When Dog Fight started, we said no chains. But as time went by, we started seeing that Sonic commercial. You know, the one with the quarter-pound foot-long chili cheese coney in it. So we amended the "rules" (because we can) and decided to give Sonic a shot. First we were off to Sonic Drive-In. And that meant our chain trek now included a 10 minute wait for the noon train to pass over Assembly Street. When we finally made it to Sonic, we navigated to a shady parking spot. All the while, people churned through that drive-thru at a hefty clip. We believe, after great debate, that the foot-long quarter-pound coney and the extra long chili cheese coney are the same item although both are listed on the menu. If the foot-long's not your bag, try a lady-sized normal coney or a corndog. We have to give the Sonic staff some props here. The place was a mad house and our order was chaotic and changed three times before we paid and they got it right, 100%. But that's it for the yapping part of the review, let's get down to the dogs. Not great, but the sheer gratitude of finally having a foot-long in our hands made it taste better. Jeff felt it was probably the most visually appealing dog we've judged to date. Melissa felt it was what she expected: a basic convenience store chili cheese hot dog - just longer. The Toppings Sonic scored extra points in the topping category. Their chili was good, "zingy" Julie declared. The cheese was melty. The bun was light and sweet. All together the foot-long was a fine, fine specimen to ingest. The Packaging At previous Dog Fights, the topic of packaging has come up here and there. Sonic took the day with their clever foot-long foil bag and paper box that included instructions on the proper way to eat your coney. Melissa gave high marks to Sonic's clever packaging, too, but reminded us all that you can't eat it. The Verdict According to Jeff, Dog Fight Director of Math and Spreadsheet Maintenance, Sonic finished in a distant ninth place with a score of 21.08. The bottom line? Sonic offers a great looking dog that will do in a pinch if you can't make it to a local purveyor of hot dog goodness. I'm only in town visiting and just got here after a 16 hour drive hoping for something quick and easy. I was very wrong. I pulled into a stall because at my hometown sonic and most I've been to have very quick service at the stalls compared to the drive through. However it took over 45 minutes for me to get my food and even then when they first came out they only brought one of my two items out at first. I ended up getting out of my car and walking to the door on my two crutches as I'm an amputee just to try to get someone's attention. takes forever for you to even order your food. Came at 11pm and it wasn't too busy but it took 15-20 minutes until someone actually talked to us AFTER I pressed the red button. The two guys sitting across from us were waiting a while too up until the point to where they said "4th time this week" and left to which I'm guessing they have visited this sonic four times and didn't even get to order. After waiting forever hungry and tired I decided to order through the app which was confusing (almost as confusing as the menu) and the order I took forever to put together on the app didn't even go through. The lady on the intercom finally came on and said some mumble jumble that I thought meant that she had no order placed on our stall. I pressed the red button again and a different lady was on the intercom and I asked her if we had placed any order to which she said no. Ridiculous. I placed my order with her finally and she actually seemed to know what she was doing. It's been 50 minutes since we got here and we still have no order. Then she snatched the correct amount of money out of my hands and at this point my fiancé was extremely angry because of the way she was treating me and yelled at her. It's sonic, so you know what to expect with the food, and I do generally like sonic. But if you give these guys an order even slightly out of the ordinary, they mess it up, guaranteed. I ordered a large #8 spicy with chili cheese tots and a Dr. Pepper, and after the person taking the order asked me several times to repeat it, I still somehow ended up with a small popcorn chicken and a medium drink. This isn't the first time something like this has happened. It actually happens to me more often than not. I generally order a #1, and since traditionally Sonic only put one condiment on those burgers, I chose "a number one with mayo". But instead I got all three. Ick. So the next time I went there, I ordered "A number one with just mayo", and got a burger that was just meat, cheese, and mayo. The only reason I kept with it is that it's the only place that serves hot fast food on my way home from work. It is incredibly frustrating to get home and find out that I paid for a meal that I didn't get. EDIT: I gave them another shot today and ordered the same #8. I wish I could give a zero rating to this place, actually the whole sonic organisation. I ordered a chicken sandwich meal and it took them almost 15 mins to get the meal to me. Also since we had parked in the order booths, the credit card readers did not work and the server had to take my card inside to read it resulting in more wait time. When I got home and started eating the sandwich turns out its not cooked right and is freaking raw inside.
