I just signed up to start my social security retirement and I was dreading the appointment because its something I know very little about. They had a woman named Criselda who walked me through the whole experience and she explained everything clearly to me and sometimes more than once. She went over all the questions and would ask me if I understood which I did after her patient explanations. Soon a half hour was over and I had my notes and we had finished the sign up process. Criselda should be an employee who teaches others how to help new people signing up. I will be glad to speak to her superior to let them know what a wonderful employee they have. Okay, I had no idea what to expect but kept my expectations low. When I walked in a guard asked me if I had weapons or pepper spray & then searched my handbag. Not exactly a stellar beginning but he was respectful & helpful. The lobby was full so I settled in for a long wait. But the place seemed to be fully staffed & things went very quickly. I had possibly the funniest staffer help me. She was friendly & we had a couple good laughs. I basically brought every form of ID I have and had no issues with her accepting & processing my name change request. I do appreciate that they make sure we are all safe though being asked if I was carrying a concealed weapon was certainly a surprise. I actually enjoyed my experience! Nice job guys. read more

The service at this office is the WORST. First of all, there seems to always be only one person working. And this one person - the African American lady - is simply HORRIBLE! She patronizes people, especially Latinos, and likes to argue every small, random point! I have had 4 encounters with her, and each time, it has been obvious that she is not there to help. I am giving it two stars only because there are several people there that were extremely nice and sympathetic.I brought in all my PERS retirement info to see if I could afford to retire. I was working at the time and receiving a Widow's Benefit. I was not advised, either verbally or on paper, (as it should be), that I would lose my Widows benefit once I retired. Eight months later I got a letter saying not only was I losing that $600/mo Widows Benefit, but I OWED them over $5000.00 for overpayment. After a lot of tears and explanations, I accepted the error, and they set up a payment system for my SS benefit ($242.00/mo) $135.00 to go to Medicare Part B and the remainder to my overpayment bill. After a few years went by I called to see my balance owed. They said I still owed about $2000.00...sounded right to me, BUT that I also owed $3000.00 in back Medicare. I called Medicare and they said no payments were due...called back...they kept insisting. I said YOU HAVE BEEN PAYING THEM...they can't have it both ways, if ALL my benefit was going to the overpayment, I would be paid off. They said I had to come in after they reviewed it. I did But MS. Wycoff made a huge error, kept insisting that is what the computer said, and I kept saying please just do the math!!! I tried to show her on my calculator. She wouldn't listened, yelled at me that she didn't have time to argue, finally said "ok, you're right, what do you want to do now" I said, continue paying my Medicare, and the rest to the $2000.00 debt...I left, thinking it was resolved. Five days later I got a bill from Medicare for $3000.00 and a threat to stop my coverage.I started calling SS again...everyone I talked to was confused, said it didn't make sense, but no-one could help me. It took me 6 MONTHS to get resolution. I consulted a lawyer to go thru it with me cuz I thought I was missing something or losing my mind. He agreed my figures were right. I tried one last time to call the Napa office and DONNA (god bless her)! answered the phone. She was the original person to set up the payment system. SHE listened to me, thru my tears. She ran the numbers and said OMG, you are absolutely RIGHT! Finally!!! She couldn't (or wouldn't ) explain HOW this mess happened, some computer error or something vague, and she apologized for Ms. Wycoff's abhorrent and unprofessional behavior, and also said she was concerned because Ms. Wycoff was, "one of their BEST at figuring things out"...scary. She had to send it to another department, and Mr. Rice called a week later and said, somehow, they hadn't paid the Medicare, and I owed $2500 on that, but my overpayment debt was paid in full! WOW. What is so sad, is that people dealing with the SS department are usually under some kind of duress, stress, or grief, often elderly or injured. If I hadn't been a PITBULL on this, I'm not sure I would have ever gotten my money back. BE CAREFUL when dealing with retirement and SS!!!! I would've worked for another two years had I been advised I would lose my Widow's benefit. They should have a form people sign that says "I am aware I may lose, or have an adjustment to, my widow's benefit". SIMPLE SOLUTION. read more
