McKenna is the most incompetent doctor I have ever seen. I was 16 years old when I saw him, I was losing my hair and had severe itching on my scalp. He misdiagnosed me with having dissecting cellulitis, prescribed me strong topical steroids and literally asked me "what do you do for a living, besides scratch your head?" I later learned I had a fungal infection and his misdiagnosis caused the situation to spread and now I am 35 years old with permanent hair loss. Yeah, I still think of this 19 years later. I can't speak to their other areas of practice, but in terms of acne treatment, I'm not a fan. I've been going here for nearly 4 years, and my acne has barely improved. We've tried every medicine and cream combination under the sun. I know acne can be tricky, but isn't that what they're trained for? They never make any suggestions for me outside of their prescribed products (i.e. nothing about eating healthier, sleeping more, etc.). They only seem to care about getting me to buy their (very expensive) skincare line. It always feels like the nurses and doctor are in a rush to get me out of the room and never really listen to what I have to say. They're always running late for appointments, even when I show up early. As soon as I graduate college and am on my own insurance, I'm finding a new dermatologist. read more

After 15 years and three other dermatologist, my rare skin cancer was finally diagnosed by Carl Söderström. It is now under control. His practice in Peoria is the only one in the area that has the machine that produces the ultraviolet rays that I need to keep my skin cancer under control. STAY AWAY ! I am normally a positive person. My experience with this provider was very poor on the whole. I had a growth removed, their charges were higher than allowed by my provider. The day it was done-they scheduled a follow up visit for several weeks later. I heard nothing about the results of the piece that was taken & sent to THEIR LAB! I called after a week & a half to ask " Cancer or Not?" The answer, "Sorry that is why we scheduled a follow up visit--to give you results!" I maintain that this is very unacceptable! To make a "Concerned Patient" wait to hear--even at least a "No Cancer" result--is cruel & uncaring. I am all healed up- THEY KNOW AFTER 1 WEEK THAT IT IS NOT CANCER- But THEY were going to wait till the FOLLOW-UP Appointment (for which I & my insurance will be charged)---THEY make me wait-- TO HEAR THE GOOD NEWS ( No Cancer ) until AFTER I AM HEALED UP. I told their office that this was cruel & unnecessary! I should have been contacted- AS SOON AS THE GOOD RESULTS CAME BACK -TO RELIEVE MY MIND!! They assured me THIS is THEIR REGULAR PROCEDURE- SO THE PATIENT WORRIES-- & gets CHARGED FOR A TOTALLY UNNECESSARY APT. WHERE THEY also offer " FOLLOW-UP CARE"-- Namely--- "OH YOU DON'T like the scar- Guess What--WE can schedule a Laser Treatment to improve it !! ". That's handy $$$. Both doctors and all nursing staff have been friendly, accommodating, knowledgeable and beyond helpful in answering my questions. I love the staff in the back behind the receptionist desk. However, when checking in and receiving care and consideration at the front desk, it's completely opposite. I understand it can be difficult at the front desk. I've worked at a not-for-profit, checking in clients whom are from all different backgrounds or financial situations. However, I felt judged and treated less-than other clients that may potentially walk-in for service. This was my personal impression from the women working at the front desk. First impressions are important, and the clients may need some discrimination courses like Starbucks employees. read more

The nurses are amazing! I was in a couple of weeks ago, and I meant to write this review then, but got busy. The front desk girl's seemed to have a lot of drama going on. The girls at the front desk just weren't very personable or friendly. When I checked out, the music was loud, the blond girl was more interested in eating than helping me. So I went to the next desk. My wife went to Soderstrom to get 2 small moles removed. Before we agreed to anything, I asked repeatedly how much the procedure would cost, and was only told, "Well, it depends on a lot of things..." I do understand that the exact cost we pay depends on our insurance carrier, but at least you would think that they could provide an "average" cost which they use for billing the procedure. (Does a cashier at your grocery store tell say "Sorry, I can't even guess what your chips will cost until after you buy them..."?) During the procedure, the doctor was literally in the room for about 90 seconds. The moles were sent to a lab without our approval, or without any discussion about how much cost it would be. After it was all said and done, were were charged with a $635 bill (Over $1100 before insurance adjustments). This is absolutely ridiculous in my opinion, but we had to pay it. At the end of the day, I worked 40 hours this week so some rich gentleman could come spend 90 seconds of his precious time with us. Great value... SHOP AROUND. read more

I have nothing but good things to say about the dermatology office here. I moved here in the middle of my Accutane treatment and they were very accommodating (which I imagine can be very difficult with a treatment like that). My complaint is the spa side of things. I come in here once a month for laser hair removal treatment (which is fairly expensive!!) and I'm basically ignored. I'm the last person to be helped in the lobby and I've never once been offered anything to drink, while I see other women being offered tea and water. I realize I am not a typical Peoria Heights looking mother of two with her husband's Caterpillar money, but I'm pretty sure my money is just as good as theirs. The SUPER pretentious staff in this office look me up and down every time I walk in the door. Unfortunately this is the only place in the area I trust for this kind of treatment, but if you have the option, I'd recommend going elsewhere. P. S. My laser technician is great and the treatment is great (albeit more expensive than I've seen it elsewhere) but I have no complaints about the actual procedure. UPDATE: My opinion has not changed. There is no doctor that I'm waiting for. My appointment with the esthetician was at 9:15 and I expect that to be honored. I'm writing this at 9:40. I have heard other people walk by and ask if they know if anyone is taking care of me. This place is a joke! In the future, I'll just be driving up to Chicago for any sort of cosmetic procedure because it'll probably less of a hassle than coming here. read more

I finally asked the receptionist what was going on and she said the dr was running a little behind. 45 minutes (that's just so far) is not a little late, it's ridiculous. Would never come here again. In the reality... this skin institute has: - long period of waiting time in the lobby! -Long waiting time in the small office before doctor arrives. - When you set up an appointment, you ask to be seen by a doctor; however, instead, you got either PA or DO. By phone, they promised to be seen by Doctor dermatologist M.D. - The employees/ staff never wash their hands before procedures. - The medical personnel never uses aseptic technique such as alcohol wipes before procedure. - The medical staff never explains the procedure itself before starting it. - The medical staff always in hurry to get rid of you as soon as possible from the office. - Their medical staff ( especially nurses) has bad attitude toward the patients. - How much and for what you will be billed us always a surprise for you. - I agree with the many previous replies about not giving any recommendations due to treatment options and alternatives. You must expect to be prescribed either antibiotic or hormonal medications. Do not wait or ask about other options! Remember! They are waiting you to leave..... and obviously pay Your bill!!!! Dr. Lomax lies about results and does nothing to correct their mistakes and oversites. "Lies" was a bit harsh, sorry. Update: I was contacted by Soderstrom's head of nursing and had a meeting with Dr. Soderstrom. I was told some of the things that I am unhappy with were unpredictable and some are common. I was offered a corrective procedure, Smartlipo, to deal with my main complaint at a discount, according to their normal fees. I am still considering accepting the offer, but have way too many things I have to deal with in the short term. I would recommend them over the other options in the area, but do your homework on the procedure you want done and try not to have an unrealistic expectation. Consider if you can live with the worse case scenario results. Some times it doesn't turn out the way you pictured it in your mind or how it is depicted on all the web sites. You have to dig deep to find the horror stories so dig for the whole truth before going under the knife. read more

AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS! They are completely incompetent and a waste of money. Every blood test that you receive from them will be riddled with mistakes so that they can skew the blood test information in order to have you spend more money with them. I will give you better medical advise with this statement than they will provide: if it is wet, make it dry. If it is dry, make it wet. There you go- I just saved you $350. They gave us back the blood test (2 weeks after it was taken and only because we called and requested it) and they said that the K (potassium) was high. Upon researching, we discovered that it was so high we needed to go to the emergency room. After another $1500 bill from the hospital, we learned that it I a laughing joke in the medical community of Peoria that this institute is a complete joke and has no idea what it is doing. Before even doing a test, the ER doctor said, "you received it from them? I am sure you are fine." Save yourself some money and just go to one of the kiosks in the mall and buy yourself some proactive. read more

I went to the Davenport office with a lesion on my nose that wouldn't heal so I knew I had skin cancer. I waited over 45 minutes in the lobby and another 15 after telling the nurse my issue. When the doctor looked at it he wanted to do a biopsy...no wonder they run behind! I got the results 2 weeks later and my surgery was scheduled for another 3 1/2 weeks later, the soonest available and I had to go to Peoria. I had the MOHS procedure done by one doctor and then waited for a plastic surgeon. The doctor who removed the squamous lesion was quick and efficient. However, I am not at all pleased with my plastic surgeon, Dr. Lomax. His nurse, who happens to be Dr. Haye's wife, showed me her nose and told me that she had the same procedure done, you couldn't tell she had anything done. So in comes Dr. Lomax and he's grumpy because it's 12:30 and he wasn't supposed to be there until 3:30. Then he cuts into my nose and his cell phone goes off, AND HE TAKES THE CALL! I hear a one sided conversation with his wife that takes several minutes. Then he hangs up, picks up the scalpel and tells me the whole story. I'm sorry, but I'm the patient not the therapist! He didn't cover my eyes so I get to see everything, bloody instruments and gauze, needles and the stitching. I tell him that I am a very public figure because at this point I am very concerned about his focus on my nose. He asks me "What makes you so special?" I tell him that I'm a realtor and I manage a large office in Davenport and that I do a lot of volunteer work including being chairman of the DeWitt Chamber and Development Company. He berates me and wants to know why I think I'm so good as a realtor. This was very uncomfortable and stressful. I should have been calmed and assured during my surgery. As if that wasn't enough Dr. Lomax tells me that I will have a defect, "But that's ok, you can come back and we can fix that." Are you kidding me? He is a plastic surgeon, why would he not do it right the first time instead of me making me come back a second time...at my expense?!? My cancer is gone, but my nose looks terrible. I'm getting a second opinion from a plastic surgeon. I wish I would have read more reviews before going to Soderstrom, I hope this helps someone. read more

I went here twice for laser tattoo removal treatments. I have paid over $500 for a black and turquoise tattoo to be lightened some so that I can cover it (that was the goal anyway). The consultation is $49 and each laser treatment is $240. They take about 3 minutes each! Then they make you buy this $30 salve that is literally Vaseline in their own packaging. There's also BLT cream that is supposed to numb the area before the laser, which does not work at all. After all this money spent, my tattoo is just as dark as it ever was. I am going to go ahead and get it covered with something really dark before I give them anymore money. It's disappointing, to say the least, that I gave all this money to them for literally nothing. read more

I am now an ex-patient of the Soderstrom Skin Clinic in NE Normal. On 12-31-13 I contacted them to get a prescription written that I desperately need before we go back to Birmingham, Al. to visit a son who just had brain surgery. Dealing with them is unbelievable. They have no regularly scheduled office days nor hours in Normal and our charts are maintained in Morton, IL. After many calls, promises to call back, and incorrect phone tape messages, I figured out they closed at noon that day even though their phone message indicating they were open till 5:00. I immediately called on 1-2-14 and this is what I learned. Yes, they know they have problems with their Normal, IL operation, the nurse put your prescription in the mail on 12-31-13 (and failed to call me to tell me that), sorry the nurse didn't call you back, and oh, by the way, we do NOT call/fax prescriptions to your insurance company because "those insurance companies are so hard to work with." Even after explaining my situation, it was "our policy is to always give the patient a paper prescription." Their lack of compassion and empathy is astounding. They truly are NOT prepared to handle patients in Normal, IL and should be forced to close. If you are a patient at this facility, God help you. Ed B. read more

Went to see Dr. Michael Hayes for a rash on my hand and a spot on my ankle. Gave the nurse all the information and she looked at the areas. The doctor came in, shook my hand and she gave him my information. He then gave her a list of things to do/say to me then said "we'll get things better" then walked out of the room. He did not look at the areas at all. The nurse seemed to have done the diagnosis and he accepted it. She then told me she was going to give me a shot. I had no idea what it was for because the doctor didn't tell me. What a joke! What an awful way to do your job as a doctor. I will never go back! read more

Not impressed. Basic pre cancer skin spots that I've been dealing with for over 25 years. I've gone to other dermatologists and the removal procedure is simple and straightforward. At Soderstrom they've never been able to get the spot with the first treatment, the current spot is on it's 3rd round. The doctors don't seem to listen to me when I try to explain the history, what's worked in the past. Sure they have a nice facility, paid for by the clients that have to go back repeatedly for the same treatment. I'd hate to see how they handled a more serious skin issue. read more

Avoid at all costs. Dr. Soderstrom was the worst experience ever. Waited an hour to see him, nurse really nice, but dr said five words to me. He manhandled me during a mole check - it was 4:30 and he clearly wanted to be somewhere else. He loomed over me with a needle and gave me no explanation of what he was doing at all until I demanded one. He lost the path specimen in my hair. He didn't do all the moles that were suspicious in one appointment- he draws it out over multiple appointments to milk insurance money. They don't call with path results unless it's melanoma- you have to return weeks later to be told in person at another office visit. I had him look at a troublesome surgical scar. He sold me a $50 tube of something I can't even use - the next day, that scar was deemed badly infected by the dr. who did the surgery. So a guy who specializes in scars doesn't even know a raging infection when he sees one. They also sold me a tube of antibiotic ointment for $12 that I would have paid $3 for at Walgreens. The practice is a money making mill, and Soderstrom has the personality of pea gravel. He needs to retire to Boca. I won't ever set foot in there again. read more
