I had a heck of a time picking the Sofitel over another (local) hotel for a work trip. I finally settled on the Sofitel due to location and the fact that they had a gym (plus, I could easily get there on public transportation).
I really enjoyed the hotel, though I think that there are a few kinks...
- Rooms are small, but very clean. They are nicely done, so they are typical "Sofitel" in terms of furnishings/decor/staff and also typical "European" in terms of room size.
- The restaurant for breakfast is VERY pricey. The food is pretty good, but for 24 EUR, you can probably find a local spot that will make you just as happy.
- The concierge (golden key, yes he is!) is wonderful. His restaurant recommendations were clearly made with thought versus the 'old standby' that they send everyone to. I specifically requested "local" and "non-touristy" and that's what I got. Great work!
- The gym, while nice, is pretty small and I can't figure out how to get those darn windows open to get to the balcony!
- Location can't be beat! I managed to get there by taking the bus from the airport and then the tram (thanks to some very nice locals...), and it was just a block from the tram stop and one of the main squares.
- The location ISN'T the petite France...it is not as touristy, though I liked that I could get anywhere by foot and didn't have to push through throngs of tourists.
- Generally, the staff was very nice, but for some reason, I was refused our corporate rate, though the others I traveled with were given the rate...very strange...especially as they booked after me.
- The room cleaning was generally done nicely and the turndown was ok, but one day, my room didn't get cleaned at all, and I had to call around 5pm to get it cleaned, and another night, I didn't get the turn down. So, somewhat hit or miss.
- Their outdoor patio (if it's not raining) is a lovely spot to drink or dine.
Generally, great hotel if you're in Strasbourg. If you want to be in the 'picturesque; part of town, you can stay closer to the water (though there is a lovely church in the square in front of the sofitel), however, I liked the Sofitel quite a bit. read more
