AVOID THIS POST OFFICE IF YOU REQUIRE COUNTER SERVICE!…read more I needed my girlfriend to send me some really tiny screws. I send her a self addressed envelope with postage and tracking paid for $.64. It was going to weight less than .4oz in a regular letter size white envelope. This postage would have covered for the tracking and First Class mail for that weight. Unfortunately, she had to get some stamps too. When the clerk at the counter saw the envelope she immediately told my girlfriend that it is wrong. The clerk said that it must be send via Certified if you needed tracking. However, even on USPS's own website, you can buy First Class stamp with tracking for additional $.23 or at the counter for $1.05. The worker there up-sold her to Certified Mail that cost $3.45+. My girlfriend didn't know better and bought it. I found out, because I ended up having to go to pick it up at my local post office; had to take 2hrs off work. It now requires a signature. I was livid! I ended up started a complaint against this post office. I got a phone call back. I don't blame the clerk, but I blame the management there because the clerk told me "We were supposed to sell Certified Mail when we see tracking numbers stuck to the letter" DO NOT GO HERE! THEY ARE ILL ADVICED AND UNDER TRAINED!

If you are on a road trip take a couple minutes and check it out. Yet, don't go out of your way as the town is pretty small yet they do have a great BBQ joint too!

It's clear that this is a leftover from better days in Cairo, a city that has fallen into deep disrepair like a shopping mall with no tenants. The outside is stunning with well kept grounds including the small gazebo and the brick paths. Even if it's closed for the day, it's still well worth a good walk around. Friday afternoon was a perfect time for walking the square in New Madrid and taking in the…read morecourthouse that anchors the center of town, a solid mid-century government building with clean brick lines, a Classical Greek Revival building completed in 1919 and designed by H.G. Clymer of Saint Louis. The brick and stone facade sits on landscaped grounds and presents a formal east portico with tall Ionic columns, each topped with the distinctive cotton bill ornamentation that gives the otherwise classical design a local touch. At that hour, the square was quiet and the building felt grounded in its space and the warm afternoon light made the porcelain brick exterior look more inviting that I would expect from an early twentieth century civic structure. Circling the exterior gives you a good sense of how the courthouse functions today with its compact footprint and straightforward public entrances and stepping inside through security (no cameras) reveals the central rotunda rising to a stained glass skylight with interlocking vines and red roses, a surprisingly ornate interior feature for a courthouse of this era. Even though it is not one of Missouri's more elaborate county seats, the building carries that steady everyday importance that comes from being the center of county business, from court hearings to records. Visiting during the day lets you appreciate the architecture, the history and the way the courthouse has served New Madrid County for more than a century. All the others are just the mounds with their accompanying history explained. This is the first one I've been to that goes above and beyond just seeing a grassy mound and actually has a fully excavated, and protected site within it. I find this fascinating. This type of historical location is only as exciting as the person visiting it wants to make it. Having this extra layer of dirt removed to actually see what's under one of these mounds is much more gratifying. In any event, I think it's important to take a moment and imagine life at the time the mound was created almost 1000 years ago and how different it is from what we experience today, standing in the same spot. This is an excellent site with great documentation and a very friendly and helpful staff. Definitely worth taking an hour out of your day if you're in the area to stop by and experience this place.

This marker on the walkway at the New Madrid County Courthouse commemorates the judge, senator and…read morePresident of the United States. I had visited the Truman Library in Independence a few weeks ago so this was especially interesting. The marker reads, "Harry S. Truman delivered campaign speeches at the Court House during his senate campaigns in 1934 and 1940. The 1934 campaign was open in southeast Missouri and New Madrid was one of the early campaign stops. In his 1934 speech Truman developed the themes that would later position him as a leader of the Democratic Party, championing the farmers, workers and the "New Deal" policies of the Roosevelt Administration. The 1940 campaign speech declared that national defense would be his top priority. Truman's second senate nomination was supported by New Madrid County Prosecuting Attorney J.V. Conran, who proved to be a strong ally in that very close Senate primary race. "I am deeply affected that the good people of a part of Missouri most remote from my home town did me such a singular honor," Truman said." The marker does not have a number. It was erected in 2015 by New Madrid County. There is plenty of parking nearby. [Review 1105 of 2026 - 588 in Missouri - 26284 overall]
