While agricultural inspectors are not law enforcement and can not arrest, they can detain until actual law enforcement arrives. Protect your rights. THE SETUP ..Except....this time around as I approached the station, Mr. Inspector just looked me full on, smiled, and said, "You're good. Have a nice day!" I was almost disappointed because I DID have some unopened bottles of "Angry Orchard Hard Cider" in the cooler in the trunk with me. But I guess they are really looking for bigger fish to fry, and probably have a set profile of the kind of vehicle and the kind (of looking) driver that will raise red flags. But otherwise, seriously - why even bother with a check point? HUBRIS? As big an apple producer that Washington State is, I didn't see any checkpoints at the border of Washington state as I was going up from Oregon or coming back from Idaho asking me if I was carrying any apples - which I WAS (I just ate them by the time I hit my return leg to California. So is it just ego that California has these checkpoints? THE LOWDOWN I respect whatever regulations are being followed here, but I am NOT seeing the value in these stations.

I phoned the Yreka police department and spoke with a very polite and professional female officer who dispatched a police officer to check on him. Not even five minutes later the police officer called me and said he had spoken with my brother's neighbor who told him that she had seen him leave daily early in the morning. What a relief!!! I called back to the Police Dept to thank them for their prompt and professional help and wanted to buy them a pizza to show my appreciation. She said that they could not accept gifts and politely thanked me for the offer. I would send them a pizza anyway but I don't want to challenge their policy and get anyone in trouble. After a sleepless night (my husband is an author and all his work was on that computer) we tried calling the next morning and the phones were down so my next move was to call Yreka PD. Kelly, who took my call and confirmed the phone lines were down at the restaurant, sent an officer down there (sorry I forgot his name) who took possession of the laptop and immediately called us back. I was then connected with Janene in lost & found/claims and we arranged to have the laptop shipped to us through Fed Ex and it arrived safely the next day. We can't thank the quick thinking and caring staff of BBD and Yreka PD enough! Oh, and the food at BBD is really good too! It's so good, you'll end up forgetting what you brought in with you!
