This place is legend and folklore if you are a Fulham supporter who made the trip away to Hamburg…read morefor our first game on the European mainland for some 15 years back in 1998. A few fans discovered this tourist trap beside 'the naughty street' in daylight and it became for some ungodly reason the place to be in town prior to the game. I remember wanting to go elsewhere.
A small, brickie friendly pub, it was like being in Auf Wierherisen Pet with English workmen drinking after a day of building, plastering, plying and doing what sparkies do. English beers on tap, in bottles included the infamous bottle of dog, Newcastle Brown. As a 14 year old, I have to admit I thought the place was pretty crap, as it is small, cramped, dirty, slightly dusty and dark but I was getting drunk and the company I was keeping of other, older Fulham supporters were funny.
After the game (which we won vs Hamburg SV, 2-0) Captain Morgan (Football player Simon, not he of dark rum and piracy fame) asked manager Kevin Keegan if he could let let his hair down with a couple of the lads seeing as it is a different country. On their walk they were spotted in their sparkling new tracksuits and dragged into the London pub where around 100 Fulham fans were celebrating our preseason victory.
I can't really say more about what went on here, but I am sure this place has never and will never see a night like it again. The reeperbahn is one hell of a place, but lets just say that Morgan and the boys made it back for breakfast where they were praised for being 'so responsible and only having one drink last night'.
Kevin 'King Kev' Keegan thought that the squad had come back as promised before the witching hour and had a full nights sleep before getting up early, slipping the team tracksuit on and getting downstairs for breakfast before riding the coach home. I am not going to tell him that they were in the London pub with the fans till 6am!!!
Although, he might read it on Qype now!!!
