There's a souvenir shop and little pastry shop right across from the hotel. There's also a cute little restaurant in the hotel (I don't know if it's just for breakfast or lunch) but it was always crowded (separate from the area where you eat your complimentary breakfast). We ate in the area with the free breakfast and it was decent, just the basics. The dinner is what shined. It was amazing. The food was actually better than the Old Swiss House which I was kind of shocked by. My mom got the asparagus ravioli (one of the best things I've ever eaten in my life), so so good. I'm sure it's seasonal though during asparagus season. Hotel was a 10 min walk from the train station. Easy walk.

This is a very small hotel near the tiny city center of Surcee. We were supposed to stay in…read moreLucerne but there was no availablity. This town is about 10-15 min. outside of Lucerne. The hotel itself is OLD...the tile in the room and the bathroom looks to be from about 1970. The bathroom is miniature (and I am very used to small bathrooms and European-sized rooms). The bathroom had a mildew smell as well. There is a safe in the room but they did not provide us a key to the safe. Nothing about the hotel felt updated at all. The only thing I can say is that it is a non-smoking hotel which is nice, and the breakfast was pretty good. The tap water in Switzerland is incredible and we were happy that the hotel provided two bottles of fresh water free of charge in the room. We promptly dumped out the processed water and used the bottles to fill up with the delicious tap water from the bathroom sink. The room was so small and outdated, though, that I cannot give it more than two stars. And believe me, I'm a big fan of Europe's old, quaint hotels. This one just doesn't feel quaint at all....it just feels like it needs a little update.

Important: despite the name, Holiday Inn Express Luzern - Neuenkirch is NOT in Lucerne. It's…read moreactually located in Rothenburg, so keep that in mind when booking. The hotel is surrounded by farmland and open countryside, which makes it peaceful but also quite removed from Lucerne. By public transportation, it can take 50+ minutes to get to Lucerne, while an Uber is around 20 minutes, depending on traffic. Because of the location, I'd say this hotel is best suited for travelers who have a car. One convenient thing is that there's a Coop and Burger King right next to the hotel, which makes grabbing food, drinks, or essentials very easy. The hotel itself is fine for a practical stay, but the location was the biggest drawback for us. Also no AC so during summer it is only a small table fan for a room. If your main goal is exploring Lucerne, I would recommend staying closer to the city, even if it means paying a little more. Overall, a decent option if you have a car and want a quieter location, but not my recommendation if you're visiting Lucerne without one.

The rooms are exactly what you'd expect from a Holiday Inn Express - neat, simple, and well taken care of. However, I did find a piece of food on his side of the bed against a wall where it looked like nobody cleaned. The staff deserves special mention, especially Nina at the front desk, she had the area cleaned up and she was incredibly kind and helpful with everything from directions to restaurant suggestions. She really took the time to make sure we were comfortable and gave us some great ideas for local food and places to check out.The only real downside was the location. Luckily, dislocation had a breakfast buffet, which was one of the best buffets we had the whole time we were overseas. It's part of a rest stop area right off the highway, which has its pros and cons. On the plus side, there's a small CO-OP store, a Burger King, and a nice little vegetarian buffet right nearby -- all within easy walking distance. So grabbing food or snacks was really convenient. But if you don't have a car, it can be tricky. The nearest bus stop is over a mile away, and the walk goes through a housing area where a few dogs wander around freely. I actually had to watch out a couple of times to keep my wife and myself safe during our walk. After that, she decided taxis were the better option, and I didn't blame her. Still, the views around the area are beautiful -- peaceful Swiss countryside make it feel calm and scenic. Overall, the stay was comfortable and enjoyable once we figured out how to get around. If you have your own car or plan ahead for transport, I'd definitely recommend it.
