As you stand in front of the building and face the front door, a sculpture of a sailor stands to the right of the door and a sculpture of a soldier stands to the left. Memorial Hall was built in 1872 to honor the memory of the 90 Northampton residents who perished during the Civil War. The building has served as a library and museum over the years. The soldier and sailor are dressed in period uniform. The soldier holds his rifle vertically and the sailor holds a telescope in his right hand. It's a very cool monument -you get the feeling that the soldier and sailor are standing guard outside of the building -ever vigilant and ever dutiful.

I make that recommendation due to the lack of steep hills, variety of sights and wildlife. It is full of giant rock formations and it has a nice pond where painted turtle sightings are super common. I discovered Gaylord Memorial Library about two summers too late into college, but I was happy to…read morehave found it nonetheless. They have an incredible collection of leisure books be they fiction or non-fiction. They have an entire floor in the basement dedicated for children. Their movie collection is also impressive (and I personally found it more rewarding than the library for Mount Holyoke College). If only I had known earlier... The only caveat to Gaylord is its limited hours. They are only open Thursday 1:00 pm -8:00 pm, Friday 10:00 am - 5:00 pm and Saturday 10:00 am - 12:00 pm so that maybe a little inconvenient. However, it is mostly run by volunteers and with a limited budget, I guess there is nothing much to be done. But it is really very easy to get a free membership and just drop by every now and then to pick up some good reads. This place also has weekly/monthly events for interested locals both young and old. They also have workshops for origami, knitting, etc. and various book clubs and teas. I still remember running by the library on warm summer afternoon and browsing through the shelves of romantic novels. So, I am putting this word out there mostly for my sisters in Mount Holyoke, and also the residents of the area: if you have not visited Gaylord library, you are missing out on a very good part of South Hadley.
