Since my house was in Bixby Knolls, one of my daughters found Bixby Towers and walked in and signed me up for an assisted living room. I had no idea what it would be like, other than visiting my sister in the Bay Area in a senior living facility. The last time I was in communal living was 65 years ago in the Air Force. From the moment I walked into my room, I felt that this was a place for which I was destined. The staff here, from the bottom to the top, are both friendly and caring. We all kid around, but most of them do their jobs with a smile. It can be very stressful for them but they don't pass that on to the residents. I have made many friends here and the activities directors do a great job as well. I am happy to be in a place like the Towers.

The lobby is lovely, the staff is kind, the price is reasonable, the residents are wonderful and the location is great. You may see lots of comments here about the HVAC situation. My mom had partial AC and heat for about a year. there are two hvac units in the apartment, one never worked, no one responded to requests for repair but the single unit worked fine until about 2 months ago. It wasn't a big deal until August. Her room was tolerable (around 78-80 degrees), until this recent heat wave when it was 83+ for a few days in a row (telling her to "get a fan" was not helpful, she has multiple). We asked multiple times to have window cranks fixed but no one responded so she couldn't even open all the windows at night. I know this is an older building, which is part of the charm, but the management seems excessively evasive when asked if and when anything will be fixed. I think if they were more forthcoming about what was being done folks wouldn't feel like they are hiding something. This goes for all issues like the recent loss of hot water over the weekend. Setting expectations makes life better for all! She loves her apartment and the community but I fear she may have to move if these things don't get resolved.

The owner was nothing more then a liar and a thief. first night my sister was there he called said to come get my sister or he was going to call 911 and have her placed on a 72hr hold. The next day I found Brittany house I spoke with Erin I let her know what had happen with beach homes she was so understanding of what was happing. I meet that same day with Erin she was amazing with in a few days my sister was moved to brittany house. Erin had gone out of her way to help and understand in a very difficult time. I would strongly advise anyone considering this place for a loved one to look elsewhere. The Memory Care/Locked Unit: The "care" in the locked unit was non-existent. The staff--mostly teenagers--were huddled together on their phones, completely ignoring the residents. The smell of soiled clothing was overwhelming, suggesting residents are left for long periods without changes. Even more alarming, I saw residents with scaly skin, bruising, and marks on their arms that looked like they had been roughly handled or restrained against their will. One gentleman was in the hallway crying to go home, and no one even looked up from their screens to comfort him. Professional Misconduct: When I asked for a floor supervisor to address the lack of staff in the assisted living area, a woman eventually appeared from a storage closet with a male, adjusting her clothes in a very unprofessional manner. It turned out she was the supervisor for the unit. The lack of supervision and basic professional ethics is appalling. Management: The Executive Director comes across as very "fake." Based on my visit, it seems management is focused on appearances and salary rather than the actual safety and dignity of the seniors living there. They are permitting an environment where neglect is the standard. This is not a safe environment for the elderly. I am in the process of reporting my observations to the proper authorities (Social Services and the Ombudsman) because no one should have to live in these conditions.

The environment they create is warm, uplifting, and full of life. The staff are amazing--friendly, compassionate, loving, and truly attentive. It gives me so much peace of mind knowing my mom is in such good hands. I can sleep at night without worry because I know she's being well cared for. I especially want to recognize Nicole. She is incredibly kind and welcoming, knows everyone by name, and treats each resident with genuine love and compassion. A little background. My mother's condition has been…read moredeteriorating both physically and mentally over the last 14 months. She's gone from hospital to nursing home, back to hospital, back to nursing home and then finally to an assisted living down in Vista. It was a very nice facility very clean, and pretty accommodating but I guess my mother is not the easiest person to deal with on a daily basis. So not long after her stay began we started getting phone calls that your mother's doing this, she's doing that and that her care level is going to go up as well as our fees.Within 3 months our cost had nearly doubled due to us being nickel and dimed for every little thing. So we decided a change was necessary and we also wanted to get her closer to other family members closer to Long Beach / Los Angeles. We did have another option of a board and Care place down in Oceanside but the trips to visit meant an entire day was taken up just by the travel back and forth. We decided to take a shot and we checked out Vista del Mar. I'm thinking we made the right decision. Though it took a while for my mother to accept the move to a different style place with a little looser atmosphere and kind of less stuffy attitude. From the people we first dealt with mainly Jessica and Rebecca down to the caregivers, housekeepers and maintenance, everything that is ever brought to their attention is promptly dealt with. I'm not saying there's too many things to deal with just saying that I think I am there more than a lot of visitors and from what I see everyone is pretty much on top of things over there. As I said before my mother is not an easy person to deal with but they seem to think she's a pleasure Anyhow since she has been there she now is able to fit into her slippers and shoes which she was unable to do at the prior facility due to her feet and ankles being excessively swollen and she wasn't very Mobile on her own at that point. Now there's times I show up and she walks around her room and she even walks herself to the dining area and she's wearing her shoes because obviously her medications are being given to her on a timely basis like I'm assuming maybe they were not before at the other facility. I'm very grateful for the care that she has receiving here and I really don't have anything negative to say about the place. Add in the fact that the aforementioned people Jessica and Rebecca and some others have volunteered assistance in possibly getting us to a more affordable level through programs because even though their rates are better than most it's still difficult for us people that are on a certain budget. That just added to the attraction of trying this place out and I'm glad that we did. It also doesn't hurt that my dog and best friend Conrad has become like a mascot of the place and spends every visit visiting with a lot of the other residents every time we are out there. All in all I don't even feel like I'm going to a facility when I show up over there it's just more like somewhere where my mother lives.

Yet, we are greatly comforted in knowing that she was given the highest quality of care and comfort by the staff at HGSAL for over two and a half years. We were impressed by their friendliness and responsiveness to the needs of the residents and their unfailing compassion and devotion. The home is in excellent condition and the meals are very nutritious and food and snacks plentiful. Each resident room is cleaned twice a week. There are always various activities (games, exercise, day trips) conducted on a daily and weekly basis. We can only name some of the staff members now but this list is definitely not exhaustive. Rodrigo, Marianne, Mercedes, Polly, Larry, Avelino, Clouette, Lex, Maria, Bertha, Alda, Stephanie, many caregivers, housekeepers, kitchen staff......Peace and Blessings to you all. I originally settled on Crofton Manor because I found the staff very responsive, caring and I appreciated the spacious rooms. While Crofton Manor is an older building it is kept very clean, the shared rooms are larger and have a clever floor to ceiling closet divider which allows for more privacy than other places I visited. My dad and I both appreciate the access to patios, light and fresh air. He began living at Crofton February of 2020. Then Covid hit hard in March. After living through the last year of tremendous anxiety, and now looking back, I am very impressed with/grateful to Crofton Manor's handling of this epidemic. I have grown to trust Amalia (Director) and Claudia (Chief RN) to be fully informed, and protecting of all their residence by following CDC protocol. Its been a terribly stressful year during which Crofton has exactingly cared for its people. At last my dad had his first vaccination this month! Importantly, I need to stress how much I appreciate that anytime I call, my inquiries have been answered by a live person who cares and is competent (this has not been the case in previous residencies my father has lived)! The staff is the best, from Stephanie lead nurse to Arristeo head of maintenance, Dr. Phillip my dad's GP, the caregivers who work so hard, kitchen staff, receptionists and office management, all are great!
