangerous" to keep breastfeeding because my baby's tongue muscles might "get sore." She instructed me to stop breastfeeding and begin triple feeding instead. She is wonderful! Long story: Got my baby boy's tongue and lip tie released when he was 2 1/2 weeks old. I was having pain from him nursing within a couple days of being home from the hospital. Then he stopped latching altogether. Leah correctly diagnosed a tongue tie - later confirmed with pediatrician and pediatric dentist - and helped with getting him to latch, as well as provided short-term strategies to try to lessen the pain and exercises to do before his tongue and lip tie release surgery. As I first time mom, I did a lot of research about breastfeeding prior to giving birth to my daughter. I knew it was going to be a tough journey, but I didn't realize just how tough it would be. Breastfeeding seemed to be going fine while I was in the hospital. My little girl latched immediately and was nursing around the clock. However, when we got home I began to experience worsening pain with each nursing session. Ah, breastfeeding. The most natural thing in the world, right? How is it that something so ancient and natural can feel so excruciating? It's like I had given birth to a milk-sucking vampire. You would think as a second time mom I'd have an easier time nursing, but no. It was rough. Again. Thankfully, Leah was available to help me through the worst of it. She watched me nurse first and then walked me through some pointers. She is very hands-on, showing you what to do instead of just explaining it. She was able to help me get a nearly pain-free latch (nearly only because I had already created damage from a shallow latch over the past 5 days) and then watched while I did it on my own. We consulted Leah after enduring 6 long months of painful breastfeeding. Although we had seen other lactation consultants, we did not get any helpful advice or answers to our many questions.
