It asks you to imagine an educational institution that disappeared from the landscape long ago, leaving only this quiet plaque to hint at the classrooms, ambitions, and daily routines that once filled the spot. The marker reads, "Littleton College. Chartered in 1883 as Central Institute and in 1887 as Littleton Female College. Burned 1919. Was located here." It is marker number E-28 and it was erected in 1940 by the State Historical Commission. The school was Methodist‑affiliated, created by local leaders for the intellectual, moral, and religious education of young women. Reverend James Manley Rhodes served as its guiding figure, returning in 1889 to expand the campus after briefly leaving for another post. The college offered a two year curriculum in subjects ranging from chemistry and physics to languages and history, and by 1908 it enrolled hundreds of students from across the South and beyond. A devastating fire in January 1919 destroyed most of the buildings, and with Rhodes unable to rebuild, the institution closed. [Review 55 of 2026 - 4534 in North Carolina - 25245 overall]

Known for his alliance with John C. Calhoun and the "War Hawks" during the War of 1812, Alston also held a seat on the powerful Ways and Means Committee. In state politics, he advocated for internal improvements, banking reform, and investigated financial misconduct. The county seat, originally called Northampton Courthouse, was renamed Jackson in 1823 to honor Andrew Jackson, then a national hero and soon-to-be president. Before European settlement, the region was home to the Tuscarora and Meherrin tribes. As settlers arrived--primarily English, Scotch-Irish, Scottish, and French Huguenots--many Native Americans were displaced. The Roanoke River, which winds through the county, served as a vital trade route and attracted immigrants with its fertile soil. The historic courthouse was completed in 1858 and is a classic example of the Green Revival design. Its temple-form design faces south and features a commanding prostyle tetrastyle portico supported by fluted Ionic columns. These columns, resting on substantial pedestals that rise from the high foundation, lend the building a monumental presence. The current modern courthouse was completed between 2022 and 2024 and stands a short distance from the historic 1858 Greek Revival Courthouse. They share the address. It is a modern two-story building composed of red brick, glass, and concrete, with a flat roofline and clean, geometric lines. Inside, the courthouse houses both the County Superior Court and County District Court for the 6th Judicial District, which includes neighboring Bertie, Halifax, and Hertford counties. Halifax County was formed in 1758 from Edgecombe County, it was named for George Montague-Dunk, the…read more2nd Earl of Halifax, who served as president of the British Board of Trade and Plantations. Before European settlement, the region was home to the Tuscarora people, whose presence shaped the early landscape until they were displaced by colonial expansion. Halifax County's most enduring claim to fame is the Halifax Resolves, adopted on April 12, 1776. This bold declaration empowered North Carolina's delegates to the Continental Congress to join other colonies in seeking independence from Britain. It was the first official action by any colony calling for independence, earning Halifax the motto "First in Freedom." That said, the Mecklenburg Resolves were adopted on May 31, 1775 in Charlotte North Carolina and were a precursor to the Halifax Resolves of 1776 and the Declaration of Independence itself. The current courthouse, located at 44 King Street in the town of Halifax, was built between 1909 and 1910 and stands as the third courthouse on that site. It is a striking example of Classical Revival style, with Late Victorian influences woven into its detailing. The building's most commanding feature is its tetrastyle Corinthian portico--four stately columns supporting a pedimented entrance that evokes the grandeur of ancient Rome. Crowning the structure is a two-stage cupola. Inside is a central hallway with high ceilings and wide corridors, designed to accommodate both foot traffic and the ceremonial weight of legal proceedings. The main courtroom is the architectural centerpiece. It features a raised judge's bench framed by classical pilasters and a decorative entablature, reinforcing the authority of the judicial process. The jury box and spectator seating are arranged with clear sightlines. [Review 927 of 2025 - 4331 in North Carolina - 24483 overall]

The landscape around it is open and still, the sort of place where history feels close enough to touch. It honors a 19th century politician whose influence reached far beyond these fields, yet whose beginnings were rooted in this very stretch of countryside. The marker offers a brief pause in the drive, inviting you to step out, read a few lines, and imagine how someone from such a quiet corner of the state rose to shape public life on a much larger stage. The marker has the same text on both sides. It reads, "Congressman, 1791-1815. Speaker of U.S. House, 1801-1807. Later U.S. Senator. His home site and grave, 4 miles Northwest." It is marker number E-2 and it was erected in 2016 by the North Carolina Office of Archives and History. There is more information online. Macon was known for championing the agricultural and social priorities of his home state. His long career included service in the State Senate, twenty-four years in the U.S. House with a term as Speaker, and more than a decade in the U.S. Senate, all shaped by his strict anti‑federalist views and defense of states' rights and slavery. After retiring to his Warren County plantation, Buck Spring, he remained admired by contemporaries such as Jefferson, Jackson, and Monroe for his blunt and uncompromising political philosophy. He was an outspoken critic against the Alien and Sedition acts of 1798. His legacy endures in the places named for him and in the imprint he left on Southern political thought. Fort Macon; Macon County; Macon, Georgia; and Virginia's Randolph-Macon College were named in his honor. [Review 56 of 2026 - 4535 in North Carolina - 25246 overall]
