When we moved to Salem we were looking for a few things in a church:…read more Active students ministry for our kids Opportunity for community Accepting and open attitudes And an active presence in the city We found all of those in Salem Alliance. The leadership is kind and approachable, the small groups are where you can find like-minded people in similar phases of life, and the youth ministry is thriving. As a mixed-ethnicity family, it was really nice to see a lot of other mixed families. We didn't find that at any other churches we visited. If you are looking for a welcoming place to land, we found it in Salem Alliance.

The Worship Service is different every weekend, yet consistent with the solid biblical Truth, relevant to our times. The message is given by different members of the Pastoral Team. The worship is led by a varying and inclusive group of talented members, providing worship, not performance. This is a successful church that constantly challenges itself to do more for the Kingdom, from bicycle repair ministry and refugee ministry to providing affordable advanced degrees for those who want to move into professional ministry, the best Upper Room prayer location and also a coffee outreach best in the Willamette Valley, and many other and growing ways to help Salem become a city of Peace, with facilities for other churches, community groups, and commerce to come together for the common good, and, of course, missions, missions, missions. It's a Big Church, with five services each weekend, and also has a small church feel by providing Community Groups where members can connect with each other on a weekly gathering basis.

My husband and I were invited by some friends to attend the Sunday "Picnic In The Park". Upon…read morearriving we were greeted by a bunch of very friendly people and felt very welcome. One of these people was a guy named Matt, whom we all later on learned was one of the pastors. We were led to where the food line was. The people serving were very friendly and definitely not stingy with portions. All of the meats were served piping hot, and the salads cool and tasty. There seemed to be a lot of interesting activities going on for the kids. I saw tractor rides, bouncy houses, coloring, photo booths, and even homemade ice cream! A very yummy and appreciated treat on a hot day. While sitting under the shade tree relaxing, a woman named Lori came up to us and started chatting with us. Turns out Lori is Matts wife, the guy that originally greeted us when we first arrived. A little while later Matt joined Lori as well as their middle daughter. I found all of them very genuine and personable and down to earth "humans", not "stuffy" and "snobby" like other clergy I have ran into over the years. They wound up chatting with us for about an hour, very willing to help answer some questions and share stories. Even their daughter seemed to be very well grounded, appreciative and level headed, a rare thing to find in today's teens and young adults. A little while later a Justin guy joined us to say hi. Justin was also very friendly and personable. All of these nice folks invited my husband and I back for next Sundays picnic. Never once did I feel pressured to attend a service; nothing like some places where it was "If you DON'T attend a service, you're going straight to Hell" stuff. Later on Lori came back up to me with a friend and they invited me to a womans Bible study. This was based on questions I had earlier asked Lori, not because they were trying to "recruit" me into some church going study thing. I told them I wound think about it and get back to them soon. I could not tell you what one of their services is like because I have not attended but I can say that if they indeed do practice what they preach then this may be a church I wind up regularly attending. After I attend a service I will update my ratings. I did not think it would be fair to give 5 stars without first seeing what they offered inside of the church.
