After years of searching for even a good enough fit at a decent price for a curly hair stylist, I started working with Grace at Sol Salon, and I couldn't be happier! I have thick and full, wavy and curly hair - it looks lovely when it's cut properly, and it's heavy, drooping, and overwhelming when it's not. Grace does a great job at trimming my hair every few months to remove the excess weight, but maintain the fullness and vibrancy that my hair is capable of. I'm so grateful to have finally found Grace, and will continue to work with her as long as possible. Not to mention, it's an added perk that there is a free parking lot behind the salon! If I give this place anything but 5 stars it will be a huge disservice. I have thick curly hair and have salon hopping for a long time now looking for that someone who can give me more than just a hair trim in layers. I've even been to those 'supposedly' exclusive curly hair salons that cut my pocket more than my hair ! I've been to Sol Salon earlier and never had an unpleasant experience. However this one time I wasn't entirely pleased with my haircut. The first lady who cut my hair asked me to come back if I did not like my hair cut. I took her for her word and I went back first thing next day morning. I met Grace , (also the owner) and told her about my previous evening at the salon. She offered to take care of it for me. Amazing 'Grace' literally and figuratively! She gave me an adorable adorbes cut - that's only bringing compliments my way:) She did not charge me a penny even though she spent another hour cutting my already short hair into this adorbes cut . TL;DR I'm glad that Sylvia prioritized the health of my hair, but I feel like the time and expense wasn't worth the-less-than-stellar outcome. That being said, $240 was a great price for cut + single color+ highlights, so I guess you get what you pay for + I'm glad the outcome was too subtle rather than too dramatic! Overall, I would return to her for a haircut, but not color since she seemed to lack the confidence or maybe didn't want to spend the time initially given I was her last client of the day. I consulted with Christina at Simply Glamour for an appt today, who recommended a balayage for $275 - $300 after seeing my photos, so hopefully I get what I'm looking for after spending so much in total this time! This was my first time dyeing my hair, so I brought plenty of photos, including pics of me with a few shades using a virtual try-on app. I asked to book enough time because I wasn't sure if dyeing my virgin hair would take the amount of time required for a single-process color, balayage, or something else, and what I needed for the look I wanted to achieve. I was happy when I got time with Sylvia as the last client of the day, and was ensured that time wouldn't be a problem. I arrived 10 mins late after giving a heads-up, and she was very understanding of that! The salon looked clean and well kept and I was asked to take my temp and we were both wearing masks the entire time although Sylvia's was falling past her nose a few times; I was the only client in the shop at the time and it was super quiet. I showed her what I wanted, and she expressed concern that since I had healthy hair, I might want to be careful of how light I go in one session to avoid my hair looking brassy (totally made sense to me!), so we went with a temporary color all over--my hair ended up looking the exact same. She said that this is a natural look, it would look more brown in the sun, it was too dark in the salon, and that going with a lighter and more permanent color would lead to harsh roots. At this point, while I appreciated her candor, I wasn't excited about my first-time experience and wasn't sure why Sylvia was discouraging me from the look that I wanted. After I mentioned this wasn't what I wanted, we went with a permanent dye that she said had to stay for 20 mins, she was going to rinse it off in 15, but I asked for longer--only for it to look the same again. 2.5 hours of dyeing, washing, and blowdrying 2x had gone by, so I just wanted to wrap up my appt, but Sylvia wanted to make sure that I was a happy client so we did some face framing baby lights and she did a great job with trimming my hair! I knew we were late into the appt, so didn't have time to do highlights all over and she forgot to do the face framing layers I asked for 2x, but it ended up looking like my hair being essentially the same color all over with a subtle money piece. As a first timer, I think it would've been great if colorists educated their clients on what they were doing through each step (bc I was nervous and my scalp burned after we used permanent color after washing my hair) and how to maintain the color, esp so I can say what kind of processes I've had done at my next salon appt, but I kept having to ask Sylvia about what products were used, how to care, etc. Also, I could have been wearing it incorrectly, but the salon may need capes with better coverage, because the back of my t-shirt was soaked by the end of the appt. I was surprised she rubbed my hair instead of blotting after washes since it's not good for it, but also bc the towel kept getting caught in my earrings when doing that (ouch!). read more

I went to Sol salon today for the very first time after talking to Grace this morning on the phone and hoping that it would have an opening she made it possible. Grace was friendly and kind, listen to me and checked out the photos I brought to cut my hair in layers. I wanted a cut within beautiful layers to give me more volume. It turned out Wonderful and I will be back for my future hair needs since I trust Grace and feel that she listens to what the client wants as well as adds her suggestions to come to a perfect result. Regarding parking; it is easy either on Washington Boulevard or in the back of store if there's something available plus you can get your coffee next-door at Conservatory and wait if you're early. It is hard Finding a good hair designer /stylist who you can trust and I am happy that I found a good home base now. read more

I feel really bad about leaving a negative review since I did think my stylist, Sydney, was a nice person, but I feel like I need to share. I needed to get my hair braided back for an upcoming jiu jitsu tournament. I made an appointment in advanced for the morning of my tournament and let both the receptionist and stylist know (in advanced and again when I was in the chair) what I was looking for; 2 braids to keep all my hair back and out of my face. Simple enough. I told her to do whatever style she was most comfortable with... Long story short, at the end I could feel things were loose and already falling out so I asked if she could fix it (meaning rebraid) but instead she just stuck a ton of Bobby pins in my hair. She ended up charging me $45 for half-ass, sloppy French braids! I felt annoyed and didn't have time to waste, so I paid and left. When I got home (5 minutes later), my hair was already falling out with fly aways everywhere, i.e see photos. Sydney did refund me half my money when I called to complain (which should have been the original charge anyway), but I wasted my morning there before an important competition and ended up having to rebraid my hair myself. Im sure there's good stylists here, but don't go to Sydney for braids! read more

I really wanted to like this place (It's a pretty space and right next to one of my favorite coffee shops and had good yelp reviews) but I cannot recommend it. My experience this afternoon was awful. I came in after having made an appointment over the phone. When I got there the lady who was to cut my hair dealt with me very shortly and when she saw I had long hair had a conversation with the only other stylist there as if she wanted to pass me off to her. When we sat down in the chair I told her that I wanted 6-8 inches off maximum. That I was coming in for a healthy trim and styling and that I wanted the dimension of any normal haircut but not massive layers. She promptly bunched my hair in the back and cut off about 6 inches without care and then took me to shampoo my hair. I was shocked. She then got water all down my back in the process of rinsing my hair. After she had already got me wet she told me that there was an upcharge for having long hair. I've come to understand this is not uncommon but not being transparent about this and how much of an upcharge it was robbed me of the choice as I was already getting my hair shampooed and had already had a major chunk taken off unceremoniously by the time she told me. I was quoted $65 over the phone. In the end the bill was Almost $80. This was upsetting but in my mind not a deal breaker as long as the haircut was good. When we got back to the chair to cut my hair she took maybe 5 minutes to actually do any clipping and styling. She then proceeded to start drying with a hair dryer my hair without even giving me the opportunity to see what she had done. She didn't go one layer at a time like every other hair dresser I've ever been to she just pooped it off. Then after spending most of the appointment drying my hair she had me stand up and did some final "evening out" of my hair and then promptly rushed me to check out at which point I found that what I had just been through all in all taking less than an hour was an almost $80 experience. I was so embarrassed and upset that I chose to just pay it and leave because I couldn't find it within myself to be both assertive and graceful. I was so sad and furious. I saved up this money to get a proper haircut and what I experience could have been done at super cuts for less than half the price. I want my money back honestly. I will not be coming here again. I'm a touring musician and my hair is part of my brand which I made clear to her. Now I have to go spend more money to have my hair fixed. When I go to a salon I expect that to be it. I generally don't write bad reviews, and the lady seemed generally a nice person, but she didn't seem to know what she was doing and was not open to instruction. She made me feel incredibly uncomfortable and not heard, and she ended up leaving my hair in a condition that a non professional could have done. Very bummed and not sure how I'm going to afford to fix what she did before I have to go to work again. read more

I'm so happy to have found a local salon with great stylists.  I had met Jan at the Conservatory (the coffeeshop next door) before the pandemic, when I was still driving out to Alhambra for haircuts.  When I needed one on very short notice in the fall of 2020, Grace was so kind as to squeeze me in, and she did a fabulous job.  Things were a bit hectic, so I can't give as many specifics, but she was great. I finally got my hair cut by Jan recently and was very happy with the haircut she gave me.  I really appreciate her experience and ability to work from very little guidance ('Um...long?  With layers?) to vision and create a flattering hairstyle that still looks good a couple months later and is easy to care for.  She really seemed to hear what I was saying and was great at communicating throughout.  We were still dealing with the Covid restrictions at the time, but the salon felt very safe and comfortable. In my 50+ years I have met a few who truly do not...My hair is wavy and the friend who recommended her to me has gorgeous natural curls and Jan does a fantastic job with her hair, too. Ashley Barrera gave my long curly hair a wonderful cut at Sol Salon !! My hair had grown to a ridiculous length because my masterful Vietnamese hairdresser of 20 years had gone AWOL. How could I trust anyone else? After an hour of research on yelp, I decided to try Ashley and she worked out great !! When I walked in, the salon was clean, cheerful, and chill. No pounding music or stacks of intimidating glossy magazines. Ashley was lovely. We started on time and she asked me very thorough questions about my hair, my history, and what I was looking for. She clearly was experienced and knew curly hair well. Easy to talk to and efficient. The very pleasurable wash and cut took about 40 minutes and cost me $55 ($65 minus a welcome First Timers Discount of $10, which she told me about at payment time). Sol Salon is right next door to The Conservatory (serving LA's best coffee). That whole block has a neighborhood vibe, despite being across the street from ginormous Sony Studios on Washington Blvd. Ashley told me that she cuts the hair for about four of the baristas next door ... all awesome young women who I have chatted to as they crafted my small extra hot lattes over the years. I highly recommend Grace at Sol Salon! She has been cutting my hair for over a year and always does an excellent job. She is knowledgable, professional, and has a lovely, warm personality. I've also gotten great advice from her on hair styling and tools. As I have fine and straight hair, I like to get a blunt haircut (i.e., no layers). I visited Faith for a curly haircut and balayage. What resulted was a haircut not meant for curly hair and uneven bleached layers. I did ask for a cool tone and that was beautiful but overall I was left unhappy with the finished product. It looked amazing after it was blow dried with big beautiful curls, but once worn naturally curly (which is how I normally wear my hair) it is very unflattering. At first I had a triangle hair cut but after contacting Faith, she was very willing to fix. I went in to get it fixed and one side of my head looks beautifully layered with natural curls, the other side looks like one long layer down below and then another layer at shoulder length. When worn straight, you can clearly see the harsh painting of bleach. I thought balayage was a "painted look". Anyway, not happy with this. I had a consultation with a professional hair colorist and a DevaCurl certified stylist and both people said this was done very poorly. I have an appointment w them to fix the mess I was left with and now have to pay another $300. read more

Daniela was very patient and meticulous with my very first color appointment (ever). She listened to what I wanted, she educated me and entertained all my questions, and I LOVE how my hair turned out. Okay, until I found this salon, I actually thought I would never find a salon that could turn my thick, black, coarse, bountiful hair into a edgy, but chic thing! And Grace at Sol salon did just that!!!!! In all the cities I've been to, I have never once felt excited or satisfied about my haircut and not even with pictures were some of them able to give me the cut I hoped it would be! And then just like that I find someone at walking distance to my place! And this was last minute appointment I got due to a cancellation and due to some miscommunication on my part, the salon thought they could fit me into a 45 minute slot!
