Was looking around for months for a solid MMA gym and tried a few different ones and this one…read moreeasily was the best. Also the price is very fair and the instructors are amazing. They know you are new and will help guide you with your first steps. It takes a little time to adjust to the routine and what the training is like but you will easily get a rhythm if you show up consistently. They want you to come back and they want you to improve. Also They let you try out the gym before you sign on. They have lots of gym equipment in here as well so there is no need to pay extra for another gym membership just to lift weights. It's like a playground, you can come in and lift weights, you can practice on the bags and get better or you can take the different classes they offer all under one roof.

I'll let the vids speak for itself lol…read more Uprise was my first gym ever. It's been two years and I've loved every minute of it. This gym changed my life!! There's so much I could say about Pete and this gym- but to keep a long story short- I'm grateful I ended up here of all places. I was 21 and new to LA. I've struggled with weight all my life and wanted to find something to keep in shape. Thought I was going to boxing, ended up in Jiu Jitsu. I was the only girl, which can be scary. But Pete was super welcoming and treated me very equal to the guys and believed in me. I fell in love with the sport and did everything day and night- MMA, muay thai, bjj. Pete believes in people and CARES about his fighters. He's a very genuine and honest person, and his leadership trickles down into the culture. He's very much a life teacher in many ways and loves his analogies lol. I've learned so much about not just fighting, but life and the martial arts ways. Like I said, Pete and this gym has changed my life. 10/10 one of the best things that's ever happened to me!!

They are very welcoming of beginners and have several regulars who have been doing judo for a long time as well. The most senior instructor Kenji Osugi is a real stickler for the rules and will call you out for doing any techniques that might injure yourself or your randori partner. For $50/ month, you won't find a better deal for a martial arts school anywhere else. You do have to help roll up and put away the mats after practice and the instructors expect all the beginners to eventually know the proper way to do this. This is a very typical way to show the teachers humility and respect.

It's like home, Senseis are so caring and attentive to each child, bringing the best out of them, showing discipline, hard work, great life lesson Update after 8 month: We love this place, I'm happy I found this school for my child. We love the sensei's/instructors. Each Sensei and all volunteer instructors are super dedicated, it's unbelievable how much time and energy they invest for no money. They spent same energy and dedication with one or 20 kids. This place is all about teaching your child to become a great citizen and a great Athlet with discipline and knowledge . They don't do this for the money, it's about $50-60 a month and you train 3x a week for 1 hour. It's about $5 an hour of judo training. They encourage you to come and train as often as possible and it doesn't matter if you are boy or girl, male female, beginner or advanced. Everyone treats each other with respect and everyone is there to learn. They handle Covid situation perfectly and follow guidelines. During juniors class, 2-3 black belt Senseis are present, with 2-3 volunteers. It's all based on volunteering and not making money, That says everything. This Dojo is one of the old traditional judo dojos. Judo teaches hard work, discipline, patience, builds self confidence and sets goals at school or life. Encourages to be better in academics and everything necessary in life. In this 8 month I see different kids coming with different levels and all of them improve and get better and independent. Thank you Senseis for your hard work and dedication for our kids.

They have women's only open mat from time to time and I think that is so neat. I haven't seen that in other places. The ratio of women is definitely higher than other dojos. So ladies, if you want to find sparring partners, this is definitely the place. It's super clean. Aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Bathrooms are equipped with showers. That's next level stuff. Parking: can be tough sometimes since it's street parking mostly. But definitely not koreatown level difficult. You can find parking.

I somehow stoped when I hurt my shoulder in one class and after that I was having other injuries one after the other and so I could not got back , but I wish I can. I still practice some of the things I learn. I have fond memories there and the aikido Japan trip. Althouh the facility is simple and small , one small restroom, 2 small change room ,sensei's office. is it sufficient. Which is why the 4 stars. I also learned kenjutsu there. Thier kids classes where pretty good.It geared toward learning how to not to get injured when falling etc , balance and some self defence aikido style, Speaking of balance, I have scoliosis and the training there helped with my balance and leg strength becuase one time I tried surfing for the first time in Hawaii and everytime I stand up I applied the things I learned and stood up and stayed in the board until I almost reach the shore, well... for a beginer wave that is. I miss it and the people.

I repeatedly asked owner John Whitman if he could handle an autistic individual in his class. Time and time again, he assured me he could and would. Instead, I was given sub standard quality of lessons. Per the California Disabled Persons Act (California Civil Code § 54) and the Federal Americans with Disabilities Act (42 USC § 12101), I requested several accommodations. These accommodations included having the lessons (and breakout) clearly outlined in advance. Videos with subtitles of the moves I needed to practice. And to slow down his rate of speech. I also asked for a copy of the rules so I was familiar with Dojo etiquette. Lastly, I asked that communications be consistent, I can't have people giving me conflicting directions. John repeatedly refused these accommodations, no matter how many times I asked. No videos, no written instructions, no written rules, no slowing down the rate of speech, none of it. This was all very blatantly illegal. Accordingly, a formal complaint was sent to the California Civil Rights Department. The case # is 202507-30481828. This wasn't the only issue with the facility. There was a large, metal nail-like structure coming out of the floor. I hurt myself twice on this, repeatedly notifying staff, management, and John. The ceiling would leak when it's writing. These are basic safety issues caused by negligence. I will never forgive the StrikeFit Alliance nor owner John Whitman for violating my civil rights and for providing me with such abysmal instructions. Thanks for re-victimizing a rape survivor....

Unprofessional and unsanitary, pass this place up!!…read more The environment is unsanitary. I had to clean up blood from the mats before using them multiple times. The roof leaks and the air is thick with mold/mildew/funk. I have never seen the floors being cleaned in between classes and I have been disgusted many times by the thick grime on the barefooted staff and members' feet. The biggest disappointment (among many) was that the gym is not inclusive in my experience. Even minimal requests can be met with aggressive, bullying-type behaviors. I observed this from multiple staff members. There is something very unsettling about a gym that does this and also presents itself as a place for vulnerable people to learn self defense skills. The classes were mediocre and the training did not seem to produce any big gains. Even their "fight team" appears undistinguished. Overall this place just left me with a bad taste.
