Dr Soper is a very caring, competent, available, intelligent and very knowledgeable Doctor. I couldnt find another psychiatrist that has helped me as much as he has throughout the years. Soper continues to bill me falsely for a July 2021 "no Show" though I was no longer seeing him as I told him after he moved to McKinleyville plus required a vaccine; I even emailed him facts revealing that the Covid Vax were experimental and NOT a vaccine. For some reason, He must have written down that I was to have a July appt. though I was no longer his patient. Months ago I contacted them and they know I have NOT BEEN a Soper Patient SINCE BEFORE JULY. Again, this Jan 2022, their office so inefficient or greedy they STILL ARE TRYING TO CHARGE me for this wrong "no show" The only time Dr, Soper was nice to me was at out first meeting. I was deleted from the list of new patients. They're reason was because I was "harnessing the staff" I'd never used a cuss word but was persistent and did call often. Never raised my voice only stated my need and time limit. I thought the staff was abrupt uncaring and down right rude. I believe this was a blessing after all. After reviewing Dr Soper I found he had many more negative reviews than positive. His staff, after all, are dealing with the mentally ill. Thank you to Robyn the amazing new receptionist and the best most helpful part of this practice. She really helped when trying to figure out how to get my insurance to cover my medication since this practice is not allowed to call my insurance since I have partnership. But other than her SAVE YOURSELF and find a different practice. This is a review for the office of Dr. Sopar. Family Psychiatry or as I think of it. Le pill farm. My meetings with Wendy are incredibly short. Always under 15 min after waiting 15. I feel like she gives me a prescription and pushes me out the door. That's about all she does. IT TOOK OVER A WEEK JUST TO GET HER TO CONFIRM I WAS A PATIENT SO MY NEW PHARMACY COULD FILL MY SCRIPT! The pharmacist and I both called twice. The accountant often didn't charge my card and would ask me to pay on my next session which messed up my finances a lot. For a whole year I thought I was all paid up but no. This has happened several times. One time I wouldn't care. But urg. Don't even get me started on how scammy they are with my deductibles. read more

Don't believe any of the negative reviews. Dr. Soper and his staff(All new people since many of these reviews were posted) have been MORE than helpful in helping to treat my dibilitating OCD, Depression and anxiety. They are always so kind and understanding, even when I come in loudly jumping, tapping and compulsing in the waiting room. The doctor has been willing to try various meds and ideas that no other practitioner I had dealt with. I had previously went to County Mental health for years which would frequently cancel appointments the day of and the day before, and had me talk to someone over a screen who was borderlining on completely unwilling to help. EVERY previous psychiatrist who I had seen mentioned the Tricyclics anti-depressant Anafranil(clomipramine) as the "gold standard" for OCD but never bothered to try it. Finally After a while of seeing Soper and trying different things He decided to try it, but made sure to warn me of the various side-effects it can produce, but I was willing to try it and was grateful to finally try Needless to say I have realized I am quite treatment resistant and it didn't work well for me, nor did it cause many side effects though, so he decided to taper me off of it. Since then we have tried other treatments as well, and FINALLY after all this time I am beginning to be able to resist some of my symptoms and slowly but surely I am beginning get better with some of my compulsions. It's been tough, but this is the most most relief and least compulsions I have had in as far back as I can remember. read more

I keep seeing reviews about the office receptionists. After a couple of years I feel it is my turn to leave my two cents. I am a local provider and I love my physician, hence the reason I still come back. I am not sure what their qualifying applicant criteria is, however I am pretty sure Dr. Soper sent someone down to the Blue Heron on Broadway and picked the first two women with a GED to offer a position. I hate to be so brutal, but the women are such garbage. I don't expect this to be the classiest establishment, but they should hold themselves to at least decent standards. Last time I was in there, the front desk girl took her shoes off and brought her lunch out of the office, heated it up before she came back to "assist" me, and ate in front of me slopping food on the desk. I kid you not, you can't make this up. It is comical, but frustrating when you have to deal with it on a monthly basis. The other woman has a baby crib in her office and her trash husband was in there last time while they chatted away ignoring me, her wrapped in a blanket. The sleeze level here is out of control. If you want a call back, look elsewhere. That is another criteria need not be met in their hiring process. Phones are hard... His only solution seems to be to drug a person up. So if your a pill seeker he is your man but if you want real therapy and medicine support he's not helpful .not to mention he didn't listen to anything I said I had to repeat my basic information throughout our visit. He is not compassionate and comes off as though he looks down on people with mental health issues. He is more interested in making money then helping people. First thing, my Dr. is great (for me) and that is the only reason I still come here. The front desk ladies have never treated me respectfully yet that is all I offer them. They will not call back to confirm your appointment time, if you leave a message, and if you miss it because of that, they'll make you pay before you can contact your Dr. or get a new appointment, or a refill on my siezure/psych meds. It's been 2 days since I left my first message, this round, and still have not heard back. And they won't pick up the phone.. Again, the reason I still go here; I have history/rapport with the Dr. And my case, so I am comfortable with him, I just have to get past the front lobby. Cannot keep track of records, rude receptionist, refused to right a very reasonable mistake involving simple miscommunication, moved without informing me and then dropped me as a patient when I missed the appointment because I showed up to the old location. I'd been wanting to leave anyway since he asked me about about a story from a book I had mentioned in previous visit as if it was something I said had happened to me in my real life. Also compared me directly to another patient of his which is very inappropriate and made me feel very uncomfortable and judged. Also refused to release my records to me, which is illegal. My regular doctor just gave them to me herself. His "note taking" was shockingly inaccurate, and described how I acted at the meetings instead of the things I was talking to him about. read more

Dr Soper needs to retire! He was rude, not at all patient friendly and was sloppy in his diagnosis. In fact he held several pages of papers from other practitioners in his office. For some reason I was given a bi-polar dx but in fact the only precedence for that was that I told his nurse practitioner that I didn't tolerate anti-depressants. Dr. Soper did not ask me one question about my mood but prescribed Lithium which I was not able to tolerate. The psychologist David Roth was equally peculiar. He kept telling me that my perceptions about a certain situation were "completely off". Well maybe they were but I had never met the man before and he certainly did not create a "therapeutic environment" for me to want to speak to him further. I agree with everyone else about how difficult it is/was to talk to the front desk. I have worked in psychiatric hospitals for a number of years. I know many psychiatrists and psychologists who are pro-patient and who create a positive curative corrective experience. This is not the place. read more

I just started seeing Wendy Brandon in the same office as Soper. The first time I was appalled by the office staff. First, they didn't open in time. I had an 11 AM appointment and the office woman didn't show up until 11:15. She was very disorganized, said they had problems with billing so they wouldn't charge me. Well that was nice but wtf! Then her boyfriend arrived with a big dog, pushed past me and slumped down on a grubby couch in her office with the dog next to him. The waiting room was awful, ugly old furniture, things seemed dirty and very unwelcoming.Then I had to wait another half hour to see Wendy. Things got much better. She was kind and thorough, explaining things to me about my medication and we connected on a personal level too, which was nice. I told her about her front office and she said she'd heard a lot of complaints and that they were young and had no idea how to be professional. Second appointment. Oh the difference! The waiting room had new chairs, rugs, paintings. Wendy had moved into a new office and that had new furnishings too. She was a bit more distracted but I still feel good about seeing her. She listens, is attentive, discusses concerns etc. Her office staff are still somewhat lacking, but to me that's less important for my health than the actual practitioner. Worst experience of my life. Okay so I read the reviews on here before choosing to ignore the warnings because I figured it was just horror stories. I really wish I would have listened. All I needed was a doctor in Humboldt who could write prescriptions, I've been receiving the same medications for over 10 years now. It was fine the first two months, then I randomly ran out of medication, usually I get a 3 month supply but was only sent one month. No big deal, I'll call when they're open and have them send one over. I called multiple times and no answer, I left voicemails and no answers. Finally the next day I get a voicemail saying they sent in my prescription. I had to work the rest of the day so the following morning I went in to pick up my medication. Apparently they never got a prescription so I call the office 6 times within 40 mins and finally get an answer. I told the receptionist who I was and my situation and she told me she would forward my call to the receptionist--wait what, isn't that who I called? Then I got sent to voicemail. So I call back and told her I was sent to voicemail and she replied, 'so leave a voicemail,' I told her it has taken them days to respond and at this point its an emergency. She told me, 'we're very busy, you'll have to leave a voice mail.' I left a voicemail and waited 30 minutes before getting fed up and driving there. Once I arrived there was no one in the office, no patients or doctors, and the woman on the phone was just sitting at the desk, yet I still had not been called back. I told her my situation and recognized it as the same woman I spoke with on the phone, and she told me my doctor would not be back at the office until Friday and to call again then. I asked her for an emergency number for the doctor and she said she had no phone number for her--what? So I drove all the way to my doctors office because she couldn't tell me over the phone and instead sent me to voicemail. I asked how the prescriptions were sent and if she'd have access as I was told one was written and already sent, there should be a copy or something, she told me she wasn't a doctor and couldn't log onto their accounts--what? She said she had some paper prescriptions and some were sent electronically and couldn't access them. I asked again if she could call the doctor to send a copy to which she said, 'no come back Friday.' Honestly the most unprofessional and disrespectful receptionist I have ever had the displeasure of dealing with. Honestly I'm not sure what her job is, she can't contact the doctors, she can't find prescriptions, she can't manage to answer the phone or return phone calls, and apparently her or another receptionist can't communicate that a prescription needs to be written and sent to a doctor who's office is 3 feet from their desk. I might have been willing to drive to Eureka to see doctor Brandon but after dealing with her receptionist Shirley, and being unable to contact her in an emergency, I just can't say I will ever go here again. The whole place is like a bad acid trip. Yuck. There is dog hair all up and down the stairs, yet I've never seen a dog there. Everything is a bit dirty. The decor is like if the movie The Shining had a baby with someone's dead grandma's mothball riddled livingroom and that then ended up in a sad thrift store in the 1980's, (which may have been the last time that place has had a deep cleaning). The building always smells like old soup. The receptionist is rude and clearly miserable, (I would be too if I worked in that place). Except for once, Soper has been 20mins late every time I've seen him. He then spends 10mins in silence reading your file (without any explanation until you ask what is going on), while you sit awkwardly in his nasty office. Soper is condescending, demanding, rude, and creepy. Did I mention he is creepy? Cuz he is creepy. Very creepy. I would not be the least bit shocked if I saw him in the news one day, as I suspect he may have a freezer full of human body parts that he has kept as trophies. He wears black socks with his white running shoes & slightly high water dockers style pants. If that isn't a sign of a sociopath then I don't know what is. There is definitely a dark energy there and you feel like you need a shower to get it off of you.Though hard to find, there are other options in Humboldt. Seek them out. If you weren't crazy before you entered the building, you might be when you leave. Steer clear. read more

Also, very important, it's legal, and you really should ask for copies of the clinical notes. I reviewed them with an LCSW and was shocked by what I saw. They did not reflect the actual meetings and were disturbing in many ways, such as how and why meds are prescribed, what he tells the patients to do/not do, and his very negative attitude towards women. Shirley is overall just a bad person and should not be working around vulnerable people. The office overall is very unprofessional, I have heard them talk about patients in the open, violating client confidentiality. Both the doctor and staff are horrible. Shirley, the receptionist, is incredibly rude, doesn't listen, and is incapable of actually doing her job. I called with an urgent question for the doctor because I was having a bad medication reaction and didn't know if I should go to the ER. Shirley informs me they don't do urgent questions, no exceptions, and I can expect a call back in a couple days. The billing manager has repeatedly tried to overcharge and once threatened to not allow me to see the doctor if I didn't pay up on an imaginary balance. Today nobody checked me in for over 5 minutes because they were deciding their lunch orders. Then there is Soper himself. He is completely apathetic to his patients' needs. He tried to prescribe me a medication that my primary care warned me would have a potential fatal interaction with my other meds. When I pointed that out his only response was, "Oh yeah." Dr. Soper shares an office with my psychiatrist Dr. Bayan. When she is vacationing (which is often), Dr. Soper writes RX's for her patients. When I have had to go in and pick up my rx from the medical office both billing and Shirley were a rude as can be. The billing person said I could not have my medication until I had paid for everything upfront. It was very awkward and she was so loud in front of other clients. She had a mouth full of food while she was telling me to pay up. I will write a review of Dr. Bayan as well. These psychiatrists are unprofessional and careless which is unfortunate because we need competent medical professionals in Humboldt County. I feel like they think they can get away with treating their patients poorly because there is such a shortage of mental health professionals here. Do not get involved with this office! read more

The office staff never answers the phone and does not reply to voicemails. I had a bad reaction to my medication and was unsure if I should stop taking it. I was never able to get ahold of anyone at the office. I left several voicemails and never received a call back. I would avoid this office if you are seeking initial treatment for depression or anxiety.
