Advertised as a full service log home restoration company, my experience with John Doyle and his crew was far from it. If I could give a negative five star rating, I would. Run, like Forrest Gump, when you see them coming. I asked for an estimate in July of 2016 for a recently purchased log home. John was supposed to meet me but instead sent his daughter. She walked through and missed a lot of areas that needed addressing. He wrote the estimate using her notes, with a start time of mid August 2016 and a cost of $58500. I was given a timeline of three weeks to completion. I was guaranteed that the stench from the previous owners' pets would disappear after the corn blasting (that never happened) and the special products (turned out to be deck stain from The Home Depo) that they would use on the logs. They started on schedule and the exterior logs of the house proceeded as planned. The interior was a disaster. I hired a local general contractor to gut the basement which had not been in the contract. That was the single most important thing I did. He uncovered major damage, much of which John could have seen from outside if he'd looked. John proceeded to address these issues in a less than logical manner. For example, he "replaced a log" in the great room which he told me had been damaged by the lack of flashing on the chimney. ( In actuality, he replaced the damaged log with a piece of tongue and groove. (The new truly professional company recommended by the local GP found that the entire wall was damaged and had to be replaced. John had filled about 1/20th of the damaged area with a "special foam" that looked like the yellow foaming spray window insulation.) He did not , however, address the leak until the new "log" got wet after a rain storm. We decided to gut the house. John began full well knowing that a permit was required for this work, but did not mention it to me or apply for the permit. ( This cost me the permit cost and a fine when someone anonymously called the job in to the building department. The crew knew as well because the building inspector saw them sneak out of the back door as he announced himself at the front door.) John's crew admitted that this was the biggest job they'd been on as they proceeded to lay the sub-floor, neglecting to stagger the boards as recommended. They also lied directly to me saying that they were using Liquid Nails to glue the boards down as they went. The new company showed me the glue-less boards after they pulled them up. The wrap around deck also had issues that John addressed. He instructed his crew to patch the ledger board, below the same leaky chimney, to which the deck had once attached. He did not follow the floor box company's recommendation for repair but instead tried to sister pressure treated lumber to the floor joists. He instructed them to add additional deck joists, but he never intended to address the lack of cement footings or rotting floor boards on the deck. The building inspector condemned the deck. The original estimate covered replacing all of the mostly damaged windows. one window was ordered in the wrong orientation and a custom door was damaged when John's crew left propped it on it's side for months. He still owes me $1200 for those items that he took back when the new company discovered his error. he is refusing to return my calls and texts. I fired him the first weekend of October 2016. that Sunday night a windstorm knocked down a door his crew had leaned against the bathroom frame and broke a water pipe. My well pump worked through the night to flood my basement, containing the new windows stacked on the floor, with four inches of water. John tried to blame the break on the new company that was scheduled to work in two weeks. John flew through my initial deposit of $14625 and bgan asking for weekly progress payments of $5000 in addition to payments for windows and other supplies. In total, he was paid $68000 and did not finish one project. His website shows these beautiful homes and wonderful comments. My guess is that the pictures are all staged and the comments are written by their publicity people or by themselves. He will be served shortly for a lawsuit and I will update this page if Yelp allows me to do so. read more
