Good folks working flat out as hard as they can here. We were so grateful for the courtesy and competence we received. SSA was under-resourced before these stupid DOGE cuts and it's clearly going to be even harder as time goes on, but the commitment was real. IMPORTANT: Make an appointment and bring the needed documents (photo ID, death certificates, marriage certificates; whatever your situation requires). We had to wait weeks, but the appointment meant we waited 15 minutes past our appointment time (fine) and had the replacement document we needed in 5 minutes (amazing! FIVE minutes! Super great worker; politely served us and was calling the next person as we left our chairs at her window). SSA does great and vital work and the missing star was stolen by DOGE. read more

I received professional, thorough, and personable service from the Santa Rosa Social Security representative I spoke with this morning. I had followed the recommendation to file for Social Security benefits online and was informed that my application was being handled by the Richmond field office. However, despite the fact that one reads that the application will take 2-4 weeks, after 6 weeks I had no communication from them. I finally called my local office in Santa Rosa. The representative took the initiative to transfer my application to her office, informed me of my benefit amount, and the upcoming date of direct deposit. I waited just 10 minutes on the phone. Overall, I am impressed and pleasantly surprised. Thank you. read more

Went here to get a replacement social security card as I misplaced mine. The room will filled at 11:00 am and there were some people standing although a few seats were available. When you enter, a security guard asks if you have any guns of knives. If you're carrying a back pack or purse, he will inspect it. After passing security, you have to check in at one of the 2 kiosks which asks you to enter your social security number. It prints out a numbered ticket. The wait isn't nearly as bad as it looks. They have several windows in the front and several more down a hallway in the rear. When numbers are called over the P.A. system, they are also displayed on the flat screen panel. There were some no-shows when numbers were announced and some numbers called includes entire families or couples, so it went fairly fast. I was able to see someone in about an hour which is much faster than the Santa Rosa DMV (2 hours on average). read more

Social Security should realize they work for the people. They have many disabled that come to the office. Even some who don't do internet Recently they changed rules to get into office...had to have appt. This is fine, but there was only a tiny sign on the door. My significant other, who is on hospice, and uses a walker. Showed up at 7am in the rain to wait 2 hours to get in. The security guard was RUDE and told the line they should have read the tiny sign How about a BIG sign! How about the courtesy of coming out early and letting people know! Common! Got here at noon on a Monday in the middle of the month. The parking lot is packed no handicapped spots open. I find a spot to park and get my motorized mobility scooter out then have to wait to use the narrow sidewalk while an inebriated or crazy person uses the entire thing. Finally got inside to see all 43 seats filled and people standing everywhere. The security guard was pleasant and helpful. The electronic self service check in was in working order but ran at a speed faster than I could respond. If I didn't need to be here I'd NEVER come here again. This place is awful. Right when you walk in you check in on a computer and get a number that is supposed to "root you to a specialist" but it didn't ask why I was here! Then people would get helped b4 me who came after me. Then after waiting an hour my number is finally called just to be checked in AGAIN this time they actually asked why I was here. Then they told me to sit back down and wait for my name to be called. It's now been almost two hours and I'm about to leave... Horrible experience with the office. I was applying for Medicare.First, I have been told to wait for the call from them. When it didn't happened, they told me that my T-Mobile provider filters call so they couldn't reach me. I had to go to the office, waiting three hours before I was seen. Then I was told I need two missing documents. The agent, woman, was quite unfriendly and when she asked me if I am married and I replied yes, she asked my husbands phone number and told me, that she will call him and ask him a few questions regarding me...Then the next time, waiting another three hours, I brought two missing documents. I didn't apply for plan B of Medicare and I have a written proof of it, which is sign by the agent so eager to check on me with my husband. However, I just received a letter, that I am fully enrolled in Medicare including plan B which will be 164 dollars per month. I wonder, why something, so simple as enrollment in Medicare became such un unpleasant experience on borderline of insult? read more

This has got to be the most discriminating place I have ever encountered in my life. Went in for documentation for my disabled sister who is brain damaged from a bicycle accident. Because I missed my call number by seconds for going to the car to check on my disabled sister, this very rude, hostile, and verbally discriminating window clerk named Dean, refused to provide the documents I waited over an hour for. She publicly chastised me for checking on my disabled 66 yr old sister, and when I literally begged for the documents, she had the federal security guard escort me out, while he was apologizing for Dean's hostile behavior. Won't let me make an appointment, completely wasted my lunch break... now I'm starving and in a bad mood, all so I could get information on an insane "over payment" bill they sent my recently passed mother. This place is a massive rat race. Tons of people when you walk in and your lucky to snag a place to sit. I walked in and had the door locked on me during business hours due to a high volume of customers but the guard let me in as soon as someone left. As long as you are organized with what you need it's a pretty painless process. Make sure to come on a day when your free because it is not a quick in and out process. However I was able to get what I needed done the same day. They do not take appointments so there is no way to avoid the crowds. read more

My spouse and I had to go into the office to apply for Medicare and we were expecting the worst, so we packed our iPads, downloaded some books, and expected to wait until hell froze over. At first glance, I was still set up to think that this was going to be very bad. A security Guard checks backpacks and purses, there are rows and rows of chairs, mostly filled, and a wall of numbered windows behind which sit the staff. It evokes scenes from TV crime shows where visitors wait to speak to prisoners through a window. After being sure that we were not carrying any contraband, We checked in at a kiosk and received a number. Numbers are then called on the loudspeaker and appear on a monitor. Our number was called quickly, the agent was extremely efficient and helpful and we were in and out of there in less than 40 minutes. I would have given an additional star had we been able to make an appointment. We did check the posted graphs online that show peak and low visitor volumes and hit it just right. read more
