During a recent vacation in Barcelona, we were admiring some of the many amazing buildings near Placa Catalunya when an older gentleman approached us and struck up a conversation with my wife and me. He told us the history of the building and asked where we were from. Upon learning we were Americans, he talked about how he and his wife had lived in New York City for 25 years decades before. We then asked what this impeccably-dressed man did in Barcelona, and he said his family had owned a leather good shop near the Placa since 1932. We told him we'd be interested in seeing it, so he led us there and began telling us more about the history of the business. Mind you, this was on July 22, in the middle of a hot summer, so there were few other customers in the store. The man turned out to be Alfonso de Aracil Solsona, the third-generation owner of the business. I told him I owed my wife an anniversary gift since she had already bought one for me, so he showed her a leather jacket/blouse that was a perfect style for her and promised to have it altered that day since we were returning to the states the next morning. Seeing my face blanche when I saw the retail price, he proceeded to discount it dramatically, so we made the purchase. The lamb's leather used in these goods is so fine and soft that it is almost hard to believe it is really leather. The clothes also emit almost none of the leather aroma which pervades leather shops in the U.S. It is truly amazing stuff. Although I was very reluctant, Sr. Solsona, having noticed how I admired a quilted men's jacket in the display window as we entered his establishment, then proceeded to make me an amazing deal on that as well. I honestly have never owned such a fine piece of clothing, and will wear it this fall and winter with great pride. Sr. Solsona then had one of his employees, a lovely lady whose name I cannot recall, personally escort us over to the nearby office to claim our VAT tax refund. Later that same day, both pieces were delivered perfectly altered to our hotel. This kind of service and personal attention to detail is something that has been long lost in department stores in the U.S. Our chance encounter with Sr. Solsona and his staff is a memory that my wife and I will always cherish fondly. read more

It had long been a dream of mine to own a kickass leather jacket. It was one I had sort of given up because nothing was quite right. I came into Solsona expecting more of the same boring designs made in sweatshops to dubious standards. Never before have I been genuinely thrilled to be proven wrong. Sr. Solsona, a dapper older gentleman and the owner, guided me around the racks, and everything was almost there but not quite. The combination of pockets didn't work out or the leather was a bad shade for my skin. Finally he said, "Don't worry, we'll make it for you." I told him I would only be in BCN a few days, and he said "It's no problem, we have a factory. It's upstairs." But there wasn't enough time, I thought, "Come back tomorrow." So he called over his tailor he took my measurements. I chose a light, buttery smooth tobacco brown leather with just the pockets I needed. For €700, it's my favorite item of clothing. read more

Back in September 2013 I bought a leather jacket from this store. It's as good as it can be, and given the company I was with, I knew I had several with me who have a good eye towards knowing this was sound construction. We met Mr. Solsona while crossing the street, and he showed us his store. A special guy, who knows the United States because he has lived in New York for several years. I took my jacket with me the next year on my Niagara Falls trip in October, and it held up very well to the water and the rain, so I know the clothing there is absolutely solid. read more

Solsana Completed Our Barcelona Vacay!! Once in a while, you unexpectedly come across a complete stranger who is genuine and you feel a connection with. Our recent trip to Barcelona brought about such a meeting. On the last afternoon of our trip, my husband and I strolled the beautiful Passeig de Gracia, the "Champs Elysees" of Barcelona. A dapper older gentleman overheard us talking about NYC and began a conversation. One topic led to another as we walked together. Mr. Solsana's life stories about his family starting a leather goods company back in 1932 were simply intriguing. Before long we were in his wholesale sample showroom. I must admit the skeptic in me wondered whether this seemingly kind informative well spoken man did this on a daily basis. Could this be his "act" to lure in potential buyers? The more we chatted about his roots, the more we bonded. We found his real life stories to be fascinating. Living in the same family home just blocks away from the business he was born into, this 80 something year old seems to live and breathe leather. He knows everything there is about the best quality, designs and craftsmanship. Selling all around the world to the top designers, I was impressed that he still attends fashion week in NY with his daughter and agent. It was a rare pleasure to meet this wonderful person and even share commonalities about family and religious holidays. Thank you Mr. Solsana and staff. It was a pleasure! I had read that you can get great deals on leather goods in Spain. So, when I saw an ad for this shop, I figured it was worth a look. I wandered around and glanced at the racks and a young girl offered me some options. She showed me a coat that was very similar to a coat I already had. I told her this and then...... he emerged....Mr. Solsano. He explained that this was his family store and finding that we were from the U.S. he told us about his NYC ties. Then he looked at me and said, "I know the coat for you." I was skeptical but he seemed a kind and intriguing gentleman. He went on into his office and re-emerged with a catalog, explaining that they had a new design that was perfect for me. He finally flipped to the page and showed me. Why, yes that is a style that I liked. He then looked at me and went to a rack and pulled a coat that was exactly my size. I tried it on and loved it but then looked at the price tag. Yikes! No, he said, don't worry about that price. Well, I kind of have to worry about it. The price he then offered was 70% off the ticketed price. Would it have been worth the original price???? Well, yeah!!.. if you had the bankroll for it!!! The quality was without question!!! Given the 70% off, the new price was kind of a no brainer for a handmade leather garment! Now he turned his attention to my wife who was not in the market for a new leather coat. Again he exclaimed he knew the perfect coat for her. He went into the racks and emerged with a navy blue fur lined leather coat that is EXACTLY the kind of style she would have picked out herself and it was EXACTLY her size!!! It was really quite uncanny!!! While my wife looked at the coat, out came a bottle of a local cherry liqueur with two glasses for us. He poured us each a glass and offered us cheers. Mr. Solsano is truly a master. Not only does he know leather making but he clearly knows people!!! Not only can he size you with a glance, he can also size up your style!!! A master artisan and salesman. Now it's quite possible we could have bartered down the price further. But honestly, I'm happy to support a hard working artisan who crafts quality and treats his customers with real respect. He referenced several times that his name was in every coat and presented his business card to show that he was the owner and noted that every coat was made in their factory on the floor above. He also quoted a few large designers he produces leather goods for but noted that the designs in this shop were all original that we would not find at those famous retailers. Our coats will remain a very cherished memory of our visit to Barcelona! read more

They have a nice selection and the sales staff have a good eye. However, they were also very aggressive. After 15 minutes in the store and trying on 3 jackets, they had wrapped up one jacket and were asking what credit card I wanted to use, when I had made no indication I was ready to purchase (this is a 1000€ jacket). Then it was frequently implied that I wasn't purchasing because I lacked confidence and masculinity. Finally, Alfons (the salesman) said, "why do you act so small, you are a big man, if you see something you like, you should buy it like a man" and finally, "I see now! I thought it was an issue of price, but I reduced the price! The issue is you, you are inactivo." For some context, this shop is in the gay neighborhood of Barcelona, the Castro, SF of Spain. And the Spanish don't say top and bottom for masculine and feminine men, they say activo and inactivo. I guess I don't meet their ideal of a man, as I left without purchasing and won't return. I suggest you avoid them altogether. read more

What a fine store! We were looking for leather jackets all over spain, nothing compares to this store. Quality of the leather, selection, colors, design all are right. Mr. Solsona honest old school man. It was a great pleasure to give him our business. Instead of one jacket we bought two for the prices we couldnt resist. Ofcourse there was bargain going on and Mr. Solsona was telling us that he gives us his cost price :). But whatever it is, the price we paid for the quality was excellent. They even treated us with some fine spanish wine. We will gladly recommend this store to all our friends. read more

The quality of the leather goods is quite high. You have to be prepared to bargain. They start out with high prices then tell you they are giving you a great deal. The older man will make you feel like you've insulted him but prepared to walk and you'll get a better price. read more
